Any idea if the coaches plan on opening up the blinn or navarro pipeline during this trip?? Blinn has a OK.State transfer at qb putting up video game type numbers. Blinn always has good dbs too

Good afternoon to ST in the BBQ state!

Texas BBQ’s reminded me of the this excerpt from ST’s September 6, 2007 blog entry from Houston. I think he wanted to name the restaurant “Hungry Cow BBQ”. 🙂

…We’re at the hotel in Houston, where the rooms are $199 a night but gas is only $2.60 a gallon.
Ferd and I just got back from Goode’s, the best BBQ restaurant in Houston — or so proclaimed by the Travel Channel. I’ve decided that DPK, Bulla, SteveM and I are opening up a BBQ place in Hawai‘i.
But I digress.
We entered the lobby, where we were met by coaches Rich Miano, Dennis McKnight and Mel deLaura. They’re looking for a 24-Hour Fitness. They don’t have a car.
Flashback to last year: McKnight carjacks the rental.
This time we’re in the clear. The valet has the car keys.

Regarding Timmy Chang’s testament to wanting to coach at the NCAA level.

Here’s a person that made the move to what ever door is open. He wasn’t choosy. He wasn’t fussy. He just wanted to coach. He even bided his time at the HS level.

He just needed a break.

After a stop at SMU (Chang’s first break courtesy of Coach Jones) where he got his feet wet in Texas country the local boy from Hawaii, who I fondly remember as a menace as a student-athlete riding his bike on the sidewalk (almost hitting me once) in the University area during his playing days for the Warriors, makes the coaching move to Mississippi and Jackson State. Who would have thought? Here’s Hawaii moving in with the Cosby’s, Jefferson’s, and Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, so to speak, as Chang takes the OC job at the historically black college and community. To give you another perspective: of the 10 coaches on the staff-8 are black. Of the roster of players-4 are white.

Chang’s transition to Mississippi and Jackson State allows him to further his craft. It allows him to fill out his resume and get noticed. It also allows to exclusively absorb another culture, see how the other side works and communicates and it also allows him to bond/work with black players, coaches and community. If Chang is received, endorsed and applauded at Jackson State this is huge on his resume.

A quick look at the 3-2 Jackson State, specifically Chang’s offense-a 59, 33, 30,22, 7 scoring outputs.

I don’t know too much of the specifics on what’s below the surface to Chang’s coaching (i.e., type of offense he runs, numbers, feedback) but I do know that he’s covered the terrain in Canada (as a CFL player), Hawaii (HS, college), Texas (with Jones)…and now Mississippi. If anything Chang has lived an enriching existence (I envy him), where he is seeing more than the football nature of life- coexisting with different people, and coaching. Chang is taking the right steps. Credit to his self drive and perhaps his parents upbringing.

Yeah he sure is mancrushing on him. I also didn’t like his viewpoint on the trainer tackling the fan down at that cfb game. I thought the force used was warranted considering how close the fan was getting to the players on the field. Bobby thinks that just because the fan was scrawny that he is harmless. I mean he may look harmless, but you never know. It doesn’t take a huge muscled out guy to handle a gun, knife, or even bomb. I think when people start becoming complacent and “judging a book by its cover” is when something serious can happen.

I thought BC was a husband and father.

Gigi, I’m not exaggerating. It’s really annoying. He even replayed an interview with someone that he was gushing over Luck with. I thought I was going crazy cuz I knew I heard the interview before. I like BC but this Luck man crush is sickening.

During that segment, a caller chimed in and said pretty much the same viewpoint I have that the use of force was warranted and that now days really don’t know what people are capable of. BC got pretty worked up about that and pretty much talked over the guy the entire time and didn’t let him talk very much at all. I was pretty much ready to change the channel at that point. It’s okay to differ in viewpoints but on the BC show I notice it’s difficult to be able to voice a different opinion without getting talked over. Because of that I like listening to the Sports Animals a lot more.

Just don’t think football goes away because of the unfortunate deaths and tons of lawsuits… The sport generates enough money on all levels that it can easily absorb the hit. Only way is if the participants themselves choose to quit, and that isn’t happening.

The most devastating hit I saw in person was Colt being flattened by a Fresno State player in ’07. Fresno had the poor taste to show the replay several times during Hawaii’s game there to jack up their fans.

I would like to see a comparison between football and rugby as far as the head injury’s are concerned.

ST: Don’t wish too hard for rain, as Houston is known for it’s “sheet rain”…I experienced “sheet rain” there and I didn’t believe that rain fell like that. We surely don’t have it here in the islands…

Timmy Chang is not the only ex-Hawaii player earning his stripes in coaching. Craig Stutzman is the offensive coordinator at Emory and Henry College in Virginia (Southern school, but mixed). He has accumulated quite a background for his resume.

As to the risk of brain injury, the game of football is and will change considerably– not stop, but change. Mothers play a role in this and many are holding their kids out of football– even in places like Texas. As evidence mounts– like it did with smoking–the pressure for change will be greater. Even some NFL players and retirees say they would not let their sons play football as it currently is. Football can still be exciting and be safe by eliminating certain types of play.

Menehune: small in stature, great in spirit.

Boola: the author of the forbes article is unaware of the fact that football helmets were invented because there were spikes in head fractures back in the early day of football (and there were a BUNCH of rule changes because football was almost banned for being too violent back then). the helmets greatly reduced the occurrences of skull fractures, but as the game evolved, concussions became the issue.

Removing helmets may substitute concussion issues for skull fracture issues again.

Get rid of the rigid helmets, use the jabon skin like small-kid time

Yeah I’d agree that bowing shouldnt be a big deal but that’s a penalty the refs really look at so to give them a chance to even consider calling it is stupid. Even if its an emotional game he should have jus refrained from doing that no matter how minor it seems

also, the post-td handshakes wouldn’t be considered a flag. let’s settle down, here. oregon just wasn’t that good (because their line is flat out bad). It’s been a recurring issue for the whole season.

Tried Guava Smoked the other day and was underwhelmed. Was disappointed they didn’t have smoked brisket on the menu. The smoked pork was good but nothing special.

4-Prong (#73-75): When I compare the single Oregon bow (link below) with the multiple handshakes (Salas video from #71), it seems very clear that the handshakes are much more celebratory. I don’t think either are inappropriate. Perhaps, the one point in favor of the flag is made in the sbnation article: “It’s worth noting Arizona got a similar penalty earlier in the game.” However, I missed the Arizona penalty.

What I took away from watching the AZ/OR game was AZ had a well crafted game plan. Rich Rod used a 4 wide formation for a majority of the plays with the receivers aligned in various ways. They ran the ball 55 times for 208 yds, 3 tds. Passing was 20-31 for 287 yd, 1td. Of the 20 completions 15 went to players listed on their roster at running backs. Undoubtedly some of those RBs were aligned as H backs or possibly in the slot.

Rich Rod had the OR D spread all over the field. Most of the game OR had 6 men or less in the box. When they used an H back they passed to him off of play action or they hit the RB who leaked out to the opposite flat. Seemed like the wides were used to run long to stretch the D then hand off or hit the RB leaking out. This was especially effective when they stacked the wides near each side line.

What we haven’t seen is what you’ll call a well crafted game plan from our team. They have not done a good job of spreading the opposing D nor have they done a good job of involving the TE, Hback or RB in the passing game. Our play calling sequence doesn’t seem to set up the next play. Our game plan is simplistic based on execution. Execute and steady move the chains. We have shown the ability to get to the red zone on some drives but not the ability to score TDs when the D is packed in with less field to defend.

Chow is known to be a master craftsman of offenses and a grandmaster of play calling moves. It’s too bad he’s delegated a large part of game planning and play calling to others.

I was looking at the pictures in the blog entry, specifically that of the player wearing #5. Cross referencing I can see he is listed at 6’2″ and 220(weight is disputable). Before going on further, I write, not to criticize, but for the player to raise the bar. There is a reason. Of all the great receivers going thru the program the one commonality that I see is that those players that spend a lot of time in the weight room perform a lot better on the field. Salas, Rivers, Bess they all had impressive physiques that were sculptured with muscle, and it reflected well in how they performed on the field. The SC needs to put some beef on some of his players.

4-P. checkout highlights of the 2011 season for Utah. Chow did a good job varying his formations and play calling. Though mainly a power offense he caught the defenses guessing wrong numerous times as to where the point of attack was on the run and who the pass was going to.

Rich Rod did a good job of using passing formations to run the ball and a hint of a run with the H back to set up a pass or play action to set up a pass. He disguised his run first game plan with passing formations. It was amazing that play action passes were effective from a 4 wide formation.

No disrespect to the Pinoy and Pinay out there.

How are things progressing up there?

Pretty interesting story about how the homeless are migrating to Honolulu Airport and finding shelter there. The fact that some are using outlets to charge their personal devices might indicate Hawaii is dealing with a whole new demographic of homeless folks compared to other parts of the country.

Rich Rodriguez the AZ coach is another disciple of Mouse Davis. He changed his offense to the four wide and no tight end using videos and ideas he got from Mouse and from June. He and June watched each other’s games when June was here. Rich Rod wanted to run more so he eventually adopted the use of the big slot and Hback which June used in the pros. June was a big fan of Rich Rod’s offense at West Virginia– he praised Rich Rod’s innovations that built a powerful run game around the four wide spread and shotgun.

#103. How often have we tried? AZ disguised their pass plays well. We try to hit the tailback on swings and screens. AZ was hitting the backs and TE off of play action and by formations that left the flats open.

Do you remember Vele’s catch against NIU on our last drive? Play action. AZ was doing that and using their formations to open those short flares. They even had the RB run wheel routes and delayed verticle routes when OR rushed four or less.

BTW Buckner plays a lot too. Not overwhelming performance but does a decent job as a 3-4 end holding the edge.

I noticed that Mariota and the Solomon have backs and receivers who have glue on their hands. Anything thrown close is usually caught. Do they use stickum ?

Anu Solomon in an interview in SI.com says that he was inspired by meeting Mariota at a clinic at St. Louis High School when he was in high school– Mariota counseled humility and focus. Anu said he hopes that one day he will mean as much to Hawaii as Marcus does– this was shortly before the Oregon AZ game.

GIGI don’t bother the meister, while he’s whileing his ribs.

I like vanilla ice cream but don’t care for vanilla offenses. I feel UH should add more flavor to the offense they’re serving up. After the first couple of drives they seem to my untrained eye, to settle into bland formations. Usually 2 wides, 1 slot and a TE. They’re always balanced in this formation wide and slot on one side with the TE and one wide on the other. They hardly ever have 3 receivers on one side. The other formation they use a lot is 2 wides, TE and a H back split opposite the RB. Even is this formation they balance the receivers 2 on each side of the QB.
Once they’re lined up there’s no resetting of positions or motion of any kind. They just run the play.

The offense is based on execution whether it’s a run or pass. UH is playing with a sense of you might have an idea of what plays we’re going to run but can you stop them if we execute.
