Back on the field
The Warriors will be back on the practice field this afternoon ahead of Saturday’s road game against Rice.
Despite the bye, the Warriors had a full schedule last week, including three long practices and extensive meetings and video sessions.
The Warriors did not practice the past weekend. But the coaches worked on recruiting, self-scouting and finalizing the game plan.
For this trip, the Warriors depart Wednesday evening on a non-stop flight to Houston. They will have a full practice on Thursday and a walk-through session on Friday. The game will not be played in elevation (downtown Houston is 50 feet above sea level). For its only home game in September, attendance was announced at 17,558 at 70,000 Rice Stadium.
On the other hand, Rice won last year’s Conference USA title, quarterback Driphus Jackson is a dual threat, and running back Jowan Davis is difficult to tackle.

I only drove by the Glades on Hotel St but I did go to Club Hubba Hubba and The Swing Club with my friends. There also was strip tease at the Oasis near the UH but now a storage facility. Oasis was torn down. One of the places that had dancing. My young days.

Needed to wikipedia, Rice Stadium as I was intrigued by its’ 70,000 capacity (currently 50,000 with endzones tarped). Came across this gem statement “The stadium can be reconfigured to its original capacity, which is larger than the total number of Rice’s living and deceased alumni” lol… GO BOWS!!!
Charlie Weis and Norm Chow have almost identical records but Weis gets fired and we’re STILL somehow stuck with Chow, completely mind boggling!

Former UH Athlete, everything is big in Texas. And every Texas school is big on football. Rice recruits well in Texas because of their academic reputation and financial support. They are the current defending champions of Conference USA, beating Marshall for the Championship. CUSA is a better conference than the Mountain West. SMU, not a power house in the MWC, blew out top teams from the MWC in Nevada with Kaepernick, and Fresno two years ago when Fresno was co-champ of MWC.
Well, in lieu of BBQ ribs, hubby and I will have lunch at Gyotaku today.

But he is also wearing blue shorts (blue and yellow = Punahou colors).
Punahou and Roosevelt used to be arch rivals, back when I was a student at RHS.
Needless to say, we are both wearing rubber slippahs.
I had some barbecue at a very popular joint in Kansas City, Missouri recently. Did not care for it too much. It was tender, but more vinegary and smokey than what I’m used to. Plus it was a little dry. I like it sweeter and moist like that served by Tony Roma’s. But it was good to try something different. There are various styles of barbecue ribs.

Sofaking–There is a ocean of difference between Charlie and Norm–and they are mainly dollars.
Charlie had a guaranteed contract of 2.5 million, annually with KU. In addition, at the of his departure his had a little under 20 million still owed to him. In fact, a friend told me he is still getting notre dame money with 5 million still owed.
The world has not seen an over-rated, overpaid, underperforming coach as Charlie– not too shabby for a guy that the closest thing to ever playing was IMs in college…..hint, I really can’t stand him. I think he looks at Pete Carroll up in Seattle, sees his still trim waist line, the national championships, and Super Bowl trophies, and well wants to go to an all-you-eat Buffett and drain his sorrows.

Based on his play so far this year, he might actually be underpaid with his $100 million contract.
Interesting thing about Watt is that he was only a two-star recruit and signed with a small school out of high school. I remember when UH played Wisconsin a few years ago. He must have sacked Moniz three times and had a bunch of hurries. Poor Mo was running for dear life.
There seems to be a lot of quarterback turmoil in the MWC West division this season.
San Jose State switched from Blake Jurich to Joe Gray. Boise State might switch from Grant Hendricks, if he has another bad game, to Ryan Finley. Fresno State didn’t have a quarterback beginning of the season and finally announced Brian Burrell over Brandon Connette. San Diego State lost Quinn Kaehler to a shoulder injury and is being replaced by freshmen Nick Bawden. UNLV’s Blake Decker is struggling and wouldn’t be surprised Nick Sherry is called up.
If Chow’s offense was clicking, I would say they have a very good chance of being bowl eligible this season.

Rice had a good game this past weekend over Southern Mississippi, so it’s going be a “toss-up” as to who will bring their “A Game”. I’m hoping that UH’s defense will hold Rice and our offense will score a few late TDs with Taylor Graham at the helm in a relief role.
It’s been awhile since I’ve been back to Houston, but there was an excellent Cajun restaurant called Magnolias which was really good…

#40: Dunno where you went in KC, but they’ve got the best BBQ ribs without question…There is Gates BBQ, Jack Stacks, Arthur Bryants, LC’s, and many others there. I was there last summer and had a great BBQ meal at Oklahoma Joe’s in Kansas City. Needless to say, I get my fill of BBQ in KC everytime I go there. The “hole in the walls” are the best bbqs in KC, which adequately describes LC’s and others…
Hawaii can beat Rice IF they score 30 points. Which will not happen, on the road.
Rice QB Jackson apparently is healthy and had a good game against S. Miss this past weekend, a 41-23 win on the road. We have QB problems with a lack of productivity and inconsistency. We keep hoping, but it’s 4 games into the season and conference starts next weekend. Time to see what Reilly can do. Maybe he can’t, but you don’t know what he can do until you give him a chance. Maybe he’s a gamer. We need a spark. We need a glimmer of hope. HOPE! The mother of all things.

#58: Boola…The best steakhouse, bar none, is in KC known as the Hefford House. The best steaks I’ve ever eaten and you have to buy the Kansas City Strip, whenever you’re there. Absolutely good stuff!
Another deal, is that you can buy BBQ ribs from several of the places there and have it wrapped up as a “plate lunch” with cole slaw and beans. My friend and I used to take it to Kauffman stadium and tailgate with it before watching a Royals game…
Added note: The Royals have made it into the play-offs for the first time in years, so the city is going absolutely insane since it’s a small market (like Honolulu) and there isn’t much to cheer about normally…

For me, the best steaks I ever ate is at the Metropolitan Grill in Downtown Seattle on 5th Avenue. The greatest Porterhouse and Delmonico.
If the QB situation doesn’t improve much, I think UH will be around 3 wins max.
If the QBs just complete the open throws they should complete, then Rice, Wyoming, San Jose St, UNLV, Fresno and Nevada become winnable games.
Nevada is looking like a lock for a loss with a healthy Fajardo and Fresno has a lot of time to right the ship by the time UH visits at the end of the season.
Pretty amazing how fast some programs drop when they have to replace successful multi-year starters.
Around 1983 or 1984 I was working on the second floor of building on Nuuanu. the back window looked out towards the back of Club Hubba Hubba. Occasionally the strippers would sunbathe topless on the roof. When anyone in the office noticed a howl would go up. The guys would head to the windows to check out the action and yell to the strippers. Usually they would give an impromptu ‘dance’ for our entertainment before heading indoors.

#69: No brainer…Mack should have been given his final year to show the fruits of his labor. Miano, Lee, Rolovich, etc. would have probably produced a winning season, albeit, not by much. Too bad, I hope all the Mack haters are enjoying the results.
#65: Dat’s good, as the Galleria area is the “upscale” area where the good shopping and restaurants were. Funny, but I also recalled the “gentlemen’s clubs” being these huge palaces with Roman columns that stood out in the area. Interesting, but they obviously spent alot of money making those places look somewhat “classy.” The Hard Rock had a ’57? Chevy rotating in the air outside of the restaurant. They definitely like to accentuate things in Texas…
70… Always a tough proposition to let a college coach ride out the final year without an extension. That’s a major negative recruiting point that’s used by rival coaches going for the same recruits.
You can get away with it to a certain degree in pro sports because you don’t have the constant roster turnover like you do in college, but even pro franchises will cut ties rather than let a coach ride it out, unless money is tight (some NBA or MLB teams)
On a somber note, Jovan Belcher was (KC murder/suicide) was confirmed to have CTE. Adding to an ever growing list, that has among others players like, Andre Waters, Dave Duerson, and Junior Seau, of folks having CTE and committing suicide. Pathology is becoming much more substantive….
Fehoko was on the nose and Mililani’s center D’Amato is only 5’6″. The Trojans doubled and sometimes tripled Fehoko. Whenever I watch Mililani I watch their center. Amazing. He did really good job against Campbell too.
Nothing fancy, but Trail Dust Steakhouse, Arlington, TX (just outside of Dallas) has great steaks at a reasonable price. Informal place; wear your boots n’ Wrangler jeans. Sit on picnic tables.

OK Joe’s is the place if you can get a seat Arthur Bryant’s is awesome for lunch. In a pinch, Gates is okay, too. Looked for Backyard BBQ last summer. Was not able to find it – located, apparently, in a residential type area, with limited seating.
I no like Fehoko on the nose. He is more effective on the edge.

Although it’s beating a dead horse. I’m sure going 5-22 is worse than having 1 year left on contract while just winning a co-WAC title the year before, top 25 ranking and a 6-7 year coming off a rebuilding year in which 4 starters went to the NFL.

A Chow coached team has never traveled this way in the past–flying non stop for a road game, leaving on a Wednesday ahead of a Saturday game. Is Rice footing the bill?
For the players it’s pinch me time to see if this is really happening.
Ditto for the writer.
Giving the players less stress in traveling gives the team the best opportunity to succeed. This method of traveling, I predict, will pay dividends. For the shrewd bettors… they should be all over this. The Warriors should be up for this game, full of energy, and combined with the bye week and the new method of traveling…I expect to see a good performance from the Warriors this Saturday.
This is great. I am very enthused. I can’t wait to see this game.
Let me add another thing.
Often times in the past (from year one and on), I would read the Monday blog entries during the football season in how the blog host would describes the team spending their Mondays not having an on the field practice. Instead the team would have conditioning and team meetings. That was the teams routine…non practice Mondays. I questioned why. I mocked Chow’s decision to hold off from practicing on Monday (it didn’t make sense…all the other teams are practicing). And lo and behold guess what? The team is back to practicing on Monday (see today’s blog entry). And following the OSU and NI games the team had a light workout on the field at night. So the point is that I think if people raise questions towards the coach, all most to a point ad nauseam (my niche) and ridicule, it may have an effect.

I remember posting sometime before Mack’s last game to extend his contract at a lower salary and anoint a coach in waiting…..Adrian Klemm. I thought he was too young at that time but would be an immediate help in recruiting. That it would be a smooth transition since he played/lived here he. He knew the staff and the offense. Second choice was Rich.
82. I would have extended his contract by a year at a lesser amount maybe 6-700k. If he failed to provide a winning season the next year then retire him at 3-400k at the end of 2012 season. Also I like your coaches! Klemm is killing it at recruiting and Rich could have kept the same staff and let go the reins on Rolo a bit. But the one we missed out on last year Dino Babers was a huge mistake.
I’m really getting my doubts about playing without an OC. Watching the 1st half of the Georgia/Tennessee game I came away thinking SEC schools have the money to spend to get the best coaching talent available. The sophistication of the schemes and play calling are on another level from ours. They are run first/based offenses but they use formations and the sequence of plays to keep the defenses guessing.
Both teams took the vast majority of snaps from the gun. From the gun they had an even balance of plays with 3 wides and a TE, 3 wides with the TE in the slot and 4 wides. Georgia did run several series from the traditional Power I. The first time they showed that look the threw and completed 3 straight play action passes. They started on their 19 with that formation but when they reached the Red Zone they went into a 4 wide. In fact both teams used some sort of spread every time they reached the red zone.
Chow really needs someone dedicated to drafting a game plan and calling plays. It’s obvious he can’t spend all his energies on this task. He really needs a qualified coach that can. I don’t think Kevin Clune would be doing as well as he has been if he had to oversee the D and perform the administrative duties of the HC.
#80 – no one practices Monday after a game, they practiced cause they didn’t play on Saturday.

What is the guys problem. A person can prove it 12 ways under the sun that a lot of teams do practice Mondays following a Saturday game. He should get outside more often. See the sun. Or better yet even read other teams blog and then he will see what he wrote is laughable. (still in terms of service…no worries).
Ok, clarify, UH has never practiced on Monday after a game. Tomey didn’t, Wagner didn’t, Jones didn’t. Running sprints, watch film, but no practice. Is that ok with you Roy-san?
boolakanaka reminds some of Lynn Lu or Linda Lu from Forbidden City on Kalaukaua Av. back in the early-mid sixties. He was a goodlooking half and half. Oldtimers should remember “Forbidden City”. They had “Princess Pupule” as well. They all had to wear pasties. Nostalgia.

I’m not so sure about the real deal… I know a player who had no scholarship offers from any D1 program and he handled his own vs Fehoko. He goes to UH and his name is Kaiwi Chung standing at 5’10”-5′-11″ at the most 250lbs. He was very good against Fehoko. And I know a bunch of people know this also….
Don’t get me wrong. Fehoko is a man among boys. We shall see how good he really is when he gets into college…. I for one want any local kid to stay home but I know we can’t keep them all. But I always hope they make the right decision for themselves. I hope all the local kids that leave good luck. If we did keep all the local stars I believe we would be able to make a name for ourselves like how Boise did. That is if we could get every top local prospect of course.
Since we taxpayer of Hawaii directly support the University, which includes the athletic department, why is it that unless we subscribe to Oceanic we are not able to even purchase the viewing of OUR team’s away game (Rice). How do we expand the fan base by restricting access? Shall I go to Applehouse to watch the game as I am sure that they have Oceanic there?

Backup QBs get 3 TDs. Defense gets 10 points.

Wathced every Rice game including the Southern Miss game 2X. One thing for sure you both run and pass on their Defense which is a 4-3 cover 2 as a base. Not big compared to our more recent opponents including NIU. Offense is a run first with a bull of a RB at 5-7 200 lbs. They play out of mostly a single back set but do not really throw outside the numbers. Its option, draw, screen, intermediate pass based on 4 games. Shut down the run and you got em. Nothing special about these guys unless you make them special. This is a very winnable game if it is approached from the point that do what it takes to win. Despite the 8 hours they will spend on the plane (which I recently did) they have two days to recover which is good. I like the Warriors in this one and look for Woolsey to be improved. Go Warriors
