Game day: Wyoming

This is what’s at stake:

paniolo

And this:

FullSizeRender

Three keys for UH:

> Score touchdowns: In a game of time possessions, opportunities are precious and few. (And, yes, I just had a flashback to the 1975 Mistletoe Ball’s final song, “Precious and Few.”)

> Benneton Fonua: For the past 29 games, people have been saying: “Play Benny!” Tonight, Fonua makes his first start (in place of injured inside linebacker Julian Gener). It will be a rough-and-tumble sort of game. Fonua is a rough-and-tumble sort of linebacker.

> Limit the “wins”: The experts say that a gain of 5 or more yards on first down is a “win.” The Cowboys average 6.10 yards on first down.

    Game Day Baby.

    Go Warriors!!!

  2. hilo-Warrior October 11, 2014 8:35 am

With Wyoming giving 6.10 yards per first down play. That is encouraging news for Lakalaka to get some space to get out and run. Then you match that with Saint-Juste’s speed could be a big night for Hawaii.

  3. Stephen Tsai October 11, 2014 8:36 am

    Hmmm.
Mathematically, if UH wins, it’s in first place.

  4. gobows October 11, 2014 8:37 am

Jason ross put the hole in the right field fence of the outer fence at murakami. He punched it after a homerun.

  5. Darren October 11, 2014 8:44 am

Quietly slipped in that Nelson expected to start at corner. Let’s go Warriors!

  6. Stephen Tsai October 11, 2014 8:44 am

    Hilo:
It’s the other way. Wyoming’s offense averages 6.1 yards on first down.

  7. hilo-Warrior October 11, 2014 8:46 am

Sorry misread it. Tsai do we know what we are giving on first down plays?

  8. Stephen Tsai October 11, 2014 8:55 am

    Hilo:
UH relinquishes an average of 5.41 yards on first down.

  9. $ October 11, 2014 9:15 am

Taylor made win tonight over the cowboys.

  10. Old School Dave October 11, 2014 9:21 am

    Go Benny, Go!! Go Warriors!!

  11. Wes'side Warrior October 11, 2014 9:25 am

    Morning, Gang!

Just win, Baby! Let’s go, Warriors!!!

  12. Wes'side Warrior October 11, 2014 9:26 am

    Hey… comment #11 on the 11th…

Things that make ME go, “Hmmm…”

    Have a great day, everyone!

  13. gigi-hawaii October 11, 2014 9:27 am

Sweet column by Ferd Lewis in today’s paper.
    I echo the sentiment.

  14. warriorfan2 October 11, 2014 9:27 am

    “GO WARRIORS”
Win one for the Skipper Been a rough week.
    Brighten his day

  15. gigi-hawaii October 11, 2014 9:29 am

Hubby mentioned that Richard Torres is the DC at Kaiser High.
    Amazing.

  16. Claud Sutcliffe October 11, 2014 9:43 am

    UH 21 – Wyoming 17
    Go Paniolo!
    Beat da cowboys!

  17. Old Diver October 11, 2014 9:50 am

Richard Torres volunteered his time last fall to help the Kaiser football team. Guess they liked what they saw from him.

  18. Andrew October 11, 2014 9:51 am

Awesome win by UNLV over Fresno State. Hopefully the rest of the west teams keep beating each other up

  19. Old Diver October 11, 2014 9:51 am

Benny looks like a disrupter on defense. Go Warriors.

  20. SteveM October 11, 2014 10:05 am

    Good game day everyone!

Hope UH touchdowns are not “Precious and Few” tonight.
    GO WARRIORS!

  21. Fei Jai October 11, 2014 10:09 am

After today, I will no longer read Ferds column. I don’t like puff pieces and puff piece writing for columnists. Ferd should collect some money from norm for the pr piece he did today.

Miss the objective, opinionated writing of the real Ferd.

Thought that is what columnists did.

  22. Fei Jai October 11, 2014 10:11 am

    S/b “from” instead of “for”

  23. Old School Dave October 11, 2014 10:40 am

UCLA – Oregon game: HC Jim Mora and DC Jeff Ulbrich going at it on the sidelines. Ulbrich threw down his headset after Mora snatch his notes out of Ulbrich’s hand.

  24. Old School Dave October 11, 2014 10:44 am

UCLA fans booing the Punahou kicker Fairburn after another missed FG attempt.

  25. islandman October 11, 2014 10:48 am

Wyoming uses a slow down offense with huddles, per Stephen, in contrast to other teams that use the hurry-up offense. They snap the ball every 29.2 seconds on average. What’s the time limit ? 40 seconds ?

  26. KdaGreat October 11, 2014 11:14 am

Is Lataimua back in the lineup?

  27. Former UH Athlete October 11, 2014 11:14 am

    Fresno lost to UNLV…. Hahaha

  28. ArcumFortis October 11, 2014 11:18 am

#21 FJ. Gosh I thought your appetite for hatred had been attenuated. I guess your vampirous need for blood has reemerged. I read nothing in Ferd’s column that suggested that coach Chow was doing a good job. I read only an acknowledgement of the character and dignity of a man having to live the drama of his life and grief in a very public way. I think coach Chow’s character is illuninated in such situations and in your post, so is your’s. Please let me be clear: I write this not as a challenge to your ongoing evaluation of coach Chow’s performance. Coach Chow’s performance has not acceptable and if it doesn’t change he should resign or be fired. But he is also a very public human being who has been severely challenged by life of late. You may think this is irrelevant and “puff” but I would suggest to you that football wins and losses are much more “puff” than the circumstances confronted by coach Chow.

  29. A-House October 11, 2014 11:26 am

    UH WR:

They are tall, but noted for their “speed”.

kinda reminds me of a Mississippi Valley State player drafted #1 by the 49ers many years ago – tho, not at tall – at best 6’2″ – ran the 40 in 4.6 seconds and he was considered too slow to be a WR by most teams

yet, this distinguished man has the most reception yards in NFL history

UH WR coach should look at how he was able to accomplish this by using his body to block out DBs on a stop and come back move or turn into the middle; took the slow pace then raced past the DBs; etc. How does the DB play a WR – back to the QB? front to the QB? back pedal watching who?

Yes, Jerry Rice was all of that

are the UH WRs unable to grasp these concepts or is the WR coach to inexperienced to learn/teach these concepts to UH slow WRers? or both?

  30. beans October 11, 2014 11:26 am

#28 You got it exactly right!
    Go Team Go!

  31. cocobean October 11, 2014 11:49 am

Fei..Fei…Fei. And you wonder why you always eat alone.

  32. Tiki808 October 11, 2014 12:37 pm

No guarantee Graham can win the game. Example, Notre Dame 35 and North Carolina 36. Offensive game going. Can this game mimic this? probably not.

  33. Wes'side Warrior October 11, 2014 12:42 pm

Hope we get a good crowd to cheer on our Warriors tonight.

I remember when Miami had good teams. This shot I saw earlier this morning makes me wonder…

    http://www.sbnation.com/lookit/2014/10/11/6962393/miami-hurricanes-football-attendance-cincinnati

Lucky they stay in one money conference.

  34. Tiki808 October 11, 2014 12:47 pm

Lakalaka RB, Keelen Ewaliko WR, Kemp WR, and Graham QB for offense for Hawai’i. Are they good enough? I’d give it to Farrington, but last I checked there were 6 players making it into the Polynesian Hall of Fame from Hawai’i. Are they that good? Probably not. Still with Pearl City Mustangs.

  35. Marleysdad October 11, 2014 1:09 pm

I think Tiki808 has had one too many concussions.

  36. Marleysdad October 11, 2014 1:10 pm

Maybe he went to Kalaheo & Pearl City.

  37. Candy October 11, 2014 1:59 pm

Good luck to whatever QB(s) plays and the rest of the team! Win together Warriors!

  38. Da Punchbowl Kid October 11, 2014 2:09 pm

    GO WARRIORS!!!

    PUNCH THE COWPOKES!!!

  39. markazulu October 11, 2014 2:09 pm

Heck of a finish for the TCU/Baylor game. 24 points unanswered in the 4th by Baylor.

  40. markazulu October 11, 2014 2:19 pm

Bama in danger going against Arkansas on ESPN.

  41. KdaGreat October 11, 2014 2:22 pm

So does anyone know if Lataimua is back?

  42. markazulu October 11, 2014 2:24 pm

    Who starts tonight Woolsey/Graham

  43. KdaGreat October 11, 2014 2:28 pm

I think whoever is covering and reporting on this teams behalf should keep us mainlanders informed on past injured that may be back or are still out. Iosefa, Tilumaseali’i, Lataimua and others this may apply to. Or do we just have to wait until game time.

  44. st. anthony trojan October 11, 2014 2:37 pm

fifty-one sounds good to me… being very optimistic here..
    no vampires here.

    UH 51..COWBOYS 14

  45. whitey October 11, 2014 2:42 pm

    Go Rainbow Warriors!!!!!

  46. st. anthony trojan October 11, 2014 3:06 pm

KDA great.. me second that motion..be nice in a lowly marketing manager up there at UHAD to post regular on here..to keep us ‘ALL AWAY’ fans..on the goings on with the injury report..or one of them ‘busy’ media types up there..

SUBJECT LINE… ‘news n discounts’… to lazy just to put out a special e-mail ..game day up date etc…n mine for e mail addresses etc..be interesting to see the clicks n how many open their mail…

sum one up there should go to the survey that shows.. what subject line gets the most hits..but if u don’t care….guess it does not matter..like me said before.. amazon n e bay addresses me by name..is a little more personal… n they must send out millions of e mail a day…

wonder if ne one up there ‘bleeds green’ or just there to get a check……

  47. Turfwar October 11, 2014 3:07 pm

Westside I was shocked to see the empty stadium in today’s broadcast. It didn’t look much better early in the second half and Miami was winning!

  48. Turfwar October 11, 2014 3:14 pm

#21 Fei Jai some things have nothing to do with sports. Your heart is dark. Go find something that makes you happy. It’s not here. Life’s too short.

  49. Tiki808 October 11, 2014 3:41 pm

I say Graham has a hard time tonight. Notre Dame won over North Carolina. 50-36. Lakalaka can’t run. The edge goes to Wyoming on offense. I’ll have to go with Wyoming 45 and Hawai’i 10 final score prediction tonight. Maybe? 1420 ESPN AM sports

  50. 4-Prong October 11, 2014 3:47 pm

graham will probably struggle. it’s his first start in a while. but hopefully there’s progression.

  51. Tiki808 October 11, 2014 3:51 pm

I still say you can’t get arrested for picking the wrong team or if you didn’t go to Pearl City High School and get a diploma, but on the internet.

  52. Marleysdad October 11, 2014 3:53 pm

Anyone know if the game is streaming? In Vegas.

  53. Tom October 11, 2014 3:59 pm

    GOOD EVENING, HAWAII!

It is almost 9:00pm here. Post the scoring = and GO RAINBOW WARRIORS!

  54. KdaGreat October 11, 2014 4:12 pm

The game is streaming on the Mountain west network from what I see. Not sure it matters if your in NY or Vegas.

  55. Tofuzuke October 11, 2014 4:17 pm

    Play hard Warriors!!

  56. Marleysdad October 11, 2014 4:40 pm

54, kdaGreat, I’m at the stadium. It’s for some friends. Thanks!

  57. Tiki808 October 11, 2014 4:43 pm

Remember Who was Michael Carter? If you see him at the games, point him out or put him on the blog. Holiday Bowl 1992 and played with Ma’a Tanuvasa. They left him off the 6 pack, Polynesian hall of fame. Why? Denver Broncos not a good enough team or didnt’ know him.

  58. Ipu Man October 11, 2014 4:52 pm

It is beddy bed time in Wyoming pretty soon.
    Sleep. Sleep. Sleep.

  59. Alnbama October 11, 2014 5:48 pm

The game should be streaming on campus insiders soon

  60. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 11, 2014 5:56 pm

I dunno about anyone else but that was one of the best National Anthem performance I’ve seen in a while.

  61. mo808 October 11, 2014 6:17 pm

IWWTHE, I wholeheartedly agree! Those ladies did it justice!

  62. mo808 October 11, 2014 6:17 pm

  73. Bryson October 11, 2014 6:26 pm

Bright spot is Lakalaka really running hard tonight…

  74. Bryson October 11, 2014 6:28 pm

And Lakalaka look like he injured his hand on the last play…

  75. MattO October 11, 2014 6:30 pm

running hard to the outside…such a beautiful sight

  76. Bryson October 11, 2014 6:31 pm

Wyoming is stacking the box on 1st and 2nd down…by switching up the cadence I didn’t mean run 3 times in a row….Field Goal I’ll Take It

  77. Bryson October 11, 2014 6:33 pm

I know the stadium is empty cause I have no trouble posting…usually I can’t even get through…

  78. Bryson October 11, 2014 6:33 pm

Defense needs to step up and make a stop or cause a turnover

  79. WarriorFan October 11, 2014 6:33 pm

still settling for FG’s… A draw play on 3rd down…SMH

  80. MattO October 11, 2014 6:34 pm

  81. Bryson October 11, 2014 6:38 pm

  87. WarriorFan October 11, 2014 6:44 pm

  125. Bryson October 11, 2014 8:09 pm

Finally we mix it up with the play calling and we kept the defense honest on that drive…it’s about time hopefully they continue to do that on offense

  126. mattO October 11, 2014 8:09 pm

Btw, that kid should be ejected – targeting helmet to helmet on a defenseless receiver.

  127. Bryson October 11, 2014 8:11 pm

Matt – I Agree he didn’t even make an attempt to look for the ball….but that hitch and go was a thing of beauty

  128. mattO October 11, 2014 8:14 pm

Bryson – loved that play call and the one after. Finally some variety!

  165. Tiki808 October 11, 2014 9:43 pm

38 Hawai’i and Wyoming 28 final. 1-0 MWC Hawai’i (2-5 overall) 6th win in 3 years for Norm Chow. Yes! Congrats!

  166. mo808 October 11, 2014 9:44 pm

That was a hard game to watch especially in the third quarter. I am so glad the guys kept fighting and pulled out the WIN! Thank you, Coaches and Players! With all the injuries you folks persisted and everyone stepped up! Mahalo!

  167. Tiki808 October 11, 2014 9:44 pm

2-4 overall for Hawai’i correction. Congrats! Sorry. MWC 1-0

  168. Tiki808 October 11, 2014 9:48 pm

Taylor Graham needs to improve. Ikaika Woolsey did the trick. It just goes to show you that Notre Dame produces good offense every year. But, if UH can connect on its receivers, they too produces NFL stars. One more for the 6 pack. Keep adding them up.

  169. Wes'side Warrior October 11, 2014 9:49 pm

Yeah, Baby! Gonna savor this one… especially after all of the mistakes we kept making. Was on the road the whole 4th quarter… yelling at the dashboard while at stop lights… people looking at me weird! Hahaha! Loved saying… “We just scored one touchdown! We winning!!!”

Heal up, wounded Warriors! Beau Reilly better be ready!

Gratz, Warriors, on pulling this one out! Keep it going!

  170. Tiki808 October 11, 2014 9:52 pm

@San Diego State Aztecs next week. 1st place. Keep running. Working!

  171. st. anthony trojan October 11, 2014 10:07 pm

well wonder what the score be without those fumbles… n if graham stayed in..
but good for ikaika.. maybe he pick up sum much needed confidence…

    me was hoping for a 51…. 12 points short…

  172. Da Punchbowl Kid October 11, 2014 10:08 pm

Prayers for quick healing to all injured Warriors – depth was key tonight. Really nice to see the way Graham spread the offense around in the early going. Woolsey did a great job stepping up, along with St. Juste. Really loved the fire in the eyes of players and staff.

  173. Konaboy October 11, 2014 10:16 pm

Super stoked on the solid win. Hopefully the light will stay on for Woosely, best performance to date. If the offense can continue to step it up, we are going to the Hawaii bowl. The D is great this year.

  174. tom-warriornation October 11, 2014 10:22 pm

I can still get tickets for SDSU if anyone wants to join our 330+ Hawaii fans–just found out I can email these tix since it is too late for mailing. $18 each. Text me at: 415-324-0585.

  175. J October 11, 2014 10:32 pm

    Tom-warriornation,

I’ll know tomorrow if I’m going to be in town for the game in San Diego.

    Thanks for the update.

  176. pollypicador October 11, 2014 10:36 pm

    Great win. Congratulations team.

TG’s leadership was key. Saw him on the sideline getting all the units fired up. Players need to have this mean streak. Others need to step up their leadership.
When the team got down at the half it was great to see the players and coaches overcome adversity and fight back.

IW did well throwing the ball, 8-9. Great.

St. J had a good game running the ball. Career day, 100 some yard.

Defense caused Wyoming 9 (?) three in outs in the second half. This was the difference maker in Hawaii winning the game.

Savior this win. Even for the critics. I do. The remainder of Saturday night feels better (as opposed to the opposite).

Omelet Monday for the players, which doesn’t come very often-enjoy. The players deserve it. Getting this win puts a good taste in the players, which I hope makes them more hungry for more wins.

  177. Z October 11, 2014 10:39 pm

Good to see Vele getting more pt tonight.

  178. Andrew October 11, 2014 10:43 pm

Awesome win for the team. I really feel for Graham though. His senior year and then getting injured like that must be really tough. He played pretty well in the first half though. Go Warriors and beat the Aztecs

  179. jeezy33 October 11, 2014 10:49 pm

Nice win tonight… St Juste def showed up to play. Props to Woolsey filling in for Graham in 2nd half. Maybe the benching lit a fire in him. Very efficient. Trayvon was a beast tonight…

No complaints from me tonight… I won’t even say anything about the 1st quarter 🙂

  180. st. anthony trojan October 11, 2014 10:53 pm

jeezy33… but their were sum short commings…(on offensive side) n those should be pointed out..so the ‘boys’ n coach play calling can get better…

  181. 808 October 11, 2014 11:02 pm

Great win! Healing prayers to all the injured Warriors. 1 – 0 in the MWC!

  182. A-joe October 11, 2014 11:03 pm

Despite spotting all of Wyo’s points, our men demonstrated their ability to come together and overcome adversity. Proud of them all.

Omlets are on the menu. Let the feast begin. You deserve it, men. Job we’ll done…

  183. ArcumFortis October 11, 2014 11:06 pm

I found it hard to believe we were going to win until Trayvon’s last interception. We have been close so many times before and somehow found a way to lose. Arkansas and their hapless SEC record seems similar. Arkansas should have beaten Alabama today but just couldn’t perform when the game was on the line. Today we did preform when it counted. Don’t know what happened to IW but he had a command of the offense and seemed to have Wyoming off balance the whole second half. Good for him. He deserves some payoff for his hard work. It felt good to be in the stadium tonight and see smiling faces. Winning is a mindset. I hope we can start to develop this mindset. I wish were home next week as our road record is truly awful. But if we can get a win on the road we might really start to believe. I feel great for the players. They put in so much effort. At least for tonight I hope they can feel that it is all worthwhile.

  184. cocobean October 11, 2014 11:20 pm

I’m happy the team came through for their coach. They ran a more diverse offense tonight with a lot of different formations. They included the RB, H back and TE in the passing game.

I was at the game thinking Wyoming’s defense was ripe for Woolsey to fake the handoff and take off running. Then it dawned on me it would be a disaster if Woolsey got hurt while running. Beau would be the next man up. I wouldn’t count on seeing Woolsey running too often from here on out.

I’m dying to see the replay to check the formations and personnel groupings.

  185. islandman October 11, 2014 11:31 pm

There was Graham on the internet stream singing the Alma Mater, i think, after the game, along with the others.

  186. 99club October 12, 2014 3:56 am

Great win for the Warriors after two key offensive starters go out. Talk about getting each other’s back:

    From Jason Kaneshiro’s article:
“UH’s five touchdowns were scored by players who hadn’t reached the end zone in a Hawaii uniform prior to Saturday night, with the wide receiver corps accounting for four.”

Now that’s a TEAM. My recommendation is the western omelet. 🙂

  187. Shoko October 12, 2014 4:16 am

Didn’t get to watch the game but pleasantly surprised the Warriors got the win.

Looks like the light came on in Woolsey. Hopefully it carries into the rest of the season. Need consistency at that position.

DSJ was a beast last night! Glad he got the opportunity to make an impact and was able to step up. Averaging 8 yards per carry? Damn!

Kudos to the defense in the second half to give the offense a chance to come together.

    Huge and much needed win!

  188. fshnpoi October 12, 2014 4:17 am

excellent win for our warriors, i know they’ll savor this one for a long time. happy for the coaches too. ikaika may finally be seeing that light at the end of the tunnel, hopefully he’ll take this game and continue moving this team forward.
    imua warrior’s!

  189. Maddog50 October 12, 2014 4:39 am

Finally, as ugly as it got in the first half and the turnovers in the 2nd. The refs are terrible…..again!!!! The MW stream was so slow listened to it on the radio…..now they have to find enough healthy bodies to compete on the road….something tells me there is something good that comes out of this besides the win. Special teams were OK….KO team needs to tighten it up. OL did its job and the D….the opponents will look at the 2nd half defensive stats and take notice….imagine a game like yesterday with no turnovers by us that result in scores and completed drives…..it is not a game….I will gladly take it as I sat in the dark till 2:30 am to listen to Bobby Curran—–I am one dedicated Warrior backer–Go Warriors!!!!

  190. 3-Prong October 12, 2014 5:30 am

…still basking in the glow of victory.

Offensive and defensive lines were the difference. Afusia at guard because of his hand was a good move. QBs were relatively comfortable all night. Norm’s offense works when the run is effective. Opens the pass and the occasional misdirection (Ewaliko).

  191. tom October 12, 2014 6:23 am

    GOOD MORNING, HAWAII!

    Great win! Thanks for posting!

  194. pollypicador October 12, 2014 6:48 am

    Some trends that were broken.

Behind After 1st Quarter –0-16 UH was behind 14-3
Behind At Halftime — 0-17 UH was behind 21-10
Behind After 3rd Quarter –0-21 UH was behind 28-24
Allowing 21 points or more– 2-23 UH allowed 28
In October– 0-7 First win for Chow in the month of October

  195. oneseason October 12, 2014 6:57 am

At 0-14, I thought we would leave the stadium after halftime. By then end of the first half, I thought we would see a repeat of the Rice ending. After Graham came out and was replaced by Woolsey, it seemed that the offensive play calling became aggressive and could lead to a win. If this style is maintained, Aloha Stadium could return to an exciting place to watch college football.

  196. kawika49 October 12, 2014 6:58 am

    Pomai:
    UH 24 SDSU 10
Please no postem no like Bachi em.

  197. Markazulu October 12, 2014 7:31 am

Glad to see UH finally try to test the outside instead of running up the gut.

  198. Shoko October 12, 2014 7:58 am

I’m thinking the Tampa 2 defense that Wyoming runs might not be effective at this level. Nevada ran that same defense last year and was coached by Bohl’s former defensive coordinator a few years back when they won the championship. Nevada’s Run D ended up being the worse in the conference and near bottom in the nation. It’s a bit surprising that Wyoming was able to win against run-heavy Air Force offense this year.

  199. oneseason October 12, 2014 8:29 am

Hope they show the final play of the half again. I didn’t see how Graham’s foot got injured after the first viewing.
