Tablets could ease UH’s aches
If an ill-gotten iPad is at the heart — or, at least, an artery — of the basketball investigation, there could have been one solution: Get everybody one.
UH is becoming less reliant on paper. For instance, media guides and weekly news releases are sent out as pdf attachments on e-mails. In sports, an increasingly number of schools rely on visual teachings as supplements to play books.
What UH should do is buy iPads for every team. The playbook, cut-up videos, and so forth could be loaded into the iPads each week. Student-athletes could sign out for the iPads. They could add music, videos or Candy Crush as long as they pay for it. At the end of the season or career, they could return the iPad or buy it at the depreciated value.
Sure, it would be pricey. But there would be a savings on paper. And it should be considered as an investment as a teaching and strategic tool.
A UH team actually was negotiating to buy iPads in bulk. Unfortunately, that deal fell apart.

From the press clippings so far, this whole Gib Arnold situation appears to be pushed by Chancellor Bley-Vroman and/or AD Ben Jay.
I find it unusual that the Chancellor came out gave a quote about touting about how things are going to be all smiley faces going forward on the first article breaking the news of Arnold’s firing. Not sure how much of this is Ben Jay’s idea but since he’s fairly new around UH and Gib wasn’t his hire, he’s playing good little soldier to his bosses instead of trying to supporting the coach who’s brought back UH BB.
IMO, I don’t think President Lassner and the BOR are leading the charge (at least in public) because they have only produced a generic statement that essentially said, ‘don’t talk to us, you should talk to the Chancellor and AD about this.’ There was one Regent that was interviewed and he claimed that the Board was essentially waiting out the process and letting the Chancellor and AD handle it. Don’t quote me on this since I don’t remember exactly what he said but the Regent said something to the lines that the Board was surprised of the situation when firing Arnold topic was brought up.
Maybe ST can correct my memory of what the Regent was saying. KFVE Sports is the team that televised this short interview.
The article on Guzman reminds there are many players who don’t get to play much in their careers at UH. But he voices a good attitude and glad he is on scholarship. Always ready on the sidelines, even though he may never get in. At least he got to punt last year some.

Is it me or is UH pretty comical? It seems we are paying leadership salaries to people without leadership skills. In sports, you play the game with the team you have and either win or lose. UH seems to feel that we don’t have the right personnel and will constantly hire and fire and use the excuse we don’t have the right personnel rather than develop a team and play the game. Too much time is wasted evaluating personnel rather than playing the game and improving the team…and I’m not talking about the sports teams. Is it any wonder why I send my child to the mainland for college? UH is a sad joke. After all this mess and wasted money, we still have no clear direction or leadership. Sounds like we need to do more firing and paying off.

Hmmn, I have tried to remain calm about the actions of senior UH administrators, both upper and lower campus, as well as the BOR. However, at this juncture, they are quickly approaching status that would legitimately allow them E.K. Fernandez signage.

and yes, why can’t UHAD purchase, by bulk, Ipads for all student athletes – scholarship or walk-ons like ST mentions in his intro in todays post? each student is assigned an Ipad and it would be the athlete’s responsibility to secure it and turn it in when he/she leaves – part of the “exit” procedure such as cleaning out your locker – military has an exit check list that must be initialed by an NCO before the individual is allowed to leave – if the student damages or loses the Ipad, he/she must reimburse UHAD for its value.
it may be expensive, but more cost effective to someone filing a civil action against UH for whatever and having to pay the judgment

The idea behind the big time law firm advising us is to advise us on what we should do before the NCAA issues a notice of violations and sanctions and thereby preempt stiffer penalties with our own findings and self-imposed sanctions. Where the UHADEPT was slow was not retaining the law firm ASAP so it could do their own investigation before the NCAA did– the NCAA investigation just uncovers more. The law firms deal with the MCAA and the NCAA trusts thse firms which represent big time programs. Based on what the law firm finds they can spell out the sanctions to be expected and the sanctions we should self impose to preempt harsher NCAA sanctions.

Tough year for UH athletics and for those of us who care about it. With all the complexity and head shaking befuddlement sometimes it becomes simple. There is a football game on Saturday. There are a group of young men who have worked very hard and have not been rewarded much for their efforts. There is a coaching staff (love them or hate them) who have worked very hard in insane asylum masquerading as an institute of higher education. I will be there on Saturday night to support the team. There is not much else I can do.
Get rid of the Board of Rodents! Chop the head of the snake off, then no more damage. Let their attorney, the new guy, ax em. Or send all the alumni, i’m included, ballots to approve the dismemberment of the Rodents. Very simple. Yes or No to their existence because to me they dont know jacks_ _ _ _!! Tired already!! Can someone enlighten me about the role of the Board of Regents (BOR)? Right now, I don’t think the BOR’s role includes involvement in the decisions regarding athletics at the University of Hawaii. Isn’t the BOR, like other corporate boards, to establish direction for the university (company/corporation) and guidelines within which UH administrators (corporate presidents) are to operate?
nope, Arnold was a rogue coach, trying to win at all cost. believing that since uh is so far away, he could “stretch” the rules and will not be caught. the reason he got fired was that he lied when asked about certain things.

There’s a movie called “Robot and Frank”, which is about an old man who is given a service robot to help him in his golden years. The public library is a reoccuring setting, the place where you’re supposed to read books, but in the near-future, the library is a building without any books; they’re being scanned and archived. The “new” library is a place where people simply gather. It’s a nice bit of extrapolation, because if you step into one of our public libraries, most people are on the Internet, or at tables and carrels with their iPads and laptops. I don’t begrudge people who use technology, but for me, all I want out of an iPad or iPhone are scores. Is it still an NCAA violation if Brendyn Akana gave Issac Fotu a copy of John Feinstein’s “The Last of the Amateurs”? Maybe Keith Shamberger got jealous and blew the whistle on the ill-fated iPad. I am sad. The idea of players defecting from the team is in the back of my mind the whole day.
Call it what you want – Fotugate, Gibgate, Ipadgate. It appears from what’s behind the firing without cause is some sort of coverup. The call to can Gib was above Jay’s pay grade seems it was the interim Chancellor who made it.
If that was the case the decision was ill timed and made with blinders on. I don’t think too much thought was given to the ramifications the timing of the firing would have. The decision blindsided too many people – coaches, players, bb fans and supporters of the UHAD in general. The interim Chancellor should have realized removing the head coach of a major sport will have more far reaching effects than removing the head of another program under his jurisdiction. People are plain angry.
You can’t just buy iPads for the teams. You’d have to buy for every student on campus or else it’s another NCAA violation. Right? Student athletes aren’t supposed to get anything above the regular students.
Now this is generally speaking, as specific statues and bylaws may also be instructive of their specific responsibilities, but, by and large for a large public university, they would have the following duties:
Creating strategic plans for the Board and approving mission statements and strategic plans for the institutions, as well as monitoring progress toward strategic goals.
Creating and monitoring implementation of broad policies.
Reviewing and approving academic programs.
Approving budgets, tuition and fees, bonding, investment policies, and other business and finance matters.
Manage and control property and capital improvement projects.
Hiring and evaluating performance of the university presidents and possibly chancellors, and sometimes coaches…
Have oversight on matters related to personnel and employment relations, including some items related collective bargaining activities.
Monitor/coordinate legislative/congressional matters and interactions with other appropriate agencies.
Conducting studies and investigations, independently or in association with the institutions , and reporting findings and instruction.
Buying iPads or note pads for anyone means money will have to be stolen form another pressing need in the athletic department. The pressing need right now is for the football team to generate the same revenue from three years ago.

How about some FACTS to support your comments?
The timing was terrible, but the UH was trying to beat the NCAA to the punch with self-imposed sanctions– getting rid of the head coach who under NCAA rules is the responsible party for the violations, as well as a coach directly responsible for at least one infraction. If they beat the NCAA, then they have good chance to avoid bigger sanctions from the NCAA (this the way the “game” is played and why we hired the attorney who represents the big time programs in these matters). One story is that the special attorney (who has frequent contact with the NCAA), counsel that the penalties would be harsh, including loss of scholarships (I don’t know if the attorney recommended letting Gib go). The other reason for the timing is that the idea was to allow Gib’s contract and Akana’s contract to end and not to fire Gib for cause in order to eliminate the issue of proving cause or wrong doing by Gib (this one may not work and Gib may come back and ding us good).
By not firing Gib, it let the contract end without the need for a buyout to for a severance package. By not signing the contract, UH kept the alternative of just letting the contract end.
what upper campus needs is a couple cracks and a swift kick in the ass out the door.

Re-I read how some are licking their chops because UH’s opponent this Saturday,Utah State, is down to their 4th string QB (Kent Myers) and this may give UH an edge–don’t be fooled.
After looking at Kent Myers junior year (HS) football highlights this is a very good QB.
Look and the tape for yourselves and you can see another Kaepernick in the making. I promise. Dual threat. Quick release. Good footwork. Speedy. Shifty.
A quick research-#2, 6-0 / 185, true freshmen, Scouts 3 Star, named MVP of his league. No other offers other than Utah State (this is hard to believe).
UH’s defense has a big challenge ahead, and should dismiss the hype that USU is “down” to their true freshmen 4th string QB, because imo this player has just as much of a “it factor” as the Nevada QB.
In brief action in last weeks game against UNLV, Myers was 3-5 passing for 45 yards and had 3 rushing attempts for 28 yards. In that game Myers got his baptism, feet wet and has drawn blood…and by all apparent signs is exceeding expectations. And to counter-UH’s defense needs to bring their “A” game. For this is no ordinary “4th string QB.”
People, UH fans, bettors, and especially those at Scouts (the ones I’ve read), that are licking their chops because USU is “down” to their 4th string QB are mistaken. Don’t be. If anything rest your hopes that Vigil, USU’s star two way player at LB/RB, can’t play Saturday (word has it that he injured a hamstring in last weeks game with UNLV and is iffy). If Vigil is out is that’s the biggest loss not the 4th string QB starting against UH. And yo… you at Scouts for your information a optimal “lick your chops time” is when UH schedules Weber.
In the future all ncaa games will be played on Sony Playstations.

#15: Actually, you CAN blame chow for the failures of UH football. He’s the one coaching, after all. You don’t fire the manager because he made a bad hire. sometimes the hires don’t pan out.
As far as all the other stuff happening with gib arnold and what not, that’s a different situation.
Looking forward, what coach would want to coach at UH now? UH leadership has a growing track record of poor fiscal management, political backstabbing, and clearly has the mindset that athletics is more of a fun hobby, rather than a serious revenue generator and a vehicle to advertise and gain recognition around the country.
If I were an agent, I would advise my coaching clients to avoid UH coaching offers unless it is the absolute last option. I’m pretty certain UH has scared off all promising up-and-coming coached by now in FB and BB. I would think even Rolo would have to stop and think about coming back if offered the eventual FB job opening. The reason why I say that is because Rolo has to know he’s going to have a substandard salary for the foreseeable future, and with the way UH leadership has been handling coaching changes in the past decade, his head coaching career is likely over. For Rolo’s sake, I hope he gets a HC job somewhere else because if fails over there, that school isn’t likely to ruin his future and being on the mainland, fining another good coaching opportunity is pretty likely.
Because Hawaii is so isolated, fired coaches rarely get a second chance. Mac, Nash, Takahara-Dias, Bolla, and Von Appen all did not receive any coaching offers after being let go by UH. Obviously Bolla left under serious issues, but the college coaching careers were essentially over after UH. Von Appen bounced around as an assistant for a while but retired a while back. You can probably add Chow to this list in the future. Gib Arnold likely won’t get another HC job because he now has serious baggage on him. Gib’s best chance to prolong his coaching career might be to get a NBA job as a scout or maybe he can get an assistant job. Kind of like Kelvin Sampson has done. Gib is going to have challenges getting hired by a college program because he is now a part of 2 NCAA investigations (1st was at USC as an assistant).
Gib does have a great eye for talent and in the pros, he no longer has to worry about tedious NCAA rules. He could be a valuable asset for an NBA team.
wish someone would take the time to sue the NCAA for discrimination on how it decides to or not to investigate and what penalties to dole out – I like “discrimination” law suits because it falls under Federal rules.guidelines and opens the defendant to not only the specific allegation(s), but investigators can dig into anything they want

continue to be upset how the NCAA treated UH men’s volleyball national championship – 2 or 3 months after the game, they created a new rule, made it retroactive 4 1/2 to 5 years, and then told UH “you should have known” that student athletes cannot compete on pro teams nor accept gratuities such as pay or gifts when UH was recruiting Costas T – Costas did not receive any pay and refused to accept any gifts showered his way.

As it stands right now if you don’t do it for all student then it is a ncaa violation, it is considered a benefit not allowed to the student athlete alone.
The only recourse the mid-level and small schools have is to withdraw from the ncaa and form their own association. I think that would be a very good idea!!

#43: regarding withdrawal from NCAA. That would probably be a terrible idea. The power five schools can do it because they command massive fan bases, tv contracts, and revenue streams. They have the political clout as well as the ability to maintain massive contracts and money and fan interest and could probably survive without the NCAA. The smaller schools, like UH, tulsa, boise state, or whoever, would not be able to.
regardless of enforcement issues, member schools of the NCAA receive A LOT of money from the organization in the form of direct funding, programs, and services. Unless you’re prepared for those small schools/mid majors who choose to withdraw to completely fall off the map and basically play glorified high school varsity sports (which honestly, may not necessarily be a bad thing, especially when you consider that the mission of a university is education, not to support a multimillion dollar football business and a cartel that oversees the entire enterprise), then withdrawing from the NCAA to create a bush league would be a terrible idea.
This can’t be the whole story because if it is its pathetic. A coach gets fired for iPad Gate?! A well organized admin would have all been on the same page and swept this under the rug. Get off the high horse and get into reality. You talk of being a big boy school then start acting like one

It is almost noon, about 2 days after Gib’s firing was announced…
–Still no released of investigation report findings by the NCAA.
–Still no word from NCAA on allegations or potential punishments.
–Still no details given regarding Fotu’s suspension. I haven’t seen who actually ruled him ineligible… NCAA or UH? I’ve only seen that its because of the investigation but no mention of who ruled Fotu out. Can someone clarify?
Ben Jay is conveniently on medical leave, the BOR is trying their best to stay out of the spotlight, and no word from the Chancellor since he chimed in on the press release. Again, just more evidence that UH has extremely weak leadership.
To my understanding, after the NCAA releases their report, the school should have the right to have meetings with the NCAA to have the report and any allegations explained to them. There should be a Q and A session and probably at some point go over punishment scenarios.
One of the foreseeable penalties is waiving the D-1 transfer rule of sitting out a year. I think UH can survive scholarship reductions and post season bans without too much issue, but if the NCAA imposes the transfer waiver, UHMBB will be decimated for many years.
By firing Gib prematurely, UH has already blown their biggest bargaining chip. If UH was in fact the party that ruled Fotu out, then UH has blown their 2nd largest bargaining chip. Firing Akana blew out their 3rd bargaining chip…
Had UH waited until meeting with the NCAA before taking these drastic actions, UH could have offered to sacrifice Gib & Akana first. Then if the NCAA says that’s not enough, then UH could offer to suspend and players involved for X number of games to stave off the transfer rule waiver.
When the time comes for UH to meet with the NCAA… UH is essentially going to enter negotiations with zero leverage to remove/reduce penalties. They have to HOPE (let me repeat… HOPE!!!) the NCAA views the self-discipline as sufficient to reduce penalties. By not having any leverage, UH is in an unlikely position to say which penalties they want to have imposed.
What UH is failing to consider is that the NCAA has a history of slamming non-premiere sports programs even if there has already been self-discipline already imposed.
The transfer rule waiver is the #1 thing UH needs to try and avoid at all costs, but UH has no more bullets to defend themselves. They essentially are now HOPING for the best… That’s not good.

I haven’t followed UH basketball since the Joey Galloway, Mike Robinson days. I have watched games last year the most since then but they didn’t seem to dominate most of the So Cal Big West teams. It seems under Gib there has been a ton of transfer outs, maybe they do need a change.

Having a lot of transfers is not exclusive to UH. Most schools have the same issue. It’s just a trend now with college athletes especially in bball.

#63 islandman after listening to Portnoy and Wheeler last night it sounds like Fotu was immediately declared ineligible by the NCAA after it was determined he accepted illegal benefits such as the previously mentioned laptop. Now the school answers back with a request for reinstatement based on the value amount he is being accused of accepting. Larger the amount, longer the penalty. Many are expecting a handful of games before a return to the court this year.
The University of Hawaii is a dysfunctional entity that needs an organizational overhaul. While the direction is uncertain, one constant still remains, the toxicity in the upper administrative/management levels are at an all time high.

Louisville v. Florida St. 1st half: Louisville 21, Florida St 7. Jameis Winston pitches 2 interceptions. Louisville offensive play-calling and execution really good. Maybe Hawaii coaching staff can do same for game against Utah St.
Florida State is riding a 23 game win streak, ranked#2 in the country and can’t move the ball against Louisville. Some odds maker that I read said Louisville is finally healthy on offense and has one of best defenses in the country–his pick definitely take Louisville(+3.5) . As it stands right now with FSU down 24-7 early in the 3rd quarter his prediction might be right. The last time these two teams met, back in 2002, Louisville beat the then 4 ranked FSU team 26-20. I smell another upset. Oh, oh FSU just scored. This game is all of sudden interesting.

FSU plays 8 in the box, sometime even having 6 down linemen, and what does Louisville do? Run the ball right into the teeth of the defense. Makes no sense. The Louisville team comes out like racehorses and sees a 21 point lead evaporate into 42-31 loss. Good. Serves them right to lose, 0-9 on third downs, and questionable play calling will spell doom to any team. Louisville and fans must feel sick after this game…all the rah, rah…I smell an upset for nothing.
A thorough house cleaning is in order at UH. After listening to coach Arnold’s remarks this evening he stated that the university is great a finding problems but sucks at finding solutions. He also stated that people who aren’t leaders are put in leadership positions which is a big part of the problem. Is Ben Jay part of the problem? I don’t know, but I know that he sucks at breaking up physical altercations.
Per Arnold, the players were told that it’s (Arnold’s firing) for their own good but they aren’t buying it. Time will tell. You don’t dismiss a coach without informing him first.
Too bad we don’t have a former UH athlete who’s making it big in the NFL and can donate ipads to the entire football team. ie. Nebraska

Gib Arnold’s interview on KHON was quite interesting. Said he does not know what the NCAA has found or why he was let go. His comment that the NCAA is doing the right thing by investigating is a bold one.
I find Coach Arnold’s view a sharp contrast to Robert Kekaula’s statement he made yesterday. Kekaula’s said that when the NCAA report comes out it is going to get really ugly! How he got to this conclusion with the absence of a formal NCAA report is beyond me. He either knows something or just being a journalist trying to speculate.
Anyway, in a few weeks when the report comes out we should know which of these two individuals was trying to be truthful.
I never thought this would ever happen again since the NCAA sanctions imposed on the UH Rainbows’ 1976-77 basketball team. Shame on UH Athletics administration for allowing this to happen again…..and for apparent violations by the basketball program. Maybe UH needs to drop men’s basketball. They just can’t seem to manage to run a ‘clean’ program. Say what you will about former Rainbow men’s head basketball coach Riley Wallace, he might have thrown a few jackets, but he ran a clean, winning program for 20 years.

David Lassner isn’t some random professor whose only leadership experience was department head. He’s held a lot of leadership positions from within the university to outside organizations and private companies and consortiums.

#90. There is more “in play” here than meets the eye.
Have any of you looked at the NCAA DIV I regs in infractions and the process yet? I have, and am now re-reading them.
No doubt in my mind that Arnold is being “played” by UH Admin to its advantage as a sacrificial lamb in hopes they can appease the NCAA. They are not looking out for their coaches, only how they can use it to save themselves. There are likely infractions, but we don’t know what they are or how severe because of the “sounds of silence” that the NCAA “legislates.” So, if true, then where are the leaks coming from? No one is supposed to know ANY details.
The press has their freedom of speech shield that they will wield. Regent Portnoy will love that. But they are not supposed to know ANYTHING. Neither should any of the fans.
Regardless, UH has pulled a fast one. Relieved without cause, so Arnold has no recourse against the UH. This was done under the pre-text that UH needs to self-impose sanctions to stave off even stronger sanctions if the NCAA is not satisfied. But, with Arnold gone, the NCAA can sanction the UH, but gee, they did not impose any sanction on Arnold. So guess what. Does he have any right of an appeal? What can he appeal? UH is the body that acted against him — without cause. Net loophole and strategy. My hat’s off the the Alabama counsel.
But you know this is a charade created by the NCAA’s regs. And, they love it because they don’t need to prove anything.

UH can hire high school coaches to handle their collegiate sports — if they can find any takers. I wouldn’t.
No common decency when they do let a coach go. And know that if anything is out of line, they will throw you under the bus. It is a one-way street.

I think if UH had the funds Chow would be gone. However, UH has never had the will to fire coaches mid-season. Although this regime seems to like to fire people right before the season starts (Aaron Price last year).

Chancellor Bley-Vroman and AD Jay made no mention of any attorney recommendation in their statements regarding the decision to fire Arnold and Akana. When a client has legal representation, there’s usually some form of reference that their attorneys or counsel helped them form their actions/statements. Phrases like: “The recommended action…”, “It was advised…”, Etc.
BleyVroman and Ben Jay could have forgotten to mention their attorneys in their statements, but the way this is going, it doesn’t appear like a well thought out plan or it’s likely they are acting on their own agenda, which renders whatever money spend on attorneys worthless.
The only strategic action that UH has done that likely had help from the attorneys was the decision to fire Arnold “without cause” so they are not required to explain themselves and the remaining salary owed was low enough to absorb. That much makes sense…
However, dropping the hammer on yourself before you even know the severity of the infraction along with not knowing the sanction scenarios is something I have a hard time believing a high profile attorney that specializes with clashing with the NCAA would recommend.
Well, I had season tickets the year after Anthony Carter left. They went, I believe, 8-20 that year. I’m ready for anything. If you sit by supportive, but sarcastic fans, the games can be a lot of fun. What I remember most fondly was somebody referring to Mike Robinson as Dr. Robinson(because he was given a 6th year of eligibility). After listening to Artie Wilson on The Josh Pacheco Show today, it just occured to me that Wilson would probably make an excellent assistant coach.
In Chancellor Bley-Vroman’s first address after being hired he spoke of Stability and Rationality as goals. He stated 6 areas of responsibilities with Hawaiian Place of Learning being a part of all things. He spoke of Transparency. I think it was all talk. I trust actions. The administration’s actions speak for themselves. And in his “wide ranging talk” not once was athletics mentioned. Maybe, since athletics has to be self-sufficient, the Athletic Director should report directly to the President and not the Manoa Chancellor which holds itself as a research institution and not affiliated with athletics.
Man, the more I learn about the way Gib lost his job and the way UH has handled it, the less it sits well with me.
The happiest man on campus has got to be Norm Chow. He was probably wondering why the media hasn’t been at practice this week asking about his job security.
UH football does still have a game this week, right?
Then again, I don’t think Chow has been asked a difficult question by too many of the media members anyway.
Let’s just hope Ben Jay doesn’t get too close to any drunk fans when he attends the football game on Saturday. He might not like what they have to say or like what they throw at him.

Kind of upset why fire Gib Arnold without cause. sounds like he is innocent why so hush hush even about Isaac Fotu this is wrong taking action without reason or proof or a simple explanation would help ease our concerns and if your proof is rock solid. Then the process is wrong. We should all be innocent until proven guilty
Legally, the university is firing Gib “for cause” even though they are calling it “without cause”. They are depriving him of his reputation and hurting his career without due process (UH is a public university and must provide due process in firing for cause)– no right to a hearing or to see the evidence against him and to confront his “accusers”– Gib has cause to bring a wrongful termination suit against UH. They are throwing him under the bus to avoid sanctions by the NCAA. This happened because UH did not hire their NCAA specialist lawyer at the start of this. What they should have done is to have an NCAA experienced lawyer respected by the NCAA conduct an investigation, and only after that presented the findings and self reporting the fraudulent document and it would likely be done– maybe Akana gets canned. But UH as usual, bungled this– it “invited” the NCAA to come and investigate and created a fishing expedition for them that made this whole matter a lot worse than it could have been if it obtained and followed good legal advice.
Kind of interesting how so many people are saying UH screwed up because they dismissed Gib before UH knew what the NCAA will report. Yet those same people are saying UH screwed up when they don’t know what the NCAA will report either.
Do you REALLY believe GIB has no idea of what the allegations against him are? REALLY? New born babies aren’t that innocent.
Remember, this is the guy who said it was “absolutely nothing” when his assistant coach intentionally FALSIFIED a document. Without that falsification to the document, a certain recruit apparently would not have been eligible to transfer to UH. Falsifying a document to get an athlete you would not have otherwise gotten is absolutely SOMETHING in my view. Something serious.
And when someone is so willing to downplay a serious event in order to keep himself out of trouble, that person is suspect in my book. They have proven that their word cannot be trusted, that their judgment cannot be trusted.
So Gib saying he has absolutely no idea what’s gong on? Whatever. Don’t worry about it, Gib. Nothing’s going on. Absolutely nothing.
WarriorMojo, so you believe the UH fired Gib for cause? That is the unfair thing about what UH has done by trying to pretend this was not done for cause in a clumsy attempt to fire Gib without due process. If you were in Gib’s shoes, I think you would want to know why you are being fired and be able to tell your side of the story and defend yourself. Gib will not be shown or told any of this and will not have a chance to defend himself– he will not see the attorney’s report and he will not see the NCAA report except to the extent it is released to the public– after he has been terminated. The lawyer’s findings will never be publicly reported or provided to Gib.
Temp, not trying to be condescending, but I think you might be misunderstanding certain things. Also, I’m not an employment lawyer, but anyway: termination “for cause” occurs when an employee has committed an act of misconduct or violates the employer’s policies in some way. Termination “for cause” generally means the employer doesn’t have to fulfill its part of the contract, i.e. pay the employee, for whatever time remains on a fixed term employment contract.
IN this case UH isn’t firing Gib for cause, which just means that they are going to honor the time remaining on his contract. He’ll get paid every penny that is due him. Same with Akana. When the contract is up, UH won’t renew, as is their prerogative. Absolutely nothing illegal about that.
Also, generally speaking, there is no such thing as “due process” in an employment context. Open ended employment contracts are terminable “at will”, meaning the employee can be fired at any time and for any — legal — reason. Similarly, the employee can quit anytime for any reason.
Employment contracts with a fixed term are slightly different. Again, if Gib were being fired for cause, he might be entitled to an explanation of the reasons and might even be able to pursue a grievance. Again, all of that is in place to prevent an employer from breaking the employment contract. UH is honoring the full term of the contract and Gib has no beef, except if the union bargaining agreement, if there is one, specifies something different, which is possible.
So, again, I ask you, does Gib REALLY not know which rules he violated? Or does he just not know which rule violations the NCAA was able to identify? What’s the play here?
As I see it, this innocent act is all media manipulation. It’s a play for public sympathy and support. It’s also likely a revenge shot at Ben Jay and UH, although that part is not as clear. But the public sentiment/media manipulation part is obvious. And long time readers know that I’ll always call media manipulation (Hi, Manti, how’s Lenay these days?)
The UH is trying to disguise a firing for cause as a termination of the contract without cause. It is in fact and substance a firing for cause. The cause being Arnold’s direct breaking of NCAA rules or rules being broken by others while he was head coach (a recent NCAA reg assigns this responsibility to the coach). The UH is doing this in order not to have to show cause, provide a hearing or any opportunity to Gib to know what accusations may have been made against him, to see the NCAA report, or to tell his side of the story (if the UH did any of these things, then they would really kill any chance of calling it a termination without cause). Remember, that the AD approved an extension of Gib’s contract and a raise, and Gib likely would have gotten the extension and raise but for the NCAA investigation for rules violations– ergo, Gib was fired for cause both in fact and legally and the termination without cause was just a way to avoid having to provide Gib due process and a chance to confront the evidence against him. I am not a fan of Gib as a coach, but I feel that he is being wrong because the UH screwed up the investigation of the NCAA violations.
While we are on the subject of discussing the interplay between the UH administration and specifically our football programs, money has been one of the key drivers and/or limitations to the subject. With that said, while certainly crucial, it does not warrant or promise success.
One need only at the abyss that was the Notre Dame Football program for about 20 years, as demonstrative case study. So, while there was certainly the resources, aptitude (from both the administration, alumni and corporate donors) they floundered around for two decades. The debacles of Davies, Willingham, and my all-time overrated coach of the century Charlie Weis are equally legendary and comical. By my informal count between 1997 and 2010 they won a total of just 91 games, conversely our limited funded program (again informal count), over the same period, won 96.
This is a program that has an football specific operating budget, as early as 2011, that approached 30 million. So, you can have all the institutional support coupled with a singular TV contract, and it does not necessitate results. My whole point here is that there are a lot more ways to fail than to win, and it happens to everyone….

What’s the saying? Where there’s smoke, there’s fire, or is it where there’s fire, there’s smoke? NCAA investigation; Gib Arnold released. I say there’s smoke and fire here, but not in that order. But does it matter? Bottom line, UH Athletics another black eye. I also wonder if this would have happened if Jim Donovan were still AD? Maybe the ‘Wonder Blunder’ wasn’t so bad after all.
I think that Hawaii fans are pretty mild when it comes to expressing their displeasure with a coach. On the mainland you hear stories of moving vans being parked in front of the coach’s house or trash being thrown on the property by unhappy, rabid fans.
The APR. I remember being surprised that Hawaii met the requirements of the successful matriculation of 4-year student/athletes. So many defections: How can? I thought. I wonder if that’s part of the NCAA investigation.
By the sounds of it, the Aggies had to split up into two groups because the initial charter flight out to Hawaii was cancelled (mechanical problems). They eventually got in but later than expected last night. Just one reason why teams don’t like to travel to play in Hawaii.
