DJ fills lead role

Few noticed when defensive secondary coach Daronte’ Jones was promoted to assistant head coach the past spring.

Perhaps, it was because UH did not announce Jones’ added role.

And that appears to fit Jones’ style and personality. In Norm Chow’s absence, Jones is handling the head coach’s administrative duties. As always, Jones shares the credit, noting it is a collaborative effort amongst the coaching staff to fill in for Chow. “It’s not going to be a one-man show,” Jones said.

Jones is smart, works hard, is respected, and offers thoughtful observations.

“I was always taught, when I was younger, ‘think before you talk,'” Jones said. “Because once you speak, it’s out there. You can’t take it back.”

It always throws me off when the DBs credit “Coach Jones.” I’m like … what? Uh, oh, I get it.

No update since yesterday, when she was recovering from a second procedure to drain fluids. It’s a tough deal. I’m sure the family appreciates everyone’s well wishes and prayers.

I recall seeing an announcement for the open position earlier this year but thought Chow didn’t hire anyone. I would think that comes with a pay increase since it was advertised.

  8. Shoko October 6, 2014 9:15 am

Any injury updates sustained from this past weekends games?

UH also didn’t announce Luke Matthews’ hiring.
The Star-Advertiser and the blog had a story on Matthews’ hiring, but there was no official announcement from the school.

I find it strange that multiple people say the basically the same things & one of them is called an a**hole. Get off your high horse.

In any case, well wishes to the Chow Ohana.

Kruzen, mahalo–I was just wondering that myself. A healthy Samson, is a great fit on most any team. So, while his 2 million a year is nothing to sneeze at, it rates at the bottom quarter of starting centers in the league.

    Good morning everyone!

A somber morning and continued well wishes for Mrs. Chow.

  25. Warbow October 6, 2014 11:33 am

Anyone have any information on the injuries from the Rice game? I’m worried about Julian Gener as soon as he left the game, Rice found their running game and drove the field twice for scores.

  26. 4-Prong October 6, 2014 11:34 am

also, people getting personally butthurt over anonymous internet comments over people they don’t know personally. entertaining. jeezy has trollish tendencies, but he just didnt’ want to engage in faux sympathy over an individual who he doesn’t care personally about.

  27. Shoko October 6, 2014 11:35 am

Wyoming averages 16.4 points per game.

  29. Maddog50 October 6, 2014 11:51 am

The frustration and angst are at a high point. I for one will fervently continue to support this program and this staff. Changes will be made to be more productive on offense. In retrospect every unit looked off during this past game. No excuse but you have to score 3x on offense to be in games. I am confident this will happen beginning this week. Go Warriors

  30. tom-warriornation October 6, 2014 12:19 pm

We better not take Wyoming lightly since we are favored, lol.
And can we stop these non-sense predictions?

  31. Tiki808 October 6, 2014 12:35 pm

good afternoon. Lunch time. I heard about the loss at Rice. 1-4 overall and the season only gets tougher from here on end. I am a Pearl City Mustangs fan, so I’m used to being the unknown OIA high school being called a who? They need to start winning.

  32. Shoko October 6, 2014 12:36 pm

I thought Chow returns today to get back to work on this weekends game.

    No?

  33. Stephen Tsai October 6, 2014 12:37 pm

I find it interesting that many are stunned that UH is opening as a 3.5-point favorite.
It’s what the market bears. The oddsmakers’ goal is to set the line so that half will bet one side, half the other. Again, it’s bettors who set the line. So, if you disagree, then go downtown and take the points.

  34. Andrew October 6, 2014 12:39 pm

    30.

Pearl City High School Mustangs? Well that’s new

  35. Shoko October 6, 2014 12:44 pm

I make it a practice to not bet against the Warriors unless I know they can cover or beat the spread.

Sure wish I played the money line in the Arizona – Oregon game. Friend put down $500 dollars. because he scored on a couple of parlay cards the week before.

He ended up winning over $6,700 on that game!

  36. 4-Prong October 6, 2014 12:47 pm

Andrew: maybe tiki is like 90 years old and that’s what pearl city’s mascot was back when racial segregation was still legal and the cool place on a friday night was the malt shop.

  37. bowwar October 6, 2014 12:55 pm

For what it’s worth, UH 27 – WYO 24…It will be a nail-biter, but UH will hopefully prevail with a new QB at the helm.

State an opinion and move-on…No sense in getting all “hu-hu” about it. Afterall, everyone is entitled to have one…Just keep it clean and respect everyone’s right to have an opinion.

  38. PONO October 6, 2014 1:01 pm

You know why 10 piece chicken nuggets are $1.49? Because it’s not chicken. Chicken shouldn’t come out of tube like toothpaste.

  39. Shoko October 6, 2014 1:10 pm

Wyoming offense averages 16.4 points per game.

Warrior defense, although giving some big plays in the end against Rice which I thought cost them the game, are still pretty good. Unless there is a lapse on defense, the Warriors have a good shot at getting the win. Might not be pretty and probably won’t silence the discontent expressed by fans, but it might be good for the team to start off 1-0 going into conference play.

  40. Shoko October 6, 2014 1:12 pm

    Hawaii–Wyoming football rivalry: Paniolo Trophy

Wyoming leads the series 13-8 and is on a six-game winning streak dating back to 1993.

Would be nice to win the trophy this year and be able to keep it for the next two years due to the intra-division rotation that occurs after this season.

  48. cocobean October 6, 2014 3:49 pm

Rice, another we shoulda kind of game. The team has always played their hearts out. The coaches have always coached their hearts out…the hardest working staff in the FBS in my opinion. The results just haven’t matched their efforts. Once the coaches and players figure out how to win/finish watch out.

  49. cocobean October 6, 2014 4:43 pm

4-P. Don;t think Tiki is that old. I grad HS in 1968. PCHS was not around then. PC kids went to either boola’s alma mater or Waipahu. Segregation was not legal in the US, at least not in thew 1900’s. Maybe in South Africa but not here.

  50. A-House October 6, 2014 5:17 pm

walking on the mezzanine to Main Street Station, we hear “Mr A-house, A-House”.

Midnight comes running and gives us a “hug”. He and Barbara were having lunch at Aloha Specialties. So nice to see them as we thought they were already back in Texas. Last meal in Vegas before heading to the airport – homeward bound!!

  51. islandman October 6, 2014 5:18 pm

Bobby C on sports animals said film showed seven sacks: 4 due to QB, 2 due to RB’s and one due to OL. Pedroza was open in end zone on flea flicker play, plus there were some other open receivers. Kennedy was limping badly the next day or something. Gener may have a broken ankle. Lataimua may be back.

They are considering a change at QB for the next game.

  52. Boolakanaka October 6, 2014 5:25 pm

    Coco…aka Joe Moore high-lol.

  53. Boolakanaka October 6, 2014 5:31 pm

Coco, 1968 was a good year to graduate HS, if I’m not mistaken, Hawaii 5-0 had its initial run in 68. Jim Nicholson was dominating at Kalaepohaku on the gridiron and on the hardwoods. If I recall correctly teaming up with Howie Dunnham and playing for the legend, Walter Wong.

  54. Warbow October 6, 2014 5:40 pm

What’s the status on Julian Gener? Notice Rice scored most of their points with him out.

  55. Z October 6, 2014 5:40 pm

Man I really like Gener and what he brings to the defense. Kennedy would be a huge loss. I think Pedroza is the fastest wr we got who plays regularly. He should be our deep threat right now. Got to get the coconut to him somehow. I remember seeing our tightened wide open in the flat on one play but our qb chose to run the ball.

  56. 4-Prong October 6, 2014 6:09 pm

cocobean: i kid, i kid. although segregation in the US was legal until the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

  57. cocobean October 6, 2014 6:17 pm

boola. Talk to any AHS grad no matter what year and they say “boola, yeah I know the guy.” Ask them about JM and the say, “Joe whoo?”

On the hardwood Big Jim was a bull in a china shop. Good thing he didn’t have a mean streak or a temper like Cliff Laboy FHS 70′.

  58. Boolakanaka October 6, 2014 6:25 pm

Coco…haha, you certainly jest!! If I had any notoriety, it’s because I was sophomore class representative of the “freedom for fafas movement”, making me quite on the vanguard of civil rights advocacy.

On hawaii football news, briefly communicated w John Ursua’s dad, and sounds like he is looking forward to playing football again….

  59. Bowwar October 6, 2014 7:53 pm

I thought Fonua played well & made some awesome plays.

  60. pollypicador October 6, 2014 9:10 pm

Well there’s always next year. Not really.

6 on defense, 3 on offense, PK, K, P, PR need to all be replaced. Plus the QB position needs to be replacing. If it’s Halloween-ish this year, and I don’t know what’s behind Chow’s mask, or what tricks he’s up to, next year promises to be Easter-ish, where Chow’s team will lay more eggs and his offense will resemble the bunny hop. This is bad, my optimism went out the window, and it landed in- waiting for the next head coach to come in.

Question-How can it get better? The Warriors play Colorado, Ohio State, Wisconsin on the road. Plus Boise comes into the rotation in league play (?). Further, there’s no foundation this season how can one magically appear next season? Execution? No. Fundamentals? No. Play calling? No. Run a simple screen or draw? No. Never. Sloppiness? Yes. Outlook? Think bunny hop.

I don’t know what else to say. People at the bar that I talked to during the game are the most congenial type people (donation to the football team, season ticket holders, attend practices…these types) and they, too, are losing their patience. People, like the ones at the bar and elsewhere, are saying the obvious…”Chow’s not a very good coach”…”I’m not renewing my season tickets”…”I’m not donating to the team.” Yet how can you blame them, when they see Chow’s mess. It’s really hard to take, especially when there’s no end in sight.

  61. Inyoface October 6, 2014 9:37 pm

This blog reminds me of that movie Lord of the Flies. Everyone’s happy go lucky in the beginning then start looking at eachother like their chopped liver. Losing can do that.

  62. st. anthony trojan October 6, 2014 9:48 pm

well all is not lost… not chows fault…is the taxi driver mostly….
ne way.. if players not execute.. nothing will work…
seems like not enough emotion or motivation…
of course some on here think both is not necessary..
no motivation equals zero out put…
von apple proved that.. after he left we won…
have not met the man.. but seems to me he is not a ‘motivator’ and can’y fire up the ‘troops’..

maybe a question those who follow…
if you had 3 minutes left on the clock…who would want to be ur QB…
WHEN YOU NEEDED A TD TO WIN ? PRO AND OR COLLEGE…???

like andrew said on game day… gives me the jitters knowing we had ikaika back
there knowing we needed a td with minutes to go…guess he is still shaking he hre he

  63. cocobean October 6, 2014 9:57 pm

  64. cocobean October 6, 2014 10:51 pm

    st. tony. Andrew Luck.

Of course Chow owns 5-25 he’s the HC no sugar coating that. I don’t think Chow has lost the team yet. I think they’re still motivated and have played with emotion in every game. I can’t speak to the morale in the locker room when the coaches aren’t there. The crushing weight of 5-25 is a heavy burden for 18-23 year olds to bear.

I’ve seen us getting better. We’ve been close so many times. Now it’s a matter of learning what it takes to win. The light bulb still hasn’t turned on for Chow and Co.

  65. st. anthony trojan October 6, 2014 11:05 pm

it is not the light bulb…that is wrong..it is the ‘juice to it’ that seems to be the problem..

  66. SteveM October 6, 2014 11:37 pm

I had a dream. It looked a lot like this …

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jncd4zzRjDE

f you were told the jersey numbers were switched in the video, you could name the players on the video with ones today.

  67. cocobean October 6, 2014 11:43 pm

    st tony.

I still believe for this team the difference winning and losing is so close. The epiphany on how to win will come. I’ve aired my share of gripes on the coaches but reserved any comments on player performance to face to face conversations only.

I am of the belief that fans venting their frustrations is okay especially if it makes them feel better. I also believe it doesn’t help the team in any way. If it did I’d make ex posters like steve and CG look like they’re Chow’s biggest supporters.

  68. Stephen Tsai October 6, 2014 11:52 pm
