Game day: San Diego State

SAN DIEGO — Ikaika Woolsey or Beau Reilly?

If Woolsey is in good health, he’s expected to start. He was in good health during yesterday’s practice, taking most of the first-team reps. If Woolsey isn’t in good health, Reilly is ready to go. Reilly took most of the first-team reps during the past week.

In either scenario, Eric Prater is No. 3. Prater was the scout quarterback yesterday.

Because of the 64-player travel limitation, the Warriors had to improvise to form scout teams.

Yesterday also was a real — although abbreviated — practice. That’s why the Warriors practiced at San Diego Mesa College instead of Qualcomm Stadium.

Here’s Reilly and his family:

  1. Shoko October 18, 2014 8:37 am

Looks like Reilly has a nice big family.

Just thinking, but if Woolsey has a bad back why not start Reilly so that he has more time to recuperate.

  2. DaveLetterMan October 18, 2014 8:38 am

    Morning Tsaikos!
Game day, Go Warriors beat dem Aztecs!

  3. Shoko October 18, 2014 8:39 am

Do UH student managers get partial scholarships or discounts on school expenses such as books?

  4. Stephen Tsai October 18, 2014 8:45 am

    Shoko:
I think student managers get tuition waivers. That’s not bad, considering it comes to $5,300 a semester for residents. But that’s a lot of hours and no spending moolah.

  5. Stephen Tsai October 18, 2014 8:48 am

    Shoko:
Reilly’s family is really nice and friendly.
Then again, I think all parents of players are nice and friendly. Woolsey’s grandparents attend every UH home practice. Kent Graham is a really nice guy. And, of course, I went to UH at the same time as Jimmy Higgins. I met Max Wittek’s dad during training camp. Also a friendly guy.

  6. Stephen Tsai October 18, 2014 8:49 am

Jaki Falch and Kyle Kamau were on the same staff.
Kyle now works with the Philadelphia Eagles.
Last year’s student worker, Avanti, has an internship with the Cleveland Browns.

  7. Stephen Tsai October 18, 2014 8:58 am

What’s the weather report on Oahu?

  12. tomk October 18, 2014 9:48 am

  13. Claud Sutcliffe October 18, 2014 10:15 am

    Hawai’i 35 – San Diego State 31
Go ‘Bows! You can do it!

  14. tom-warriornation October 18, 2014 10:20 am

On national TV tonight (CBS Sports network); look for our 350+ Hawaii fans sitting behind our team bench from the 50 to 20 yard lines (Field sections 2-6), 10-20 rows up from the field, including the families of Kody Afusia, Tyler Hadden, Malachi Mateo, TJ Tamatuia, Simon Poti, Ruben Guzman, and Jordan Puu’ Robinson, also former UH players Nicky Clark and Cliff Sanchez. The first 9 rows may be empty, or may be partially occupied by kids.

  15. tom-warriornation October 18, 2014 10:21 am

Why didn’t the team have their walkthrough/ practice at Qualcomm stadium?

  16. islandman October 18, 2014 10:26 am

    13. — Can’t give the secret plays away.

  17. Haleakala October 18, 2014 10:46 am

  24. Bowwar October 18, 2014 11:45 am

Might be good to start Reilly & have Woolsey come off the bench, as it seemed to give Woolsey a better feel of the game.

  25. Tiki808 October 18, 2014 11:46 am

Family: It will be a toss up. +3 points

  26. Bowwar October 18, 2014 11:46 am

    Can’t remember which one.

  29. Willie October 18, 2014 12:18 pm

Good fortune for all with Ana missing us. Hoping good fortune is with the Warriors @ SD today!

Watching UCLA – Cal shoot out. Former Warrior wideout T. Davis continues to impress. Wondering what could have been if he decided to stay at UH?

  30. Turfwar October 18, 2014 12:22 pm

Koolau Theaters $12.00. But will e on cable if you have Oceanic sports package.

    Mahalo Nutmgger…

Trevor Davis has already caught a TD pass for Cal…Gotta ask ourselves, why we couldn’t keep him and others…

  33. Bryson October 18, 2014 12:40 pm

I hope somebody told that kicker to take his shoes off the table. Come on man!

    GO WARRIORS!!!!!

  46. kev-1 October 18, 2014 1:27 pm

So . . . It was no secret that Woolsey was banged up a little. But the reps that Reilly was getting this week were reported as getting him ready for backup. The media did a pretty good job of hiding just how banged up Woolsey is. Now there’s talk of Reilly even possibly starting? Wow!

  47. st. anthony trojan October 18, 2014 1:36 pm

the cowboys lost another one…sad lost for them..

  48. pollypicador October 18, 2014 2:09 pm

I see that another UH football game is on DirectTV today-channel 221 CBSNN.

    That the way to go.

Why pay big money for o-16’s televised Warrior football package when you can tap right into DirectTV.

Trust me when I say this, some of the bars around Oahu are right on top of this. In the old days these owners would pay 1-3 K per season (depending on the number of seats in their bar) to subscribe to UH football games on o-16.. now they a look for cost saving in the way of DirectTV.

The only drawback are UH games that o-16 has rights to (and then there would be no UH games in these bars) but that is getting less with the MWC TV/ PAC-12 TV/and the network that the Rice game was on–cutting into o-16 production and right to the games this football season. O-16, considering what their bid was to UH, I would think has to be losing money with UH football games. It would be great if UH wins today and CBSNN picks away another game from o-16.

Good wishes to the Warrior today. Get another win.

  49. Stephen Tsai October 18, 2014 3:14 pm

Koolau Theaters is the best place to watch movies on the Windward side. Heck, on any side.
Great, free parking (right in front of the theater), superior popcorn (and hotdogs and nachos), theater-seating and no crowds.
    Shhhh. Our secret.

  50. Stephen Tsai October 18, 2014 3:19 pm

The Hawaii tailgate is going full blast.
No pictures, because Ferd is driving and didn’t want to stop. But it’s a happenin’ place. (Do young’uns still say happenin’?)

  51. Da Punchbowl Kid October 18, 2014 3:27 pm

Sorry to see about TD, but we’re here for the WARRIORS! Ya know, the ones who stayed in the program, who represent UH and our state and have a game today – those guys!

    GO WARRIORS!!!
    GO WARRIORS!!!
    GO WARRIORS!!!
    GO WARRIORS!!!

  52. st. anthony trojan October 18, 2014 3:39 pm

yea best of wishes to them warriors..n hope when the final whistle is blown..that we are on top..n 4 the most part injury free…

  53. Former UH Athlete October 18, 2014 4:02 pm

4:30 p.m. crew. I have a picture of you at 5:20 p.m. moving plates. What do you think of that phone picture? After your dinner shift, 3rd floor. Really? Watching the game from a wifi station. Yeah, you know minimum wage employees. Tuff? +3 Hawai’i and a wuess. No paper work please. I still pick SDSU. I got it too. Long time ago understood it. Really? I’m from a wifi station, not at your hotel though. Why comment on that? You love each other don’t you? Just watch the game from the cafeteria. pfff! Sorry!

  61. Marleysdad October 18, 2014 4:38 pm

    Game Time!!!

  62. Matt October 18, 2014 4:48 pm

SDSU TD. Defense needs to step up.

  63. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 18, 2014 4:49 pm

That was not defense being played, that was just atrocious…

  64. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 18, 2014 5:04 pm

SDSU does not respect our defense.

  65. Mytake October 18, 2014 5:11 pm

The front 3 D are getting manhandled

  66. 99club October 18, 2014 5:11 pm

10 – 0 them. They are tough to stop on the ground.

  67. Matt October 18, 2014 5:31 pm

missed FG after a turnover deep in their territory. Still 10-0 SDSU.

  68. Warrior Fan October 18, 2014 5:35 pm

Ita going to be a long game for us.. C’mon Offense.. Go Warriors!

  69. Tiki808 October 18, 2014 5:36 pm

Scary weather in Hawai’i. Watch yourselves out there. Cockpits. I don’t care, but just be on the look out for strong winds. Still around in Hawai’i. May be canceled is UH flight to Hawai’i. San Diego State 10 Hawai’i 0. Windy and cloudy in Hawai’i.

  70. jeezy33 October 18, 2014 5:57 pm

Hawaii offense = snoozer…. It’s like Hawaii didn’t even game plan for SDSU… Just use same Wyoming game plan vs completely different team..

  71. 4-Prong October 18, 2014 6:04 pm

Why the hell is woolsey running a draw play with 30 seconds left in the half?

    this offense is pathetic.

  72. 99club October 18, 2014 6:07 pm

TD Hawaii! Way to go Marcus Kemp! 10-7 them.

  73. Marleysdad October 18, 2014 6:07 pm

    Hail Mary!!!!!!!!

  74. 4-Prong October 18, 2014 6:08 pm

    what a lucky touchdown.

  75. Matt October 18, 2014 6:08 pm

TD!!! Ugly, but I’ll take it.

  76. 4-Prong October 18, 2014 6:09 pm

this is qb progression though. two games ago, woolsey would’ve thrown this pass into the stands.

  77. jeezy33 October 18, 2014 6:15 pm

    73. lol true

  78. Hank October 18, 2014 6:21 pm

    4-Prong

Isn’t that what he did on the last play of the first half against Rice? Progression indeed.

  79. Manoa#1 October 18, 2014 6:23 pm

    Hawaii and Chows offense Sucks.

  80. Hank October 18, 2014 6:26 pm

Nice concentration by Kemp though. Our team is playing hard. Anything can happen in the 2nd half.

  81. Manoa#1 October 18, 2014 6:27 pm

77 yds in the first half before that Hail Mary.

  82. azwarrior22 October 18, 2014 6:28 pm

start Beau Reilly in the second half. We need some offense.

  83. Hank October 18, 2014 6:31 pm

Plays like that hail mary can change things.

  84. Marleysdad October 18, 2014 6:32 pm

    Ewaliko

  85. Ben A Lurker October 18, 2014 6:33 pm

I really hate this ref. He’s always hot bad attitude!

  86. Marleysdad October 18, 2014 6:33 pm

    Bullsh!!!!!!t

  87. Ben A Lurker October 18, 2014 6:34 pm

    hot = has

  88. Tiki808 October 18, 2014 6:34 pm

I pick San Diego State Aztecs because they have better uniforms. 10 – 7 San Diego State Aztecs still yet my choice, 3rd quater. I don’t like the other guy, so I’ll choose San Diego State to win. I went to LAX 17 times already. Get the idea?

  89. Matt October 18, 2014 6:38 pm

    Good job Defense!

  90. 4-Prong October 18, 2014 6:38 pm

    85. please stop talking.

  91. Abunai October 18, 2014 6:40 pm

If the ref called that a hold on the kickoff return TD then SDSU has been doing that all game…. Refs better call a fair game!!

  92. Tiki808 October 18, 2014 6:43 pm

That means that nice girl or cheerleader he saw already had sex or wants someone’s kid, whoever she invited to the game. Too hot!

  93. Warrior Fan October 18, 2014 6:50 pm

    Let’s go Warriors!

  94. Warrior Fan October 18, 2014 6:50 pm

Defense we need to force another punt on this drive

  95. Tiki808 October 18, 2014 6:50 pm

Maybe one of you from S.A. from your headquarters can fit in a picture or two of the game? 3rd quarter. Show the cheerleading squad. I already liked SDSU to win. Show the cheering squad. Please!

  96. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 18, 2014 6:53 pm

    Corners…we need corners.

  97. Warrior Fan October 18, 2014 6:55 pm

Alright Offense. Can we please utilize our tight ends on this drive.. We need a TD on this drive because SDSU figured out our defense

  98. 4-Prong October 18, 2014 6:56 pm

SDSU cheerleading squad is probably more interesting than the UH offense. although there was a pretty bad looking cheerleader during one of the commercial breaks.

  99. Tiki808 October 18, 2014 6:58 pm

I’m thanking California for this game. If Hawai’i wins, it’s California. If San Diego wins, it becomes them. Still thinking in terms of statistics. San Diego State to win. “Punch his lights out for me.”

  100. 3-Prong October 18, 2014 7:05 pm

    Right Now!

  101. Tiki808 October 18, 2014 7:14 pm

    17 SDSU 10 Hawai’i, 4th quarter.

  102. Tiki808 October 18, 2014 7:16 pm

    try just hype!

  103. Tiki808 October 18, 2014 7:19 pm

To drink water is why the rains are here. They’re ok, I’m thanking God. “make sure you’re there.”

  104. Abunai October 18, 2014 7:28 pm

I’m sorry but put in the other QB… Woolsey can’t throw…. That int was short that’s why it got int. If you are going to throw that ball it needs to be thrown on the outside shoulder period….

  105. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 18, 2014 7:33 pm

Who needs to tackle when you can just eat burritos.

  106. azwarrior22 October 18, 2014 7:37 pm

Put in Beau…we have no offense.

  107. 4-Prong October 18, 2014 7:42 pm

illegal forward pass then a second pick in a row?? WHY IS WOOLSEY STILL PLAYING QB??? HE IS TERRIBLE.

  108. MattO October 18, 2014 7:45 pm

Pretty bad game all around… no two ways about it.

  109. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 18, 2014 7:46 pm

Wow the blatant holding by SDSU and useless referees making this game that much easier for SDSU.

  110. ArcumFortis October 18, 2014 7:46 pm

What can you say…..offence awful….changes badly needed from the top down.

  111. 4-Prong October 18, 2014 7:49 pm

    lol blatant holding. ORLY?

  112. whitey October 18, 2014 7:53 pm

Entering this game, I thought the Rainbow Warriors would progress out of their offensive mistakes, but I guess it is pretty hard to change. I was hoping for the best for Coach Chow, but it looks like Father Time is passing him. At this point, am hoping that the Rainbow Warriors can still put together a winning streak, but the light on the horizon is disappearing as each game passes.

  113. Sad UH Fan October 18, 2014 7:53 pm

Everyone needs to realize, this isnt just on Woolsey. Our secondary is a joke, and so are our recievers.

  114. oneseason October 18, 2014 7:53 pm

Woolsey’s long bomb passing is not up to the play calling. But why are the coaches calling those plays? Woolsy’s passing otherwise looks better to me.

  115. Tempmanoa October 18, 2014 7:53 pm

Sad effort by our team. Just shredded physically on both sides of the ball. Never had a chance. We went with a plan to run against a team with a very strong run defense, and a very strong running attack. No way we can win by running. But on the other hand we cannot seem to pass. Get the passing game going, please.

  116. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 18, 2014 7:54 pm

There are 2 standards of holding tonight. “Allowable holding” by SDSU and “whenever we touch a SDSU player it’s holding for Hawaii.”

  117. Irock October 18, 2014 7:54 pm

Woolsey sucks, period!!! Colt, you really spoiled us!

  118. MattO October 18, 2014 7:54 pm

    Embarrassing…

  119. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 18, 2014 7:55 pm

    4-Prong,

    BLAAAATANT

  120. whitey October 18, 2014 8:00 pm

No one knows what the future holds, but right now it is getting harder and harder to stay upbeat about the Rainbow Warriors under Coach Chow.

  121. Abunai October 18, 2014 8:01 pm

No excuses but man o man I saw a lot of holding calls that wasn’t called against SDSU!! Did the refs get paid?

Hard to win a game with a sucky QB and refs letting a lot of uncalled holding calls against SDSU….

I believe if they didn’t call a hold vs UH on the kickoff return for touchdown it would’ve been a different outcome…. (Maybe) but we will never know now…

  122. 4-Prong October 18, 2014 8:05 pm

abunai. don’t kid yourself. those millions of “blatant” holding calls you guys are seeing are probably just fan bias. even if ewaliko’s td wasn’t called back, UH’s offense was so inept, it wouldn’t have really made a difference. thank the football gods that pedroza caught that tipped hail mary, because otherwise the score would’ve been 20-3.

I disagree that colt brennan spoiled us. He was an exceptional qb, for sure. but we’re used to at least competent qb play. aside from sean shroeder in the second half of last season, the norm chow era isn’t giving us that.

  123. Ahouse October 18, 2014 8:11 pm

after the 1st 2 offensive plays, I said UH would lose and was quickly and sharply rebuked by Mrs A-House and Midori7

did UH have their chances to win? absolutely! was the “holding” call on Baker on the 2nd half kick-off legit? depends on your perspective – from mine it was minor compared to the Aztec’s OL throughout the game – culminating in #19’s long run of 49 yards where #46 completely tackled N Phillips at the LOS

technically, UH lost when Chow and his OC crafted their offensive game plan – the offensive schemes reduced the chance of a win

BTW, what good is a 6′ 4″ WR who never touches the ball? did anyone see A. Baker touch the ball?

I constantly read on this blog during spring and fall practices how strong Woosley’s arm is – Really??? you fooled me!!!!!!!!!

OK, count me in for a change of HC as soon as possible.

That wasn’t Pedroza that caught the lucky pass that was kemp… But anyways on the holding calls I’m not being bias at all… I’m a realist… If they called that hold on the kickoff they(refs) need to call a fair game because there was a lot of holding calls that wasn’t call on SDSU….

About the kickoff return it would have been a huge swing of momentum if they didn’t call a hold. And honestly you and I will never know if it would have made a difference or not. So stop kidding yourself for seeing the future that you know what will happen before it happens…. Question did you know UH was going to win vs Wyoming lasts week?? I bet my house you didn’t….

  125. Ahouse October 18, 2014 8:17 pm

has anyone noticed the lack of downfield blocking by UH WR? there is NO sustained block to keep the DBs away – what is the WR coach teaching during practices?

  126. 4-Prong October 18, 2014 8:23 pm

abunai: tell me more about these phantom blatant holding calls that weren’t called. aside from the announcer saying maybe twice “that might have been a little bit of a hold, there.”

so wait. you’re telling me “you and I will never know if [the touchdown call] would’ve made a difference or not” so i should stop kidding myself about seeing the future, but before then you said “i believe it would’ve made a difference?”

so question: why can you believe whatever you feel like but i can’t conclude after watching the EXACT same game you did, seeing the EXACT same inept offense that’s been going on for the entire season, that in the long run throughout the course of the game, it wouldn’t have made much of a difference because the things that UH needs to do to win (execute both offensively and defensively), they weren’t doing AT ALL? are you gifted with psychic powers that i’m not?

btw, i didn’t see UH winning the wyoming game. I don’t see what your point is.

  127. Abunai October 18, 2014 8:36 pm

    4-Prong

I said I believe it would have made a difference…. (Maybe) but we will never know… Read my post good… Key word “Maybe” but we will never know…

Watch the game again… And count them… I know two calls on third downs that was a hold but refs didn’t call.. Those two on third down could have been a difference maybe. Also I would like to point out that those two holding calls on third down they scored a TD on both…. So they might not have scored and maybe would’ve punted instead of scoring.

  128. JustAsking October 18, 2014 8:38 pm

Hail Mary TD catch by Kemp just made #9 on ESPN SportsCenter Top 10!
Hey, it is nice to see our Warriors get some positive national publicity.

  129. jmor56 October 18, 2014 8:39 pm

Saint Juste had 100+ yards rushing last game yet Lakalaka was in the majority of the time. I just don’t get it coach.

  130. 4-Prong October 18, 2014 8:57 pm

abunai: i see. so your issue is that i didn’t use the word “maybe, but we’ll never know.” quite the solipsist, i see. okay. so allow me to amend my statement. if you don’t mind, of course.

even if ewaliko’s td wasn’t called back, UH’s offense was so inept, it wouldn’t have really made a difference. maybe, but we’ll never know. however, my reasoning behind this conclusions, the only drive where UH actually came close to executing in its offense was the final drive of the first half, and that score was off a lucky tip on a hail mary. maybe, but we’ll never know. i do feel an ewaliko td at the start of the second half would’ve given momentum to UH, but momentum is something that’s not measurable. and there’s no reason to believe that the td would’ve all of a sudden made UH’s offense competent.

    maybe, but we’ll never know.

so that’s my reasoning behind my conclusion vs “I JUST BELIEEEEVE!” but hey. we’ll never know.

thank the football gods that quin (not pedroza) caught that tipped hail mary, because otherwise the score would’ve been 20-3. maybe but we’ll never know.

whether those two possible holds were actually blatant, idk. it’s in the eye of the beholder. but definitely, bigger picture, those two “blatant” holding calls that you think you saw probably woudln’t have made UH win the game. UH played poorly more or less in all phases of the game (except punting. because scott harding is magnificent doing that). but you know… we’ll never know.

  131. jeezy33 October 18, 2014 9:05 pm

Woolsey taking the blame for poor WR play and bad play calling. Ewaliko isn’t a natural receiver and shouldn’t be running go routes if he can’t make a play on the ball. We should be running Jets Sweeps, screens, and hitches to him.

  132. 4-Prong October 18, 2014 9:11 pm

jeezy: maybe, but we’ll never know.

  133. oneseason October 18, 2014 9:19 pm

Defense held SDSU to 20 points, despite 3 turnovers; the third UH turnover (a fumble) was at the very end of the game though.

    Q1: SDSU starts on SDSU14: 7 pts
    Q1: SDSU starts on UH47: 3 pts
    Q3: SDSU starts on SDSU8: 7 pts
    Q4: SDSU starts on SDSU33: 3 pts

What I’m saying is you can’t just say they lose. I mean if that’s the way you want to think then what happened last weekend? I know the offense is not working all that great but still you can’t just think negative and say we lose. Even though we were still in the game. It’s not like we getting blownout or something. I can see if we were down 35-7 at the half that kickoff TD might not matter but it was still only a one posession game.

Why do you still think Quin/Pedroza(same person) caught that lucky pass when it was Marcus Kemp who caught it??

  135. Abunai October 18, 2014 9:26 pm

    Jeezy
I agree with you on that…. He’s not a natural receiver…. He may get better in time…

  136. oneseason October 18, 2014 9:33 pm

When your team didn’t have a QB coach or a WR coach for the first two seasons, is it surprising that the passing game in the middle of season 3 is still a work in progress? When your team still doesn’t have an OC for the 3rd season in a row, is it surprising that offensive strategy and play calling continues to be a problem?

  137. 4-Prong October 18, 2014 9:47 pm

abunai: i understand what you’re saying. i KNOW that maybe the light turns on and woolsey and his receivers play like the second coming of colt brennan and company. or maybe the light just dies altogether and UH gets blown out.

what i’m saying is, the argument that maybe the ewaliko td which was called back (and rightfully so) would’ve sparked the team to a victory isn’t compelling to me for the reasons that i already listed above. i’m not saying that what i think is the end all and be all of the argument and i’m a football oracle that can tell you exactly how the game can play out. i’m saying that based on how UH has been playing all season, and the absolute ineptness of the UH offense this game, i don’t feel that in the bigger context, it would’ve caused UH to win this game.

it was still a one possession play off a b.s. hail mary and a bunch of sloppy play by SDSU (which they largely seemed to have cleaned up in the second half). it wasn’t a one possession game because UH was playing up and up, playing well, and executing their offense. At no point in the game would any reasonable observer stop and say “boy. UH can actually win this game.” why? I would argue that UH’s offense (and even defense, for the second half) showed nothing to make someone think that things would suddenly click off a special teams TD.

I do believe that ewaliko’s td (had it not been correctly called back) would’ve given UH momentum. i’m just not convinced that UH would all of a sudden started demolishing the SDSU defense.

we’re talking probabilities, statistics, and patterns, here.

so regarding your comment about the wyoming game: the wyoming game looks pretty much like an outlier right now. it happens. and this SDSU game, on the road, looks like regression to the mean.

btw, i have no idea why i keep thinking it’s quinn and pedroza instead of kemp. Maybe it’s because nobody in the UH receiving corps really did anything to distinguish themselves and stand out in my mind aside from scott harding and his magnificent ambidextrous punting feet.

  138. 4-Prong October 18, 2014 9:54 pm

btw, when i say wyoming seems to have been an outlier, i’m not necessarily saying that the win itself is an outlier (because wyoming isnt’ that great of a team and they were playing on the road), but i’m saying the offense’s performance and woolsey’s performance as an almost-competent quarterback seems to have been an outlier.

I’m assuming chow will still start him because who the hell else is he gonna start? mckenzie milton? but it just doesnt’ seem like the guy is making meaningful progression when the game starts. so i’m not expecting a very great performance by the offense next week against nevada either. and i’d be very surprised if they won.

  139. ArcumFortis October 18, 2014 10:04 pm

Come home Rolo…..we really, really need an OC.

Hindsight is 20-20 but looking back on coach Chow’s decision to let go of DC Dave Aranda and OC Rolo when coach Chow took the helm sure doesn’t seem wise. He seems to have corrected his DC error by hiring coach Clune. But our offensive strategy is just plain poor and very painful to watch. I don’t know if coach Chow just doesn’t have the time to devote to developing offensive strategy or if he does and he is no longer capable of doing it effectively. In either case it doesn’t matter and we need help. Coach Chow along with two inexperienced offensive coaches in their mid 20’s (QB’s and WR’s coaches) is a well proven failed strategy.

Unfortunately I like a lot of what coach Chow has brought to the program. But in his main area of game responsibility he continues to fail and seems stubbornly unwilling to change course.

At least if we persist with our “three up the middle and punt” offensive strategy we get to watch Scott Harding punt…..that’s always effective, entertaining and exciting. Much the way our offense should be.

  140. Abunai October 18, 2014 10:11 pm

    4-Prong

I understand how bad our offense is and I feel you on that it’s frustrating to watch. I’m not saying that the kick return wouldve sparked the offense to be like colt and co was. I’m not saying that at all. They just might get some production on offense.

Even with that lucky pass TD they were still just one possession away it was only 10-7. With that kick return it would’ve been 14-10. But that didn’t stick so it was still 10-7 which it is a one possession game.

Wyoming game I think the difference in that game was the use of DSJ. He had almost 17 carries 135 yards rushing in that game. This game 6 carries for 32 yards.

I agree on the WR…. We need someone to take charge and be that one go to guy. But lack of speed at that position is why no one can break away or separate themselves from one another. They are both possession WRs with no real speed or that break away speed/second gear.

  141. Abunai October 18, 2014 10:17 pm

Btw I wish we play Harding more on offense in the slot position.

  142. 4-Prong October 18, 2014 10:22 pm

abunai: i think the td would’ve given them some motivation. whether or not it would translate to sustained production that would lead to scoring and winning the game, i’m not sold on that. but on this point, we can agree to disagree.

also, i’m not sure that st juste would’ve torn up the SDSU defense the way he did wyoming either. It would be really nice to see competent qb play, and i was hoping with taylor graham, we could possibly see that.

    but then his foot happened.

arcumfortis: i don’t really fault chow for cleaning house and letting go aranda and rolo. new coach, new staff. he wanted to clean house and bring in his own people. that’s fine. i do fault him for pretty much everything else after that, though.

  143. Abunai October 18, 2014 10:41 pm

    4-Prong

Yes we can agree and disagree on that kick return.

DSJ I think he’s a better RB then Lakalaka speed wise and shiftiness also. I think that the change of pace at RB would’ve done some good. I would still start Lakalaka because of his hard running ahead of DSJ but I would’ve gave the ball to DSJ more also.

I know we agree on this one. And that is the QB play is terrible. I can see this offense work if we had a better QB play and better play calling.

  144. 4-Prong October 18, 2014 10:57 pm

i just don’t understand why we can’t get st juste in space more to wreak havoc. idk if it’s a schematic issue or if the deficiencies at quarterback prevent this from happening.

either way, both reasons would land squarely on chow. he either can’t recruit good quarterbacks, or more likely, him and his staff can’t develop the players they have on their team.

    Modern Football Laws:

Law #1: No QB = No Wins
    Law #2: See above

  146. Former UH Athlete October 18, 2014 11:22 pm

I understand the unwillingness to burn Reilly’s redshirt, but it’s now to the point that Chow is going to have to put Reilly in at QB. Better to put Reilly in now with half the season left. That’s enough games to find out if Reilly has potential. If he preserves his redshirt year this year, he’s likely to be stuck behind Wittek next year. Reilly needs to really lobby to Wynn and Chow to give him a chance to prove himself. If Reilly performs well enough to possibly permanently take over as starter, then Wittek has to step his game up to be able to start next year. That bodes well for UH no matter who starts next year.

Looking at it from a coach’s point of view, UH is still just 1-1 in MWC and the West division is so weak, UH still has a chance to win the division as the defense & Harding’s punting will give UH a shot in just about every game. With that viewpoint, Chow will likely continue starting IW as long as he can still stand on his own two feet.

My viewpoint is that Chow is going to have to realize he needs to make the change to try and save his job. At this point, I’d take a healthy, untested freshman over a banged up Woosley, who by the way hasn’t been good when healthy. Just by watching at Woosley play, I guess he’s barely at 60% health (to put a % on it). Now he can’t run in addition to his ongoing struggles with accuracy.

Chow has given Woosely way more leeway than any coach should. At this point, this feels like Rex Ryan sticking with Geno Smith (sorry Jets fans).

  147. st. anthony trojan October 18, 2014 11:23 pm

before coming here n looking at the score…i was on facebook..n was reading a comment by sumone there that said…’uh was embarrassing’…guess that told me was another loss….

after reading the comments… sort of tongue tied here…
but logic to me is…if a very good QB is not 100%…he can for the most part get ‘er done…if a mediocre QB is not 100%…he still maybe be effective…but when a QB is not rated that highly is not 100%….then the head coach…should be able to figure that out…even in this case ..if he was 100%…maybe still would not make much difference…

i am sure we can all say one thing about ‘coach’…he sure is loyal…n stick to his decisions….good or bad…for that i give him credit…even as most can see..his choice is not working…

FJ is being proven right..as games goes by…seems like more so each week… wish he was not so pernicious in his comments about coach…but he is entitled to his opinions n how he expresses them…

sad to say… can’t see them winning ne more games this season…but they did double there winnings so far this year…can only hope for the best…maybe BJ WILL FIND SUM ‘CASH’ N PAY PEOPLE TO GO N WATCH THEM PLAY…

  148. st. anthony trojan October 18, 2014 11:29 pm

Abunai…me agree you that one 100%…harding n ewaliko…should be on the field a lot more…very lot more…n if they are both ‘electric’ with their plays… we will not need a kicker…not so ?

  149. 4-Prong October 18, 2014 11:40 pm

“sad to say… can’t see them winning ne more games this season…but they did double there winnings so far this year…”

this is what UH football has become. When you say “double their wins this year,” we’re not talking about from 3 wins to 6 wins and bowl eligibility. or from 5 wins to 10 wins. We’re talking about so far going from 1 win to 2 wins, with one of those wins coming from an FCS team.

The norm chow era, a.k.a. the hindenburg.

  150. BigFan October 18, 2014 11:44 pm

Almost all the games have been competitive and most of the teams were of okay caliber. So, I don’t know how you can say you can’t see winning anymore games. It could happen but it sure is a pessimistic outlook. I can understand it considering the past but still….

  151. Markazulu October 18, 2014 11:52 pm

It gets harder to remain positive but I’ll keep trying. Just as long as they keep fighting. I also appreciate your toughness of a warrior mr Woolsey but maybe it would be wise for him to sit out. Riley redshirt would be a shame to waste but Woolsey risking his body is a bigger deal I.m.o

  152. Former UH Athlete October 18, 2014 11:53 pm

139… Rolo ain’t coming back to UH to be just an OC. I would guess he’d be interested should there be a HC opening in a couple years. I thought Rolo was a bit too inexperienced before becoming OC at UH, but I think his time under Chris Ault really helped him as a playcaller. As a QB developer, I’m not sold on him just yet. Fajardo is a good dual threat QB, but his efficiency hasn’t improved under Rolo other than Rolo’s 1st year at UNR. In fact, Fajardo’s efficiency is down 20 points or so from the last two seasons. I want to see Rolo manage the offense next year after Fajardo graduates. I fear UNR is in for a rough drop like Fresno and SJSU are going through this year after losing Carr and Foles respectively.

I expect UNR to drop somewhat next season, but if Rolo’s offense can at least maintain their production, then I think Rolo will have earned my blessing to go for UH’s eventual vacancy.

I don’t know how much Rolo is involved in recruiting now, but he wasn’t great in that area while at UH. If he does come back, he and Ben Jay must do a good job of retaining or hiring the coaches that are the better recruiters.

  153. Former UH Athlete October 19, 2014 12:16 am

My only comment about tonight’s loss was that both the OLine and DLine got their butts kicked in the trenches for the first time all year. The SDSU bigs really did a good job at the point of attack.

SDSU’s QB stinks, but UH couldn’t force him into mistakes.

  154. st. anthony trojan October 19, 2014 12:35 am

yea ‘big fan’.. maybe u can’t see it.. but it seems to me…n sure most on here would agree…the first 3 games were winnable.. n against pac-12..competition… but it seems like …they are playing the same as the competition they are facing n not above it..rice was the case…to me if they had ne kind of offense…they should be 2 td’s favorite for most of the remaining games…but as you say…being a ‘pessimist’ is hard to figure out i guess…. but 4 me it is being more a realist…

i value the ‘football knowledge’ as stated on here … by a few… like jeezy..a house..rainbow cliff.. al …n a few other…even FJ HAS HIS POINTS…can’t keep doing the same thing n expect different results…

we are one dimensional… can’t pass… so we are dead…the rest on our schedule will see that…n unless we can generate 30 to 35 points a game..wee are doomed…thew defense …while great..will start to take its toll…holding a team..ne team to 15 to 20 points a game..is very good in my book…but only if that same team is ‘offense minded’…which we are not..

  155. cocobean October 19, 2014 12:44 am

It was a hard game to watch. I don’t know who’s decision it was to go almost exclusively with Lakalaka but it was a bad one. I thought St. Juste would’ve been a good change of pace. He hits the holes quicker and can bounce it outside if there is none. I was surprised he didn’t start. In my opinion he would’ve put more pressure on SDSU’s defense and made play action more effective.

The offense had no rhythm. It seemed like SDSU’s defense was one step ahead of our play calling. They anticipated what we were going to do and for the most part stopped us. It didn’t look like we had them guessing on defense at all.
