Running back Joey Iosefa has completed his three-game suspension and is eligible to play in Saturday’s road game against Colorado State.
Iosefa’s return is too late to save the Warriors from their fourth consecutive losing regular season. But Iosefa’ bullish running is entertaining. He also brings back the wildcat, which is entertaining.
In my 33 years with the daily morning newspaper, the best season to cover (1987-88) was one of UH basketball worst years. Players had departed. There were injuries and illnesses. There were players out of position. A volleyball player joined the team. A football player joined, threw down a thunderous dunk in a game, then quit a few games later. There was discipline (a player had to jog from the Blaisdell to UH as a punishment), characters (“Reggie-Reg,” Chris Roscoe, David Hallums), hard work, and a lot of fun.
For UH football, it’s time to have fun again. The Warriors have tried, with option passes by wideouts; with Ikaika Woolsey channeling Michael Carter on an option pitch to Diocemy Saint Juste; to multiple blitzes. More daring what-the-heck calls would be refreshing.
The Warriors can’t change what’s already happened this season. As the players say, “It is what it is.” But real life is hard. There are bills, medical issues, school expenses, and so forth. Football should be fun. As an old Pepsi commercial advised: “Be young, have fun …”

Huge decision for UH — do they doom the football program by giving us another year of Chow, or do they stop the bleeding and do what any rational person would do — fire Chow.
If Chow is not fired, 15k is going to be the new norm for attendance. I didn’t think UH would go below 20k but that’s what’s happened.
Been a UH fan all my life, but you can only do so much to support a program that seemingly doesn’t want to support itself.

The season is beginning to show more signs of breakdowns in discipline and morale– in the last two games, two coaches yelling at each other, players dissing the coaches turning their backs on them and walking away, and committing deliberate personal fouls even as the coaches yell at them for it. Players who were disciplined on defense are running to the ball and losing position or contain. This should be Chow’s best year. Next year will be a down year with loss of seniors and the need to break in new players. I think recruiting will be even worse than it was this year. No doubt we will lose some of our best players to transfers and key decommits as we have every year under Chow.
For the sake of the program and the players, we need to make a change in the head coach. Ben needs to begin talking and seeing who might be a good candidate to replace Norm.
Leonard Peters on Saturdays post game show said he didn’t play football for fun he played to win. It was fun to play but it was about winning.

it should be fun for the fans too but it is not; that is why there are so few fans at the game. and those there are frustrated that they are unable to win. it the players want to play for only themselves and not for the fans or to win, then it should be shut down and have only intramurals. why spend so much money just for the sake of the players to have fun? for them it should be a business, especially those who aspire to become professional athletes. while many don’t make it professionally, but those who play for the team should play to win and bring honor and respect to themselves, the school and the state they represent. winning makes it more fun than just horsing around.
Those that want Chow fired now should show a little patience. I think the best thing for the players and the program is to let the season play out. The players already have the emotional baggage that comes with a 2-7 record. Why subject them to more turmoil? Other than to appease fan anger what good would it do? To me the only good reason to fire him now if there’s a guarantee it would increase ticket sales for the final home game.
Surprised nobody mention Rod York’s comments on the BC Show this morning. He said MM is a local kid who want’s to stay home and play for Norm Chow.

ST It’s too late for me to be young and have fun but hows about be old and have fun because may as well with the time left. You young people enjoy your life and learn from each stumbling block, adversity because there are lessons to be learned. Never be bitter and have regrets and give of yourself willingly and freely and when you least expect it the good will come back. Make sure you don’t pat yourself on your back and proclaim how good you are because once you do that you back to square one.
Yes, having some fun with football would be good. It is easiest to do this when one is confident that those in charge are taking care of business and that our role is simpy to be supportive and enjoy the games. Then all of our pontificating about which plays should be run and what schemes we should use are just quaint and amusing ways that fans occupy themselves to stay engaged.
But when things are not going well and there is a deterioration in confidence that those at the helm know what they are doing it is harder. I think that is the situation with UH athletics at present. As I have watched what has happened to the men’s BB program I have begun to doubt that we have wise leadership. This assessment may prove to be wrong when more is known. If so, I am happy to admit that I am incorrect.
We now have a possible crisis building in the football program. The current coaching staff has been unable to produce results and they have had a sufficient amount to time to prove themselves. What has been demonstrated is that they cannot produce a winning program and the community is turning away from them. Wise leadership is now needed. I worry that we do not have wise leadership and that the inevitable changes will be accompanied by more chaos than is needed. Whether coach Chow is removed now or at the end of the season is a decision for those in charge. Either way it can be done intelligently and with a strategic focus on next and coming years or it can be done foolishly and cause damage. In my (prelimary and insufficiently informed) opinion what has happened to the BB program has caused damage that was avoidable (or at least could have been reduced). It leaves me with little confidence for the football program. But maybe I am wrong. I hope so.

If a change at the top of the football team is going to be made I do not know if I would want a return of Coach Jones. I’d be more in favor of giving Cal Lee his shot. He is someone who has deep Hawaii roots and has been on staff at UH and would have insight as to how he could manage at the top at that level.
I think he’d assemble quite an interesting staff.

The knock on Coach Lee prior to coming onboard with June Jones was that he had no college coaching experience when he was one of the leading candidates to become a head coach at UH. The position was filled with the hiring of June Jones. Coach Lee has the credentials now to be a viable candidate. The only thing would be his age and whether he is interested in putting his name in the hat.

I just saw a green, totally untested 4th string true freshmen QB just go 14 for 15 on us. Granted USU didn’t give him too many difficult throws, only 15 pass attempts and 186yds is proof of that, but he made every throw he was asked to make.
Week in and week out, UH doesn’t give out starter many difficult throws, as evidenced by the low yards per completion/attempt, but week in and week out, he struggles to make them.
I don’t care if Beau doesn’t know the full playbook… it’s not like they are confident enough in IW to run the full playbook anyway. An ancient proverb somewhere once said, “Let the kid play… and see what he’s made of.”
As for some of the talk/gossip about former bows coming back, the one guy I cannot see coming back is Dino Babers. Although he is a bit of a “rolling stone”, he has coached at no fewer than a dozen previous programs, and his base-plus incentive package is parallel to Chows (mid 500s), I canʻt see where he leaves a rather similar (some would say better) for ours, here in Hawaiʻi.
Bowling Green (he is not at Eastern Ill) is currently at 5-3, in the very respectable Mid-American conference. Further, they have a rather healthy football budget, about 17 million or so, and he can fly under both the radar and the acerbic press (e kala mai ST–not you!). I canʻt speak for him, but it seems he is posing himself for something in the Big 10, in the next 2-3 years.
#47 I think that folks would use that aspect (his age) to possibly take him out of contention. I don’t believe that age has anything to do with the ability to lead and manage. An active mind is what one wants and if displays that, I believe that the chronological age is not a factor.
I believe that the question would be, can he recruit from the continent? If his staff is unable to do that, then he may not be a good fit as I don’t believe we could manage only with Hawaii players as many of the top prospects go away. If they all stayed, it may be a different story.

it’s nearly impossible for UH to win even with the return of Joey – he can take only so much pounding that his body has not felt for over 8 weeks.

If now, we have more of a chance to recruit for next season. We have a lot of seniors starting this year and who knows will transfer out. If later, then the new coach will have a more difficult time than Coach Chow had in his 1st season here. At least he had Mac’s recruits that are playing or had played a lot, if not started. Chow did drive away some talent that are now doing good for some other schools. Just get it done already!

UH arrives on Thursday, must take a 1hr& 30minute bus ride to Colorado St on Friday which is over 6,000 feet above sea level, colder than Denver – forecast for Saturday should be colder with snow as a new cold front drops in from Canada
UH will get blown out and the 21 1/2 point spread will be much too low
why? simple – review the first 9 games and see how effective the offense has been and the defense is starting to crack

I don’t see that there’s much to be gained by firing chow right now. End of the season, yes. Although I wouldn’t be sad if chow got fired right now. The team is a train wreck. A slow moving and boring train wreck.
the issue with the up and coming talented younger coaches is that if they end up turning the program around and having some success, they’ll most likely jump ship when they get an offer from the power 5 schools, whether that’s three years from now or 13. And that’s fine, because that’s the nature of being a small time/mid-major school in a small market. But then we’ll see the whole process start all over again.

McKenzie Milton is a junior this year. Most schools will wait to see the results of their 2015 recruiting before putting out offers for a 2016 quarterback recruit.
After coach McMackin’s firing, I remember UH was late to the table in hiring a new coach. A lot of the available coaches were already hired, and the search seemed pretty rushed. A respectful and early approach by UH, versus what was done to coach Arnold, might go a long way towards an orderly and positive coaching transition. As with the McMackin transition, the assistant coaches would likely want to be considered by a new head coach for retention. Recruiting for special teams and defense staffs wouldn’t have to be impacted.

that’s not being nice to Beau, the playbook is only 1 page front and back at most right? it seems like week after week UH runs thorough their scripted 12 or so plays, often with much success, then for some odd reason wynn flips the page over and goes back to their same old plays, never to return to the new and often successful plays. I haven’t figured it out yet
For one, Mack should not have been fired for having a 6-7 injury plagued season…Two, the President of the UH should have followed the AD’s and selection committee’s first choice for UH Football coach, Koetter, not Chow…Lastly, where are those people who wanted Chow because he’s “local”??? I think we would be making the same bad choice by advocating Lee or Miano, neither of whom, I thought were good coaches at UH…If they were, Mack would still be HC…
It’s tough being a UH fan nowadays, after owning season tickets for over 34 years, it’s hard to see the team play like it has…The Warriors were simply “outplayed” and “out-coached”, by Utah State. That “sucker” play with the receiver in a bubble screen throwing to a wide-open receiver across the field was a “classic” and reminded me of the “hook & ladder” play which NE Louisiana used to beat the Von-Appen Warriors back when…
When I looked down our roll, there were only three couples that have been there for the years we’ve been…We all looked at each other wondering if this may be the last…Sad!
Oh yeah…Save us alot of grief and improve the program…Fire Ben Jay…This is a ridiculous set of circumstances under “his watch” and I have “no confidence” in his leadership.
Players mouthing off to coaches? That’s a quick way to go from the starting rotation to the scout team, and have your place taken by another player on the travel roster. But, that’s just me.
Winning makes the game a lot more fun.
If a coaching chance occurs, I’d still like UH to offer the job to a guy who has successful head coaching experience, like Beau Baldwin from EWU. Jim Tressel successfully made the transition from Youngstown St (I-AA) to OSU.

Milton is considered small by D1 standards and is on some watch lists but not as many as his teammate Vavae Malipeai(JR). York said he has offers form UDub , Cal and UH among others.
#97. I share your pain. Been there from the beginning also. The Chow Era has been the 3 most disappointing seasons I can remember. Stubbornness and inflexibility are two traits a good head coach should not have while Chow has both in bunches.

Let’s not push n go backwards for JJ again. If u really watch college football, u would know the run n shoot has evolved. JJ offense out dated too. SMU record speaks for itself. Has gone down year after year. N if JJ is so good, why couldn’t he recruit there? I mean Texas is loaded with talent. He quit on his players after losing 3 GMs n saw no way of improving. Y would we want that? That’s like the captain of the Korean boat that sank. He bailed n left all those kid. Let’s think n push for bigger out of the box hirings. Like a TCU off coordinator. That off is awesome n has so much formations. Le s go big! Instead of who would. Rolo to young n that off is not that great. They lucky they have fajardo. Like how we got lucky wit colt.
i’m gonna go out on a limb here and say that at this point, mckenzie milton isn’t regarded as a big time, 4 star can’t miss division I recruit. he may eventually be very successful in college, or he may end up buried in the depth chart at a smaller FCS or division II school, but finish college and move on with his life (and that’s a good thing!), but I wouldn’t really get too much on UH for not actively recruiting him. Maybe he doesn’t have the skillset or talent that UH is looking for right now.
If norm wasn’t so prideful n stubborn, he could of made things happen. The best coaching happens when u adapt, take input, and drop ur pride. Too bad he doesn’t get it. Would of been awesome to see st juste, ewalinko, pedroza, n harding in a diamond formation n going for it. Put them all on the field at the same time n just let them buckaloose! But chow rather force feed his vision n play of not to lose. His goal of a TD a qtr is wrong. In college football u gotta aim to score 30+ to win consistently. But pride surely blocks his vision.

Dr. Chow says he will not quit. If he has any Aloha for Hawai’i and the team, he should resign. His wife needs him. Go home and take care of her. Put out an ad for a new coach at $200K and see who applies. We might find a lucky pearl. No more selection committees. Ben Jay interviews and chooses. He is paid the big bucks. He should earn it. It’s time for everyone to man/woman up.

I believe Chow was hired in mid-December around two to three weeks after Mack was fired. It was Chow’s choice not to put a staff together to begin the recruiting process until January so he could stay with Utah for the bowl game.

For this game, UH was around 50% completion rate passing (that’s not good), 3.2 yards per rush (not great either). based just on execution alone, still got to go with the run in this situation. 3rd and 1, based on yards per carry got to go with the run. based on statistical logic, got to go with the run in this situation. Would they have been stopped, probably (or we would’ve been called for false start or some stupid penalty)…but at least you would’ve gave yourself a shot. Having this QB throw to these receiver corps….that’s why you’re at 50% rating every game or just about (aside from Wyoming game). It’s always about execution. Our gimic plays don’t work, other teams can do it, but we suck at it and we definitely can’t defend it-even when it’s the same play we do….go figure. Not trying to argue with you, just pissed off like the rest of us.

It’s possible. There are easily 100,000 UH fans. As far as support, not every one of those people has to donate $10. $1 million is just broken down in small numbers to make the ultimate goal seem possible. It’s like those commercials on tv where for just a $1 a month/week/day could feed hungry children in Africa.
Relieve Chow now, put Daronte as interim and see what he can do for the remaining season. In the meantime, put a “trustworthy” committee together built up of 5 people, Dave, Stephen, President of UH, 1 public and 1 Tsaiko to find new Head Coach. If Daronte does good (wins 2 or 3 of next games), he gets the job, if not we have a coach waiting to step in as soon as season ends and they can hit the ground recruiting.
If we wait til the end of season the upper campus will get a hold of the situation, involve the regents, and whole hell will break loose…and we’ll be past February Jeezy will be pissed because we got crap recruits and we’ll be where we left off the last three years….losing
Why waste another year with Chow? We know that this year should have been his best year, but next year we lose seniors on offense and defense at almost every key position. We have to break in a new quarterback and new starters on offense. We lose guys like Yap on defense. Right now we see morale and discipline starting to crack– besides players dissing the coaches, we saw Chow having it out with one of his assistants.

Even when hired, Norm Chow couldn’t affect recruiting during that time. It is a recruiting dead period from mid-December until mid-January. Mack was hired a couple days after the dead period his first year, and had to scramble to get assistants while also trying to build a recruiting class from scratch as most of the offensive recruits chose elsewhere. Chow had roughly a month to complete his staff before UH could contact recruits.
If we are to let go of Chow do it sooner rather than later. The reason being is the job posting that has to be advertised it would be better to get it out of the way and have a pool of candidates to choose from, also recruiting wise other schools wouldn’t be able to use the unstable coaching staff as recruiting tool we already saw what happens when other schools get wind of possible changes so late into the recruiting period

If you’ve watched Milton play you know he brings allot of things to the table that I’ve yet to see from our starting qb. Sure it is against highschool teams but the point is he does what he does and does it consistently Milton is the kind of qb Nevada will offer and it will haunt us Nevada’s starting qb could’ve very well ended up as a warrior as he was under recruited while playing in a pretty tough Cal League…
I remember when UH went after Ewaliko a lot of people were saying why we were going after him? I said back then as I will now you recruit the athlete and find a position for him on the team. A lot of quarterbacks have gone thru our program and ended up in other positions but really think that MM is special. I have seen some pretty good quarterbacks this season who I think will play at the college level. I am also happy seeing the success some former UH players are having as coaches at the highschool level. The quality of the game has gotten so much better.
With Iosefa back you know we could play any of our quarterbacks. All they will be doing most of the time is handing off the ball. Joey will be asking for the ball but I think coach should go with Lakalaka and save Joey for those short explosive yardage we will be needing on 3rd and short.

Milton runs a 4.5 and throws with more accuracy than any QB UH has. That 4.5 speed and throwing arm will only improve as he gets older. The best thing about Milton is he’s a winner. Just goes to show how incompetent Chow is if he is not actively recruiting him.
Re:139 thats exactly my point so say Milton doesn’t end up as a qb he runs a 4.5 forty for goodness sake put him on the field as a slot back I couldn’t imagine to many linebackers would be able to keep up in coverage I mean Ryan Grice-Mullin was a qb his senior year of high school on a team that didn’t win any games he came to Hawaii and helped us to the sugar bowl

Bring in a coaching regime with all coaches either being from the UH, the HI state, or Hawaii ties…that have either NFL experience or coaching experience. I’m sure they would consider, they wouldn’t really mind the finance portion being ex-nfler’s and would welcome the challenge of turning their team around. And they would have yank in recruiting and elsewhere….

If they really want to coach for UH, say take three years or leave it, then move on……. Unless it is Urban Meyer, Nick Saban, Steve Spurrier, Jim Tressel, Tony Dungee, Mike Shanahan, or the likes…..
Hi Cocobean, yes I agree with you. Milton is considered undersized and schools are just keeping an eye on him. Mililani coach Rod York did say in his radio interview on 1420 radio with Bobby Curran that Hawaii was showing a lot on interest in Milton and was working with “his” coaching staff. I didn’t quite understand the last comment, but it was clear that Hawaii is showing interest and keeping an open communication with the Mililani coach. And of course there’s the two other Mililani players, Malepeai and Rex Manu, both of whom I’m sure Hawaii would love to get.

Contractually, he couldn’t put his staff together. Also, not much is going to get done during Christmas-New Years week in the way of approving the hiring of new assistant coaches. I’m sure Chow was on the phone with people, but he couldn’t officially do anything until he actually had a contract.
We’re playing probably the best team in the MWC this week at their house. It’s gonna get real ugly real fast. It’ll be over by half time.

Milton is the type of kid that might do well at Nevada, Fresno, or Utah State in the MWC, or a team like Rice. He would be a great candidate for Navy. He is also like Graunke, Graves, Satcher, and Funaki who were running QB’s recruited by June and played for him and for Mack. He could play for us, but he would not be the normal Chow recruit.
I use to believe Chow would turn this team around in year 3. But, he’s not getting it done.
If he is still here by year 5, watch home attendance drop to high school like attendance #.

Cal & Ron bring one hell of a lot to the table but Norm insists on hiring “yes men” like Jordan Wynn & Luke Matthews (just my opinion). Today I sent an email to both the “interim” Chancellor and our “esteemed” Athletic Director asking them when the “heck” are they going to fire Norm ??? Same short/curt “excuses”…sad thing is our players deserve a heck of a lot better leadership & coaching. Good example is we have Chris Naeole as our OL coach. We all know his background…All State @ Kahuku, All American @ Colorado, and a very successful NFL career…one of our best OL coaches was Mike Cavanaugh. I’m not sure of his H.S. background but he wasn’t an All American and he didn’t play in the NFL …BUT… THAT GUY CAN SURE COACH O-LINEMEN. That’s what we lack, coaches who can TEACH…not just scream and threaten…
You want to watch a coach who can teach and bring out the best in her players. Go watch coach Laura Beeman.
#145 … “Down with” … good ideas/selections but I have to disagree w/ Daronte as the DB coach. Ne’Quan Phillips was my Utah State player of the game as he helped with 3 USU TDs…if Ne’Quan is the best we have, and he’s only a Jr., we have some serious issues in the defensive backfield. Also no to Clune as DC; he was with USU for 4 yrs and should have known their offensive plays. The defense got torn apart with the run.
BTW…I’ll be in the Bay Area on the 15th; the plan WAS to attend the UH game but I’m too embarrassed to wear my Green & White @ Spartan Stadium. I’m going to the City College of SF vs College of San Mateo JC game instead. If I can find cheap seats online I might go to the Stanford / Utah game if it’s at night…

Of course Chow does not make excuses. On Inside Access, he talked about the great foundation at USU. And then pointed to their facilities. Yup, that is why they embarrassed us at home this weekend. Not the coaching, not the preparation, not the recruiting. The facilities. But no excuses for driving our program into the ground.

Chow could have started as soon as his hire was announced. It took him at least a couple weeks to put his staff together after he arrived in January. This delayed the planning and recruiting strategy several weeks. Remember Chow needed to first interview each player and access needs. This should have taken place in December not mid January. Just setting the record straight.

When Willis Wilson tragically drowned, I emailed the “esteemed” AD if any kind of fund could be established for donations to help defray the Wilson family’s expenses. I don’t know if NCAA rules prohibit such an action but I didn’t receive the courtesy of any reply which I thought was very inconsiderate. Silence seems to be the modus operandi of those occupying the UH ivory tower perches.
to the ADs credit, he’s probably a very busy man who gets blasted with a lot of emails every single day which are much higher priority than one from a disgruntled fan talking about how terrible norm chow is or expressing condolences to an athlete. So i woudln’t give him too much of a hard time for not responding to every email.

#180 st. anthony trojan – Given the UH athletics program’s dependency on public support/attendance for much of their budget, it would seem to be a no-brainer to make it a priority to respond to emails from the public. But as recently evidenced with the debacle regarding the men’s BB program, brain power is perhaps not in abundance at Manoa. I realize that not all emails can be responded to but mine was sent last December after Willis died. I doubt it if UH was being bombarded w/emails back then. As you point out, I think the personal nature of the circumstances should have at least warranted the courtesy of a reply. I was hoping that a donation fund could provide Warrior fans with the opportunity to demonstrate our aloha for the Willis family. But alas, such was not to be -the silence is deafening.

Like Reardon suggested, we need a change NOW. We are now a bottom 10 team; and sinking fast. Chow’s 6-27 record is only surpassed by the Idaho coach–we are NOW compared to the Idaho football program. The players seemed to have given up; less than 20,000 fans show up; RECRUITING WILL BE AFFECTED if we don’t do something now, and we are losing thousands of dollars each week.
If 37,500 fans donate $20 each; we would easily have the $750,000 to buyout Chow’s contract. Let’s do another crowd-sourcing venture to save our once proud Hawaii football program!

192-Agree with the thought, but hard to donate money that will go into Chow’s pocket. He has made $1.5 million or so the past three years. That is a little more than most of us make in [fill in the blank] years. Maybe Chow needs to make the first donation to help salvage the program.

Will be in Fort Collins on Sat proudly wearing my Warrior gear!!! Forecast is about 60 and sunny at sunset…..no colder that about 40 at the end of the game. When it is in the 60’s in that area you are actually very warm. As far as the game goes provided we come to play I do no think it will be a blow out contrary to what some may think. SJS racked up plenty of yards….not to say we will but CSU being 8-1 is not in the top 25 for a reason. Hoping its competitive and who knows. I am forever optimistic…Go Warriors!!!!

you would think that UHAD would have enough smarts, hey, am I giving UH extra credit where none deserved?, to offer a 5 year contract with the 1st 3 nearly guaranteed and UH option on the last 2 – also, consider a “with or without cause” clause
this way, there is an out without a buy out clause
apply coach would baulk? maybe, but if he is worth his mettle, UHAD would extend the last 2 years between #2 and #3 thus giving coach much needed boost and recruits know coach will be around for another 3 years.
much is being said about large $$$ contract, but most fail to recognize that team/school can terminate contract at any time.
