Warriors: Captain Carter
The Rainbow Warriors opened the 1991 season with a new quarterback and plenty of questions.
But then Michael Carter, in his debut as the Warriors’ triple-option quarterback, rushed for 214 yards in a road game against Wyoming.
In that game, Carter suffered a broken rib, a painful injury that caused him to grimace with every hit. The thing was, in that offense, the quarterback was hit nearly every play. Carter played with extra padding and grit the rest of the season. Few knew about the condition until offensive coordinator Paul Johnson let it slip during prep interviews with national television producers ahead of the season-finale against Notre Dame.
In that game, the rib injury did not prevent Carter from absorbing a big hit — to his ribs — on a late touchdown run. The Warriors lost to Notre Dame, 48-42, but that paved the way for the next season, when the Warriors would go 11-2 and win the Holiday Bowl. Carter was named the bowl’s MVP for offense.
Football life comes full circle. For Saturday’s game against Wyoming, Carter will be the Warriors’ honorary captain.
Carter, like his 1992 teammates and coaches, deserves a place in another circle — UH’s Circle of Honor. That team was special. Carter was special.

You know what words that have been stuck in my memory for the last 20 hours-Chow’s statement in yesterday’s blog, “The position is being evaluated (in regards to his QB).” Those words have been swirling around in my head and giving me a mean headache. Chow should show some mercy on how he thinks because it has an effect on the ones that bear listening to him.
My question:
What in Chow’s fantasy world needs further evaluating in regards of watching his starting QB struggle miserable thru the past 5 games?
You mean to tell me he doesn’t see the picture, and he needs more time-hence yesterday’s statement? Silly.
Go back to fall camp. Chow makes a statement “I’m in no hurry to pick a starting QB.” Then on the eve of the first real live scrimmage (and basically catching everyone by surprise at the suddenness of his decision) he announces to the media that Woolsey is going to be his starting QB. This comes without giving a good look at his other QB’s in live action…in other words this comes without Chow really crossing all his t’s and dotting of i’s. Yet now he wants to meticulously cross his all his t’s and dotting of i’s when he said yesterday that the position needs further evaluation. Come on man, Chow, wake up.
Chow’s decision doesn’t need further evaluating. Woolsey is as just as bad as he is in games (there is no other way of putting this) as he is in practice. He’s also dead last in the rankings of D-1 QB’s. Chow should see this picture. It doesn’t need squinting, a second glance, or a blink of an eye that maybe in this (fantasy) picture that Chow sees is that Woolsey might surprise (he isn’t). What it needs is Chow to start acting like a head coach and show some leadership san the narrow mindness.
I totally agree that Michael Carter and the 1992 team coached by Bob Wagner was special. Plus, I think that Michael Carter was UH’s best quarterback ever.

5. Agree. Norm already messed up on evaluating his Qbs at the end of last season when he didn’t bring in any immediate help. He went all in with Woolsey and it back fired like I stated it would all recruiting season last spring.
Now it shouldn’t be about evaluating at this point in season. It Should be about next man up. Woolsey got his change, it didn’t workout, and it’s time to move on. Teammates need to have confidence in their qb.. Maybe graham lights a spark when lights go up on Saturday. Maybe not. But someone new deserves a shot regardless of practice evaluation.. because we’ve heard for way too long on how well we’ve practiced. Time to find a gamer

5. 9. My guess is that the decision to start Graham has been made. But why make it easy for your opponents to prepare. TG and IW bring very different styles to the table. Best to make Wyoming have to prepare for both.

Wagner was one of the first coaches in college football to run a spread offense– an innovator who brought in an unknown Paul Johnson to run his spread option attack using a veer type option attack in a spread formation he learned after spending a month with Mouse Davis– double slots and no tight end. At Hawaii he used the triple option and combined it with the pass. He became the first Hawaii coach to use run and shoot pass plays– using a passing QB in Garrett Gabriel to get our fist win over BYU in a blowout.

If the criterions of naming your QB is held back for strategic reasons then why did Chow act like a racehorse in fall camp and name Woolsey early on (around the 10th)…when if he held off he would have gave Washington having to prepare for all three of the QB’s plus he would have (like a said) given all his QB’s a fair shot of winning the starting job (Chow didn’t).
15. I understand where u coming from. But I don’t think game plan changes a lot. I think video is out that you can press our WRs and play in the box to stop the run. Rice runs a cover 4 supposedly so that would be a huge advantage to our offense. One where Woolsey probably gives us a better chance to win if we run the ball and call more qb keepers… but looking long term, I still want qb change… I need to see someone that can compete 60 % of passes and not stare down wrs while not seeing wide open guys.
Remembering the Holiday Bowl
I watched that game from the Columbia Inn on Kapiolani. The restaurant was packed and resembled a stadium atmosphere with the patrons cheering the team on. It was fun (beer and food flowed and it tasted better as the team won), memorable and one of the best wins for the program. People were happy, proud and rewarded with good play from the players and good coaching. Carter was the man. And the bartender (Flo) was a woman but she, too, so to speak, was the man. Good times.
17, 18. I am not trying to defend coach Chow’s quarterback selection process. If he has been correct and IW is the best we have…..then we are in deep Kim Chee. And the fault then lies not in selecting the best we have but in very poor recruiting. I do think that having to prepare for Russell Wilson is different from preparing for Peyton Manning. And please know the obvious: I am not drawing analogies between those QB’s and ours in terms of talent, just in style.
But I do agree that of you can covers our receivers with a minimum amount of defensive manpower then the quarterbacks style doesn’t matter as much.
I think the suspense of naming a quarterback can be a good thing in terms of fan anticipation and a strategic stand point. I really have no problem if Chow doesn’t make the announcement until game day. Have a feeling Graham gets the start and Woolsey is used on situational plays like last season.

I remember the triple option years…some good times.
I also remember that ND game. Being Catholic, I’ve been an ND fan, and BC fan so to speak unless their playing ND, all my life. I remember it was a little difficult for me during that ND game in 91 because I really didn’t care who won… Sure, I was pulling for UH but many of my classmates were attending ND and I was supposed to go there as well but couldn’t due to financial situations….Great game though…I remember Lou Holtz squeezing butt…LOL

Was that ND game the last one of the season that year? I have splotchy memories of that time period, although granted I was only 5 then…
Just remember that players perform differently under the lights vs in practice. IW according to media following closely, has looked “good” in practice. Practice is where you win the starting job & playing time. He’s been the best practice player at QB, therefore, he kept getting the start.
Just like golf, many of the driving range stallions out there can’t take their game to the golf course. Until her US Open breakthrough, Michelle Wie was the great in rounds 1-3, but faltered numerous times in the final round under pressure. When she wasn’t in contention, she usually lit it up the final round to backdoor a Top 5 finish. Same can be said for Ricky Fowler… Tons of talent, very good player, has been a front runner at all the majors this year, but can’t close the show on Sunday when the pressure is on.
IW is fitting into that mold. It’s something a coach can’t really control probably because he doesn’t understand the what goes on between the ears of his QB under pressure. In game, IW probably doesn’t realize how long he’s staring down his target. What seems like a .5 second to him is actually 2 seconds real time. Also, he doesn’t have a good pocket presence. Usually when we talk about poor pocket presence, it’s feeling where pressure is coming from and moving around appropriately, With IW, his biggest issue is that he doesn’t seem aware of when he HAS lots of time to throw. He gets happy feet with no pressure around him.
To me, I think IW needs a sports psychologist. All the great film study and practice drills won’t fix his in-game mental breakdowns.

Yes! Michael Carter… I’ve said it before… one of my favorite Rainbows of all time… just because of the way he played. He’d get nailed every play, and get up and keep it going. His determination alone is inspiration to all who followed. Never give up.

Maybe the reality that this is Graham’s last chance for collegiate football will set in and he’ll just go for it and start to really pull the trigger rather than hesitate as he has in the past. I think if he really takes the whole “go for broke” mentality he can really show us what he’s capable of doing.

Yikes. Maybe time to turn UH Manoa into a private institution? There’s no hope that a government controlled school (DOE) can turn around the budget. Too much politics, policy, bureaucracy, inefficiencies, and incompetency. UH Athletics will always suffer at the hands of upper campus.
At the end of the day sometimes you need to change things just because the things you are doing are not working. It would be a relief for me to see TG start and my hope for the young man is that he does well. He committed to coming here and has put in his time. Would I be shocked if his play was not better than IW’s? No. I would be disappointed for him and for us but I do believe IW won the job because of his skill set and performance in practice. As FUHA suggests, playing in the game is a different thing. Maybe TG will simply have more poise and presence that allows for more success come game time. But I guess we just wait and see.
33.. The QB just has to play loose. IW & TG can both spin the ball. They just have to relax and let it fly.
Another thought is that when tension rises, so does grip pressure on the ball. Gripping too tightly will lead to an inconsistent release, which makes it harder to throw accurately, both lateral direction and trajectory.
Try throwing a football with a normal grip vs a death-grip and you’ll see what I’m talking about.
I’m willing to bet that if you tracked IW’s grip pressure on the ball in-game it’ll be off the charts vs what his grip pressure is during practice.

Agreed. I think with Woolsey, it’s a matter of when everything is going to click with him. He’s young so he has a lot of time left. I think when it does click for him, he will be a very dangerous QB. Unfortunately for him though, he will have Wittek, Zawhlen, and Riley to compete with next year so its definitely no gimme.

It really do not matter who he start as quarterback. When 70% of your plays are running up the middle: and running the same player 95% of the time other team’s d/c just need to figure out how to stop the run and they stop 70% of our offense. Don’t take a rocket scientist to figure that out.

Just don’t think Chow or the team is afforded the time to wait for Ikaika’s light to turn on. The team is much better but not good enough to overcome the deficiencies at QB. Time to make a change… GO BOWS!!!

I wasn’t referring to this season. I know and agree it’s time for someone else to get a chance. I think though watching from the sideline may benefit Woolsey more in the long run.
What I find baffling is why Chow is so hesitant putting Graham in the game when Woolsey was struggling.
I remember in Chow’s first year, how he commended Schroeder on his work ethic based on his dedication by coming in his own time to study the playbook and watching game film. Makes me wonder if its a matter of work ethic that causes Chow to hesitate to put Graham in the game. I dunno.

possibly. Coach could have also been comparing the situations with Woolsey and Schroeder and maybe seen similarities between the two. Schroeder struggled when he first started here and then all of a sudden the light just came on and that’s when he started to really light the offense on fire (of course Joey coming back from injury helped as well). Maybe coach was thinking the same would happen with Woolsey and he was waiting for it. However, we all know that it hasn’t happened yet and Coach is finally ready to maybe make a switch.

I think Ikaika’s lack of success partially falls on the play calling I noticed against Rice when we ran read option plays we were able to move the ball with ease… When he had to drop back and pass looked like he had trouble seeing the field

#46: A lot of that money is earmarked for certain departments (e.g. $40 million of that money is for the marine science department due to a generous donation this year). I believe that a very small amount of the donations go directly towards the general fund versus a department/school like Shidler, JABSOM, Engineering, etc. When I donated money this year, it went to a specific school and not to the general fund.
#48: That’s why I believe that Woolsey is more of an option quarterback. If Chow really wanted to cater to Woolsey’s strengths, he would have implemented a lot more option plays that don’t involve throwing the ball as much due to Woolsey’s questionable passing ability in game situations. Michael Carter was the best option Quarterback that UH has ever had, but passing wasn’t his strength. His ability to run the ball was what made that UH team that went to the Holiday Bowl one of the best in recent memory. Passing wasn’t exactly Carter’s strength, but he was more accurate than Woolsey in game situations.

48. At some point UH has to throw the ball effectively. The read-option was a good wrinkle but defenses will catch up and make their adjustments.

I agree that the QB’s issues are mental. That is why I recommended Merv Lopes’ use of meditation and visualization techniques that gave Chaminade a national stage.
Many times we blame players using the explanation that their light bulb has not turned on yet. Same can be said for the coaches.

We seem to do a decent job in the first half, then fall apart most times in the second half. Maybe we need to different game plans… start as usual, then come out with an option-oriented plan after the half.

That’s why I said play calling was partially to blame because it hasn’t put opposing defenses in a position to play honest…DC’s know we run the ball 2-3 times in a row and force ourselves into a 3rd down passing situation… Last game against Rice when we ran the read option we had success but then went back to our old run, run, pass offense which made us ineffective I believe had we continued to run those read options it would have allowed us to continue to move the ball and open up those inside runs as well as bootlegs

37. You do realize he’s 21 and a 4th year sophomore right? In college, it usually clicks by year 2, and no later than year 3. If not then you are what you are..
Hawaii lost its last game in 1997 to Notre Dame 22-23. The surprise for me was to learn the head coach that year was Fred von Appen. The other season ending game with ND was in 1991 when the Bows lost 42-48. This was a reminder for me that we were competitive with big-time schools. The Bows opened the 1997 season with a win over Minnesota 17-3 at Aloha Stadium. The program will regain this competitiveness with our support. Go Bows!!!
I think Beau Reilly should get a shot and get more reps in practice. Who knows if he’s a “gamer” unless you put him in. Learn by baptism. There are a number of redshirt and true freshman QBs playing major roles. Having “good practices” are nice, but you have to do it in the games. I also disagree that the non-conference schedule and the games (1-4) doesn’t matter. Every game counts, one at a time, a chance to get better and improve and win a game, a win that counts towards bowl eligible. Tell that to Jerrol Garcia-Williams who got hurt and is out for the season. Tell that to Joey Iosefa who got hurt is rehabbing trying to get back to play. Tell Tevita Lataimua who has missed most of the non-conference schedule. They put their soul into it and bleed green. It does matter. I really think Chow is too old for this. He might be a good offensive coordinator, but I’m not convinced that he is a good recruiter of QBs. He didn’t recruit Philip Rivers, he didn’t recruit Matt Leinert, he didn’t recruit Carson Palmer, he didn’t recruit Jim McMahon, he didn’t recruit Mark Wilson, he didn’t recruit Steve Young. Who did he recruit for the QB position? Did he recruit Brian Johnson at Utah?

Bryson — it’s a lot like playing a slot machine–sometimes you score, most times not.
I still believe in the “I’m gonna do it until they stop me” philosophy, the problem is, coach has to realize when they are stopped…and realize it quick.
SteveM, it’s more like dating, if you good you score, if not then you so out of luck.
Sometimes the woman gets left with the guy with the man-boobs, sometimes the guy gets left with the sloppy seconds…such is life.
The one thing Chow’s QBs have lacked is confidence. When Schroeder found his he went from a passed over 2nd stringer to an appearance in a college all star game. All our past “good” QBs had that quality. Took Rolo awhile to get his while Colt had enough for two.
I find Gaetano DeMattei’s quote in this mornings paper interesting. He didn’t address confidence but he exhibited confidence in his ability. He said something like, ” once you start understanding the concepts you can just react. When you get comfortable and it’s your second nature that’s when you can really start to play.” I think that’s the lightbulb moment everyone is waiting for in our QBs.
Derek: the “only conference play matters” is the last bastion of hope for chow apologists. I’ve never really heard people say “only the conference matters” except in sports where conference play actually DOES matter: basketball, volleyball, baseball, etc. And that’s only because of seeding for a post-season tournament and a possible berth into the NCAA tournament.
Of course you want to win your conference for football, but for a school like UH, where the goal is just to go 6-6 or 7-6 and make the Hawaii bowl, EVERY win counts. And if you want to build a program that can hang with the big boys, the non conference schedule is just as important, if not more so.
it just goes to show how low standards have fallen since norm chow took over.
DeMattei’s said as much during the post practice yesterday. Seems to be a smart kid and likable.
Brian Johnson’s playing days were before Chow got to Utah. Although, I think he was a GA assisting quarterbacks under Chow. Now that Johnson’s at Miss State as a quarterback coach, looks like he doing a good job with developing their quarterback, Dak Prescott.

Maybe I’m a skeptic, but I’m not buying the $31 million deficit.
So who’s to gain from putting out that number?
Let’s look at what’s been happening. There’s a plan in place to raise tuition by 7 percent every year. Thing is, that’s not a 7 percent from the original. Say, tuition is $100 for year one. For the second year, it’s $107. Now for the third year, most people think you add another $7 to the $100. But no, you add the 7 percent to the $107. And …. well, you get the picture. That’s a lot of money. And that’s why UH says, don’t worry about the extra, you can always get a loan or financial aid.
But I digress.
Lawmakers now want to slow the increases; maybe eliminate them.
So now, all of a sudden, there’s a $31 million deficit.
Or is there?
For one thing, the facilities, as old as they are, are already in place. The cost then is in maintenance, salaries and benefits, right?
I’m not sure about the rest of you, but if I’m $1 short on my HECO bill, two months from now, I’m sitting in the dark.
If you’re $31 million in the hole, the IRS has a foreclosure sign on the Bachman Hall lawn.
Somebody, obviously, covered the deficit.
And, again, is it a deficit or a shortfall in revenue projection? If it’s the latter, then the budget people should be put in timeout.
And that’s my rant for today.

Some of the superstars on that Holiday Bowl 1992 team, Travis Sims and Jason Elam, were roommates at one time at my dorm at Hale Aloha Ilima. I look forward to watching the pregame festivities on Saturday and seeing Carter at midfield.
Omaha “Hurry” “Hurry”. Just Sling It. UH’s pass attempts have gone down since the beginning of the season. 42,50, 30, 24, 27… I think there is a correlation with pass attempts to passing yardage. Mike Leach (funny was at BYU and watched Chow innovate the passing game) believes in wide offensive line splits and pass attempts. WSU QB Halliday has thrown 56, 57, 62, 63, 61 and 70 passing attempts with 532, 389, 544, 436,417, and 734 yards in their games. Cal Bears offense has also increased in yardage and scoring with pass attempts over the last three games – 30, 42, 53 for 380 , 458 and 527 yards. NC State QB Briskett was effective versus Florida State slinging it 48 times and completing 32 and torching FSU for 359 yards. UH has to just sling it. Find a QB that can sling it and just sling it!! I rather see a QB complete 30 passes with 2 interceptions than 10 pass completions with no interceptions.

I just wanna win!!!!! No matter how no matter who. Sorry to here about JG he is a loss but I have been a fan of Bennysince he got there……look for him to blossom under the lights!!!! Really think the the OL needs a tweak but reserve comment on what I think should take place. Just win, the game. They got a back who can produce a QB who can chuck…..the OL is patchwork. You can get to the outside on the D. This should be a breakout game for the O if there was ever going to be one….nuff said I just wanna win…Go Warriors!!!!
