The football train does not stop for injuries, losses, and so forth. The Warriors are back at practice this morning.
At this point in the season, the goals are to get prepared and get healthy. Or relatively healthy. As quarterback Ikaika Woolsey said after the Nevada game: “This late in the season, no one is truly 100 percent. Everyone is a little banged up. As of now, I feel great.”

Was good to see Leo Koloamatangi in the game against Nevada. I hope he scored high enough to get another start at left guard. He’s a nice big body in the game but needs time to develop. He reminds me of the 49ers Mike Iupati.
To me, bowl eligibility after year #3 demonstrates that the HC coach has learned sufficiently from any prior mistakes and put together a system that is competitive. So 7 wins. I could see it argued that winning a majority of the season’s conference games could also be acceptable. That would be 5 conference wins plus the FBS win, so 6 wins. Anything less seems insufficient IMO to have reasonable confidence of every approaching the success level under coaches Jones and McMackin.
How can one support a coach that is weird/indifferent/wishy washy/lacking in have a good image/lacking in having respect? With newspapers articles (SA) today putting Chow’s future under the microscope, I thought I would offer my turn offs of Chow as a head coach. I don’t need to get into his coaching.
Buy-out money: Use the monies gained by the conference for the BCS teams going to a 4 team playoff this season (it’s a lot-USA article said around 75 million for the non BCS teams). Or use the body bag money from playing the teams on the road (Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio State) that the team is going play in the next two seasons. It will be money well spent to get rid of Chow, build a new foundation, right this ship and reestablish better morale and outlook for supporters/fans of the program.
1. First season here coach names all the virtues as to why it’s important in not having names on the player’s uniforms. Second year names reappear on the uniforms.
2. First season here coach wants to cultivate unity among his team by having his players locked arm in arm as the team appears on the field before the game…walking. Second year that idea is scratched.
3. Fall out with the former mascot and family. Doesn’t have the courtesy to return calls. pro day has some controversies.
4. Summer football camp during year one incurred NCAA violations.
5. Athletic report pointed wrongdoing of unauthorized expenditures by someone on Chow’s staff during Chow’s second year.
6. In year one coach hires a video person as his >GA.
7. With the ouster of his OC in year 2 coach uses no initiative in trying to fill the position.
8. Runs off key starters from his team in year one and two that went on to bigger programs and started.
9. Gives his 4 players that were convicted of DUI’s due process but doesn’t use the same judgement with his RB that was convicted of a lesser offense of a student infraction that resulted in that player being booted from the team by Chow.
10.During conference calls with the media in year one Chow publically bemoans how overwhelming the job is. Exposes himself.
11. During media day in year two and three and in other interviews Chow openly exposes himself to his hot seat status. His attitude: “I’ll work there as long as they will have me.” That was one question he should have deflected.
12. Selects so many team captains in year two that the whole process is diluted.
13. After the third day of fall camp in year one his returning starting QB is demoted to WR and then stripped of his voted captain status by his team mates.
14. In year one Chow anointed his transfer QB with star status, rave reviews and a starting job only to see it all backfire. In this situation Chow’s creditability took a hit as people began to ask what does he see that’s good in this QB?
15. Alienated key longtime supporters of the program. One was banished from the sidelines. The other handed in his resignation as a fundraiser/supporter of the program?
16. Customarily/weekly Monday morning press conferences following games was stopped by the coach. The one fault Chow has is that he’s not comfortable appearing out in the public. More of an introvert (not conducive with maintaining an image with the public). >Or were the Monday press conferences canceled by Chow to allow him to race back in forth to visit his wife in LA (prior to her being ill)?
17. Eyewitness reports of assistant coache(s)swearing and verbal abusing players during practices is tolerated by Chow. I can vouch for this. Chow’s also is a screamer and verbal abuser.
18. On road trips Chow takes his players on the most extended routes possible. Coach uses a hub along the way and usually arrives at the opponents’ venue less than 24 hours before game time. He absolutely kills his players by travelling this way. It was not until the last two road trips this season that the coach elected to fly directly and then arriving 1-2 days prior to the game…this way is normal.
19. Of his initial hires as assistant coaches two coaches (LB, TE) coached positions that they had little experience with. On the surface it looks like nepotism, religious affiliation, Utah and BYU connections were taken into consideration by Chow over other applicants.
20. Chow runs practices in segment of 5 minute stations/20 some total in practices/ where to the observer it looks like the players are not getting detailed/in depth instruction but are gaining good marching skills as the players run/march from station to station.
21. Run-ins with the media. Coach has a fuss on day one of fall camp this year. Holds animosity towards certain members of the media.
22. Chow’s personality is inspirited, drab, unemotional. One can see this on the sidelines during the game. It reflects on the players as the players take on the personification of their head coach. This you can really see. With Chow you see no outward motivation, inspiration and leadership.
23. Doesn’t bond with the fans, solicit advice or welcomes critiques. There’s no open transparency with Chow on how he run things or answers to questions that are pointed. His attitude: “It’s my way.”

I read Ferd’s article about NC with interest this morning. The article seemed to imply that NC was not going to quit and the athletic dept may not be in a position for a buy out. I am imagining many will be bothered by this possibility and some enraged. I actually would be ok with this scenario if it indeed happened. Still think next year is a brighter year for us. Hope we can finish strong with a little swag going into the off season. If we lose most of the rest of our games and Ferd’s scenario plays out it will be a long and grim off season with many finding other ways to entertain themselves on a Saturday evening. But I an haven’t lost hope. I still think NC is a very intelligent man who can make the adjustments that are needed. He may make them more slowly than I or others wish but he does seem to make them. So we shall see. It certainly makes for fiery blog commentsry. Dave Reardon’s blog yesterday was flaming with emotion about the issue of coach Chow’s tenure. Maybe we will get a little fire here today too.
After reading #6. I have a difficult time believing now.
Quite honestly the only person with any past head coaching experience on Chow’s staff, is relegated to checking up on the players’ academics. What a waste of talent.

Hawaii’s football outlook will remain moderately pessimistic simply because recruiting has been sub-par over the past three recruiting seasons. I know there are those that will staunchly argue otherwise because of players like Kennedy Tulimasealii, Keelan Ewaliko, and Devan Stubblefield that signed with Hawaii although they had other mainland options. But there has not been enough of these good players, especially in the key, offensive skill positions. But to their credit, the current coaching staff has recruited well on the defensive side at the linebacker and secondary positions, and you can see the results on the field. The questions are whether the current coaching staff can turn around recruiting for key positions like quarterback and wide receiver and develop an offensive scheme that will generate 30-35 points a game. The current offensive output is dismal and the defensive unit is stressed to keep Hawaii in the game. Currently, Hawaii’s recruiting for the 2015 season looks like the previous three seasons and are ranked very low by national football recruiting web sites.
I just hope that if for some reason it comes down to the AD needing to make a change in coaching, that they do the selection process correctly. It seems that people here go for more of the emotional “good story” hire rather than maybe sometimes someone who would be better fit for the job. Not to mention the people in the business community that has way too much influence and say when they probably don’t have the credentials or knowledge for selecting a division one football coach.
But until that day comes 100% behind Coach Chow and the team. I admire the comments he made about the questions regarding his job status and his no quit attitude. Its easy to see that is where the team has gotten their no quit, it’s never over attitude as well.

Dear Mr. Chow: You keep telling us that you will not quit; but can’t you see what you have done to our once proud Football program? In case you don’t know; you have a 6-26 record in the last 2 1/2 years. You made a promise to us that you will “chase Championships” but we are now chasing the title of the “worst football program” in the country. If you were an employee of a private company; you would have been let go a long time ago.
Please do the honorable thing, and resign; and give up your remaining salary so that we won’t go into more financial trouble. You have done enough financial damage by decling attendance, viewership, etc.
Not to mention you have caused many of us fans to become alcoholics (and depressed) by watching your boring, conservative offense.
If you care about your team, the State of Hawaii, and the entire Warrior Nation across the world, please do the right thing!

I may be wrong, but I doubt Chow will change his offensive philosophy or play calling which, so far, has been a ticket to disaster.

IIRC, the football $$$ sharing agreement with UH/MWC is UH does not receive a share until each WMC member share exceeds the PPV $$$ UH collects – last year, MWC members earned about $1,75 million from football
Since we cannot afford to buy our coach’s contract (although imo, I think we cannot afford not to), since coach has a doctorate degree, maybe UH could “reassign” him to be a teacher at UH Manoa or a UH community college, or even give him a desk job (assist. athletic director?). Didn’t they do that with Jim Donovan? May not be possible with his rate of pay and unions.

To those thinking that voting (withholding) with their wallets is akin to helping our overall program overall? That thinking is the equivalent of seriously and divisively working to get rid of UH football permanently here in our community.
When consumers withhold and don’t buy anything from a business, what happens? Either the business changes to meet needs and expectations of consumers or They fold!
Our UH sports teams are not this kind of business that we would ever want it to fold. Right?
If we want it around, we just have to support it thru being there (buying tickets), contributing funds if not enough ppl show up to be there (buying tickets) and donations, then provide encouragement for every little thing good (this is the one true way to get what you want – no one likes to listen to complaining and swearing all the time, they like hearing about what they’re doing right. Key is to get them to do what you want – at first – even if it’s just the little things – then progressively encourage them to change what they’re not doing what you want, but first you have to establish the “in”).
If you love UH fb here in Hawai’i Nei, think beyond the current situation for the longevity of the program to keep it in existence beyond any current coaches, AD, or players, for years and decades to come.

Yesterday’s news, in case you missed it: UH-Colorado State game time has been announced as 5:00 pm MST (2:00 pm HST) and will be televised on ESPNU.
#23: There is no way chow should be reassigned to some kind of teaching position at UH as a substitute to buying out his contract. UH is an academic institution, and is actually a pretty good one (one of the only Tier I research institutions in the pacific). UH doesn’t exist to support the football program. If chow wants a tenure track professorship, then he needs to apply for a position, just like everyone else, and get evaluated on his publications, his work in the field, and so on and so forth.
You don’t undermine the academic integrity of an institution (becuase god knows, the legislature and UH upper campus leadership is doing that enough already) for a failed football coach.

UHfan808 has a point– if you withhold support and walk away, there might not be anything for you to return to in the future– or nothing you’d like to return to. Do what you can. I’m still going to all Aloha stadium games (did I mention all the tailgates are great?)
BJ knows it may come down to him or Chow. I can see him making an argument for keeping Chow if he wins 5 games. Anything less and there’s no way he can keep Chow and his own job.
I have no animosity towards Chow as a person but am highly critical of his head coaching style. I don;t blame Chow for the mess we’re in I blame the process that was used to select him. He applied along with others and the process deemed him to the best suited for the job.
Chow was one of the leading candidates to fill Von Appen’s vacancy. Imagine what our program would be like today if JJ didn’t fall into Hugh’s lap and Chow was selected. Man, Hurricane Fred followed by Stormin Norman, I shudder at the thought.

I’m surprised this is even being brought up. We all know that even if given the option, Chow would not take it. He’s a coach.
Coach Chow has a proven successful football coaching career in college football and the NFL. Someone with this stellar record definitely has reasons for poor seasons at Hawaii. I submit that 1) The major college football conferences have discovered and now intensely recruit our best 3 star and 4 star high school players and we do not counter with compelling, competitive offers. We even see head coaches in the islands. 2) our legislature does not support UH facilities funding comparable to other major college football programs, 3) the UH alumni is passive and disinterested in supporting the UH football program, 4) Hawaii fans have mediocre loyalty to the states only college football team and do not show up for games, 5) State political and business leadership necessary to inspire support and participation in the football program is lacking. Correct 4 of the 5 above and we can have a top 25 team EVERY YEAR. Attacking coach Chow is petty and misses the big picture. Come on guys, let’s focus on advocating critical change for the good. Otherwise, we will perennially end up whining instead of celebrate big wins. KL

#33 I believe that you are mistaken on a point. UH does realize a revenue stream from PPV ($2.3 million seemed like a number that was tossed about). It would be interesting to see how many subscribe to PPV, how many view in multiples (on Oahu) and what that approximate total would be.
UH is open to suggestions on new costumed mascot
June Watanabe writes in today’s SA about the schools search for a new mascot.
For two odd years now UH has been without a mascot and now somebody from the media knocks on UH’s door, seeks answers, and this prompts the school (Jay) with a little more urgency in replacing Vili.
This is incomprehensible.
This is a crying shame.
It begs the question what has Jay been doing (besides tweeting) for the past odd two years in his search of replacing Vili? Where’s Jay’s wherewithal on this matter? Leadership? Responsibility?
The void of not having a mascot for the past odd two years is sad.
It’s a spirit induced, enriching experience lost for the departing seniors and fans that can’t be replaced. The sad message here is how Jay values the departing seniors, fans and community by depriving them of this experience (mascot) by not coming up with a mascot within a timely period. Two years and counting is pure negligence.
The proverbial ball started rolling today, good, but it should have started rolling a long time ago. Jay had the ball in his court and just sat on it. Bad.
A caller had an interesting idea for the “we getum fund raiser. He suggested that a program could be worked out with Reynold’s Recycling where a bin would be set aside for people who wanted to donate their recyclables to the UH fund. A twist on that idea would be to have a bin labeled – recyclables to recycle Chow.
#33 #37….good points. I think we should remember that when we walk away we are walking away from OUR program. Not BJ’s program, not Norm’s program. We were here before they came and we will be here after they have gone. I understand and respect those who have walked away because they find the experience of going to the games so frustrating and disappointing. But we shouldn’t confuse that walking away with some sort of “vote” that has an impact. The only impact it has is to reduce the funds available for the AD to act and narrow his choices. Only rudimentary math is needed to know we have a failing football program. But it will not always be this way. The turn will come with or without Norm and BJ.

A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds – i.e. the small-minded are crippled by the feeling that they have to be consistent – never to change their minds on the basis of new information – because they’re afraid of offending the kind of people who like certainties and think someone changing their opinion is bad.
The thought also occurs to me about people complaining about the downtown boys.
If we donate money to the UH AD instead of words, maybe we would have some influence. I get tired of people saying that the Punahou Mafia, the Iolani Mafia, the Sicilian Mafia or Ellison or Case etc should throw in a whole bunch of money to bail out the AD or buy out Chow or hire some big-name coach.
Maybe we should look at our wallets before pick-pocketing someone else’s wallet.

TV suitor says UH should dump pay-per-view in its next rights deal

The University of Hawaii enters the final year of its contract with Oceanic Time Warner Cable on Monday and an announced competitor for the rights says the school should do away with pay-per-view of its sports events in the future.
Revenue from pay-per-view and Aloha Stadium ticket sales have dropped in recent years and Rick Blangiardi, general manager of KHNL/KGMB, said “What is going on now cannot be sustained. The arrows are all going in one direction. I think we can help.” The stations are a news partner of the Star-Advertiser.
Blangiardi said, “The (UH athletic) program has lost its soul and identity mired in a sea of cable programs that most people are confused, if not clueless as to ‘live,’ ‘delayed’ or date and time for that matter. UH has been relegated to sharing a platform with Hawaii’s high schools, in and of itself, not a bad partner, but only adding more confusion and dilution of the UH brand.” Two years into a three-year deal, Blangiardi asked, “What comes to mind as a ‘value proposition’ offered by Oceanic to the enhancement of UH sports to the people of Hawaii? If you can think of one, I would be curious to hear.” Oceanic president Bob Barlow said in an email response, “We will take the high road in regards to Mr. B’s comments by not commenting.” Blangiardi and then-athletic director Stan Sheriff began offering a wide slate of UH sports in 1984. KHNL and KFVE (with which KHNL and KGMB have a shared services agreement) remained a partner until 2011, when Oceanic took over sole operation. The deal guarantees UH $2.3 million per year for the rights with an opportunity to make more if sales hit various targets. UH said it received $2.45 million for 2012.
The current contract expires June 30, 2014, and gives Oceanic exclusive rights to begin negotiating an extension Nov. 1, 2013. The agreement says if no deal is reached by Feb. 28, 2014, the school may open talks to other parties.
Blangiardi said, “I’m saying openly and publicly, we want UH back and we are prepared to do whatever we need to make that happen.” He said he has notified athletic director Ben Jay of his interest in competing for the contract.
Jay and UH officials declined comment.
“Just our news presence alone and what we do online with Hawaii News Now, our combination of our over-the-air and our digital, they have nothing that compares to that,” Blangiardi said. “Then you add the promotional platforms that we have (with) KGMB and KHNL and our ability to create top-of-the-mind awareness and to direct people to the events or to the telecasts. What I see us being able to do is a lot of promotion creating top of mind on stations people are watching. And that is part of what is needed in this equation, winning back hearts and minds of the people” According to recent Nielsen reports, there are 438,000 TV households in Hawaii, while cable has 87 percent penetration and satellite 9 percent.
“Given not only our history but our strength of what we’ve become right now and what we represent for the university as voice to the state of Hawaii, we’re much stronger than anything they have to offer,” Blangiardi said. “The only thing I would give Time Warner in this occasion is the ability to write a larger check. After that, the scales tip considerably.”

Oceanic Time Warner Cable will remain the exclusive TV rights holder for University of Hawaii sports through June 30, 2020, under an agreement announced today.
The pay-per-view airing of Rainbow Warrior football will continue through the 2019 season.
The six-year extension with Oceanic calls for UH to receive a minimum payment of $2.3 million this year escalating to $2,539,386 at the contract’s conclusion as long as at least seven football games are made available to Oceanic each year, according to the agreement. UH can earn a higher fee if specified net revenue targets are reached.
UH had been receiving a minimum $2.3 million per year for live TV and PPV rights and received as much as $2.6 million in 2008.
Oceanic is mandated to do at least 60 events a year, the same threshold as in previous contracts.
Under terms of the existing agreement, Friday was the final day of an exclusive four-month window for Oceanic to negotiate an extension with UH. Had a deal not been reached, UH would have been free to open up bidding to other parties.
KHNL/KGMB, which has a “shared services agreement” with KFVE, had sought an opportunity to make a proposal.

In public Chow expresses much admiration for his team, as he should and often characterizes them as fine young men, which they are. Why then the need for swearing at them? I’m no Pollyanna but for a coach who is a Mormon – isn’t swearing a practice that shouldn’t be tolerated? Coach Chow I ask you – shouldn’t you treat others, even though they are your players, the same way how you would wish to be treated?

Every suggestion we made at the Tsaiko only meeting with BJ was shot down even after he said how well it worked at OSU.
What cracks me up about the upcoming game with Utah State are the stories about USU having 2 true freshmen as their 1 & 2 QBs due to injuries. The articles should focus on their defense which is still good which our “inept” offensive leadership must contend with.

What a sad day for our basketball team. Gib tried so hard to live down the Arnold name from his father’s tenure as a basketball coach but unfortunately the legacy continues. I thought he was doing a fairly good job as a coach. It was mentioned Wallace might be brought back to coach the rest of the season or Benji Taylor as the interim. Please no more Wallace.
This is what’s F’d up with college athletics…
Jaemis Winston has been accused of sexual assault, shoplifting seafood, yelling obscene things in public, and now in hot water over getting paid for autographs… Result: he’s is still playing football. No NCAA investigation.
Todd Gurley, tells the truth and admitted to getting paid by same company that is selling Winston’s merchandise… Result: Suspended indefinitely. No NCAA investigation.
UH self reports a minor infraction (at least appears to be much less serious than Winston and Gurley’s infractions)… Result: NCAA investigates BB program and Athletic Department. No accusations have been made as of now. UH appears to be firing their head BB coach.

Looks like the BB program is going back into the tank in a couple years. Gib as assembled some nice talent this year, but if UH doesn’t do a good job finding the replacement, all the upward momentum Gib has built and surely the recruiting will crash back to the Bob Nash days and the last few years of Wallace.

amela #71~ in the last few years, we have seen many 1st time players starting against UH and put up All-American type of numbers against us. We just have to wait and see. I hope our defense has a game plan to rattle the qb.
IT’S OFFICIAL: Gib Arnold and Branyn Akana are out.
UH had suspended Akana for a month last year which stayed under wraps, but now looks like that situation has gotten both him and boss Arnold fired. I’m thinking Arnold either turned a blind eye or covered up. However, they Arnold suspended Akana so I’m not sure what the role Arnold played in this.
I sure would like to see the report by the NCAA that is causing Arnold to lose his coaching position.
Put me in the no thanks to Reilly Wallace camp. I don’t want to see our 85+ ppg team score in the low 60’s with the flex motion.
Regardless of what they found or what they did, I am sad to see Coach Arnold go. He may not have had the best records or got us a conference championship, but he brought excitement back to a program that was lacking it for a few years. I don’t see Riley coming back either. I think he enjoys his current job too much to go back to coaching.
Perhaps the UH athletic dept should hire Barnum and Bailey and rebrand themselves.

The BB program is right at the doorstep to doing some special things with some special athletes, now it’s all in jeopardy in falling back down come 2015-2016 season.
What is wrong with college athletics? The NCAA. As oldtimer 808 labeled them, they are a draconian bully that uses gestapo like tactics.
From a self-reporting, they don’t just investigate the reported violation, but use that as an excuse to do a fishing expedition. Imagine if HPD did this — using a traffic violation to begin an inquisition. No probable cause to justify such an apparent wide ranging inquiry. And, you think the IRS is bad.
And they use lawyers to do this. Guess they didn’t learn about due process. Ooops. That only applies on a non-collegiate context.
I expect at least the death penalty for UNC. But, let’s see what they do.
I hope they let Taylor coach the season. I don’t know much about him or how he is as a coach, but at least there would be continuity in the team considering how close the start of the season is.

Well with this on Ben’s plate, it may be safe to say that there are probably no dollars, where there was none to start with, to possibly buy out any contracts. There cannot be any more red ink with this event (payouts, plus lawyer’s fees, etc.).
This could be one of the reasons he could not spend more time getting UH a new mascot.

94… The NCAA doesn’t have the spine to “death penalty” UNC, which is the most storied college basketball program in the nation. UNC basketball is one of the largest revenue generators for the NCAA outside of football, possibly the biggest.
UNC absolutely deserves to have all athletics shut down since it appears most of the sports had athletes take part in the fraud at some point along with a few thousand general students.
My guess is that the NCAA will probably vacate UNC’s records and titles during the period in question and suspend them from post-season and call it good, maybe sprinkle in some scholarship penalties also. Again, the NCAA doesn’t have the balls to death penalty UNC.

Firing before knowing what the problems were and consequences is poor management and if the AD thinks this solves or give relief, he should be fired too. Assumption is not grounds for firing and whatever facts the AD has, he should have checked with his counsel, then called Coach Gib in to explain to him what was wrong. He could have asked Coach Gib to resign instead of using the media to make it sound like Coach Gib was a criminal. Best solution for UH is to fire Ben Jay and find an AD who understands life in Hawaii.

Bill Belichick was 36-44 and was run out after producing 1 winning season in 5 seasons in Cleveland. Take away his 1994 (11-5) season and he was 14 games under 0.500. He turned out ok after that.
On the opposite end of the spectrum, you might have heard of a coach named June Jones. After going 76-41 at UH, he went 36-43 before abruptly retiring after 2 games this year at SMU. Had he rode out 2014, he’d likely end up with over 50 losses at SMU in 6+ years.

116… It’s all about contract terms… UH doesn’t lose any money if they don’t hire another coach.
Gib’s contract ends this season. So UH only owes him for this year’s salary. Assistant coaches are typically a year by year contract, so schools usually don’t have to pay future salaries when they fire them.
Chow’s contract runs through 2016, so UH would owe Chow a reported $750k ($550k for next season + a reduced buyout in the final season).
Also, Gib’s contract is somewhere in the mid-$300k range, and they have already received services from Gib (training camp and practice up to now) for this season so it’s not a huge hit.
Tried to tell you boys about Fib for years but many of you Kool Aiders shouted me down. Fib is no good people. He can go back to selling used cars now. From the beginning could not believe Donovan would of hired someone just coming off an NCAA investigation at USC. Glad he is gone now I can go back cheering for the Green and White.

According to reports back when UH self-reported the infraction(s), it appeared to be minor, so firing the HC seemed highly unlikely since they already suspended Akana last year.
I think the investigation is being used as a convenient excuse to bring on-board Jay’s preferred BB coach to make his mark on the UH Athletics. Both Chow and Arnold were Jim Donovan hires. We have to wait and see.

Gib was known to work outside of the system when it came to funding. The China trip didn’t cost UHAD a penny. Gib found a way for private donations to cover it. When you look at the amount of time he spends recruiting there’s no way his apportioned recruiting budget from the UHAD would be able to cover all his expenses let alone for the entire staff.
I am getting more and more impressed with the innovative and “out of the box” thinking going on at UH. I bet there are hardly any college athletic departments that have the innovative vision to bring back coaches they have run off to give them another try. This Riley Wallace idea is shear brilliance! It’s a strategy that is bound to have our opponents off balance just thinking about it. Now I’m not sure of this but I’ll bet BJ is already having secret talks with Greg McMackin to see if we can cycle him through again when we run off coach Chow. I know BJ hasn’t been here that long but with his kinda savvy I’ll bet he’s searching for a spot for Fred Von Appen. You gotta be impressed with this kind of innovation.

And I love the idea of self imposed sanctions. We find a problem, report ourselves and then deliver the death penalty before those wimps at NCAA even have a chance to mess with us. By the time they get here with their puny sanctions they will be shamed all the way back across the Pacific. I hope those entitled folks at North Carolina are paying attention and can follow our lead. They run a phony school for athletes for years and then pretend “hey we didn’t know.” Then the NCAA can give them a pass because they are such nice people and really had no idea that college athletes were supposed to go to school. Very irritated with that other blog’s host making up his own news by tweeting about putting UH putting together a search committee for a new head coach and the blogging about the non-issue of the AD standing behind Chow. Regardless of if I think Chow should stay or go, it’s just irresponsible journalism for him to try to push his own agenda using newspaper resources. He can write editorials all he wants when he’s not a newspaper employee.
At this point, it’s all “water under the bridge” so to speak, as Coach Arnold has been relieve to his duties.
But, none of us really knows that the violations are that the NCAA will allege that this self-imposed punishment is for. The school is sacrificing its coach to save itself from ? Everyone here thinks they know what happened, but we don’t as the NCAA has not stated what their investigators found, and UH has not commissioned its own investigation as UNC did (the Wanstein report). I guess not severe enough to warrant it, but severe enough to impose penalties before anyone knows what the problem(s) are. UH may know factually what transpired, but what is the charge(s)?
Even an innuendo that a player will also be suspended by info on the “coconut wireless.” Akin to entering a plea before a judge to a 20-year sentence before you find out if you are charged with a misdemeanor or a felony based on the fact uncovered. Why? Not unless the UH Admin knows, but is not sharing. Maybe need to file an OIP request?
As noted in a Fox sport article, Minnesota’s basketball program was penalized by the NCAA with a 1 year ban from postseason, a reduction of scholarships, and vacating (from records) of its Final Four appearance because its coach knowingly wrote papers for 18 players over a 5-year period.
Now comes UNC — bogus class scheme involving 3,100 players (47.4% athletes) over an 18 year period. If there is not “death penalty” for this that covers all of their athletics, don’t know what would trigger this, except for repeat offenders. If this is the case, then “go big, or go home.” Rob Fort Knox.
The bigger issues is it only involved 47.4% of the athletes. Talk about compromising the credibility of your academic institution.

With the NCAA investigation hovering over the basketball program it didn’t send any red flags to Jay as the athletic director gave his basketball coach a 3 year extension, rollovers, and a 21k raise in salary. This was reported back in July.
Where else do you see an employee, who’s deep in hot water with an ongoing investigation, get rewarded? UH. Jay surprisingly gave his basketball coach all the bells and whistles. Yet a wiser athletic director, I would think, would have limited Arnold’s options because of the NCAA investigation and have the basketball coach sign a provisional contract.
How this plays out will be interesting…Jay’s timely (or untimely) course of action in finding a new basketball coach and the bottom line of how much tax payer dollars were wasted when the basketball coach was signed to a 3 year contract extension…and of course, Jay’s future.

This is the wrong move. This is just conjecture, but when the facts come out, I think it’s going to look like the athletic department overreacted. How about self-imposed post-season ban? Doesn’t that sound more reasonable? Hawaii isn’t exactly setting the basketball world on fire, but I just hate the idea of starting all over from ground zero. After the Bob Nash regime, all I wanted was a competitive team, and that’s what Arnold delivered. What it comes down to is that our current athletic director didn’t hire Coach Arnold. Had he, I think we wouldn’t be looking for a replacement. If Hawaii doesn’t qualify for the NCAA, or NIT, this hasty dismissal is going to look stupid. To be fair to UH, I do wonder why so many players kept leaving our program on a yearly basis.

Some may share my opinion some may not though to each their own…In regards to hiring coaches going forward Hawaii needs to hire young energetic coaches who are able to sell the program to students, recruits and fans..I think that is 1 thing that we lack we need coaches who connect not only to student athletes but regular students and the general public

Bryson … I agree that they should go after young, energetic coaches. But if we’re talking football, I think there should be experience at the assistant positions. You want a young HC on the upward trend with experience around him to draw from. Right now we have the reverse.

#165. WD. Never said Gib did anything illegal. He had a way of working outside of the system to get funds. He was his own man in many regards. I have a feeling his firing had more to do with issues of a personal nature. Something along the lines of what someone would deem as insubordination, doing things you were asked not to do.
The party line on the NCAA investigation was no comment until they know what the allegations were. Jay, the Chancellor and their “advisors” were in the process to were making a list of possible self imposed penalties they could impose once they knew the severity of the charges. Gib for whatever reason broke the party line and issued a statement in defense of himself and his staff. That may have been the last straw as far as someone(s) was concerned.

#168 — Ben Jay had a six-year tenure as Senior Associate Athletics Director for Finance and Operations at Ohio State University
The spending to get rid of Gib will make Chow’s job more secure.
But this really is Chow’s peak year. Next year he loses senior leadership on both offense and defense and key players– especially on defense. We lose our most valuable player in Harding who is really irreplaceable.
It will be a rebuilding next year until 2016, when we hit another peak like this year (it should be a peak this year), but we will need to have a QB ready to go in 2016 assuming that we use Witeck next year.
More important, Chow must be open to changes in the offense in 2016 that will allow us to take advantage of Witeck’s ability as a QB (assuming he plays up to his reputation)– play this year’s offense, and we use half of what Witeck might be able to do.
The NCAA, by their actions, will discourage other schools from self-reporting any possible transgression.
Cappie, it was not the NCAA that imposed the “sanction”– it was UH who got rid of Gib and Akana. We will need to await the NCAA’s actions. However, it has been rumored that the NCAA was expected to reduce scholarships– this may have come from our NCAA specialist attorney. Firing Gib may have prevented some of these tougher sanctions.
