Any given bye day

One of the fun things about bye week is the different players who get a shot.

Yesterday, that was running back Pereese Joas.

per1

His turn with the regular offense was so unexpected that the media relations staff could not identify him. Despite joining near the end of training camp, Joas is not listed in the media guide or roster.

But we remember Joas from his breakout performance at UH’s tryouts for walk-ons in February 2013. He had the fastest sprint times, the longest jumps, the longest hair.

Three weeks later, Texas-raised Joas was added to the UH roster. But there was one condition. He had to abide by the Warriors’ short-hair policy. Joas agreed, cut his hair and then learned he did not have enough credits to participate in spring training.

That fall, he also did not earn enough credits to play in the 2013 season.

Nor the 2014 spring training.

per2

But he kept at it, and finally was declared eligible this summer. He was not added to the initial training-camp roster. But with injuries, he eventually was summoned.

This season, he has practiced as a running back on the scout offense. Yesterday, while still wearing his yellow scout jersey, he was invited to take turns with the regular offense. He had some nice runs, displaying speed and quick-cut agility.

The Warriors are restocked at running back with Diocemy Saint Juste, Dominique Small, Jason Muraoka and, even, Justin Vele backing Steven Lakalaka. But for a day, at least, Joas showed persistence can be rewarded.

Here’s his highlight video: Joas

#144 (cocobean, yesterday)… dreams are still bound by mathematics … so …
    dreams > season +bowl – reality 🙂

    12 (dreams) +3 (reality) = 15
    13 (season) + 1 (bowl) = 14 (no MWC playoff)

  2. DaveLetterMan September 26, 2014 6:09 am

    Morning, Tsaikos!
    Top 5
ST, Joas didn’t take or earn enough credits?
    Go Warriors!

  3. oneseason September 26, 2014 6:17 am

Lesson: check credits before cutting hair 🙂

  4. DaveLetterMan September 26, 2014 6:18 am

ST, is Joas a Fr or Soph? At least he got things taken care of in the classroom which is the main concern for a STUDENT athlete.

  5. DaveLetterMan September 26, 2014 6:19 am

    oneseason, u funny.

  6. Boolakanaka September 26, 2014 6:44 am

Damm, what if Bruddha was one academic Samson???

  7. oldtimer808 September 26, 2014 6:49 am

Good morning that is one fast small dude. Has he been able to put some weight on? I hope he continues to succeed. Hope Coach Chow opens his play book and use the natural abilities of his players. Ewaliko looks ready to really contribute.

  8. cocobean September 26, 2014 7:04 am

    morning all.

    Joas. Jet sweep.

  9. kawika49 September 26, 2014 7:13 am

    Is Kekoa, really in Kiev?

  10. Boolakanaka September 26, 2014 7:16 am

If he is, I know a real good place for him to get Kynsh and Babka….

  11. hatakeman September 26, 2014 7:21 am

Would like to see how he performs under the lights.

  12. NorthShoreFan September 26, 2014 7:31 am

    Guud Morning Tsaikos…bootiful day.

    #9 Kawika…I was wondering the same thing…???

Joas looks good on film. Noticed most runs outside edge. Got lots of quicks and good leg drive. The line really made some pukas for him. Can he run between the tackles?
Anyhoo, we can use all the help we can get. Lakalaka needs some relief.

  13. NorthShoreFan September 26, 2014 7:33 am

    Hard to find 4.35 speed.

  14. tommui September 26, 2014 7:35 am

    GOOD MORNING, HAWAII!

  15. Old School Dave September 26, 2014 7:40 am

    Aloha Kakahiaka, to all.

It’s peanut butter jelly time, peanut butter jelly time……..
Pac-12 Schools like UCLA, UW, and even Utah have snack sandwiches for their players that look the kind you buy from behind the counter at Whole Foods with veggies I cannot even pronounce :-). Cannot imagine coaches like Jim Mora Jr., Chris Petersen, or Steve Sarkisian making sandwiches for their players. Well, it is what it is and you just have to fight through it.

    Great story on Pereese Joas.

  16. gigi-hawaii September 26, 2014 7:40 am

Samson and Delilah — too funny!
Mellow start to the day. Let’s see it continue!

    Awesome!

  20. NorthShoreFan September 26, 2014 7:44 am

  22. gigi-hawaii September 26, 2014 7:45 am

And hubby pointed out to me that Jeff Ulbrich is UCLA’s defensive coordinator.
I used to enjoy watching him play for UH back in the day.
Glad he is so successful as a DC now.

  23. NorthShoreFan September 26, 2014 7:46 am

    Jeter…classic moment.

oneseason: got a chuckle from your hair comment hehe 🙂

Nice story about Mr, Joas! Thanks for the video of him zigging and zagging to find open pockets everywhere thru traffic, and even improvising a leap over for TD! Smart running and avoiding! Yeah!

Good luck to Preece Joas – Keep up your hard work, Preece!! 😀

  27. UHfan808 September 26, 2014 8:10 am

Hehe about Beau II, gigi 🙂

Well sorta – I read all about the last Jeter game. Still can’t believe he’s retiring. What an incredible career.

  28. UHfan808 September 26, 2014 8:10 am

    Kekoa in Kiev?

  29. tom-warriornation September 26, 2014 8:10 am

Good morning Tsaikos!!! Hope all have a great day!!!
Again, nice to see the understudies getting shots with persistence.

Kekoa is not in Kiev, he is in Nigeria collecting from one of his long lost relatives who tragically died in a car accident but the Nigerian government wants to take their money if a relative doesn’t claim it so Kekoa went there….Hackers….LMFAO

  36. gigi-hawaii September 26, 2014 8:54 am

Hey, Kekoa, when you get your money in Nigeria, send me some!

  37. gigi-hawaii September 26, 2014 8:58 am

I would love to visit Russia some day, though, even if Kekoa ain’t in Kiev.
    Piroshki tastes good.
Something like malasadas, but with delicious filling.

  38. UHAlum September 26, 2014 9:01 am

ST: How did the QB’s do? Any idea why they’re so inconsistent in the game?

  39. Duster September 26, 2014 9:11 am

Seeing Joas in a red jersey in his video made me think of Joe Igber.

  40. Boolakanaka September 26, 2014 9:17 am

Boolas spent time in both places. So, while they do have a shared culture, there are rather distinct characteristics to both: societal and political.

Kiev is like many Central European cities — bustling, a lot of mafia and poor infrastructure. Odessa is quaint in a rough sort of way, it’s like a poor San Francisco, with lots of military history.

St. Pete’s is beautiful, well, at least the parts of the city that’s been restored. Moscow is huge, and makes honolulu traffic seem like a walk around Ko Olina in the morning. Interesting feature about both, because of civil wars, brain drains, and chronic unemployment, there are not a lot of men in the country–so the female- male ratio is rather pronounced and noticeable. Male tsaiko–no get any ideas!!!!!

  41. islandman September 26, 2014 9:18 am

Give Pereese a chance in the game.

  42. pollypicador September 26, 2014 9:56 am

Correct me if I am wrong. During the second half of the Colorado game the 2 DE’s for the Warriors were mostly Luke and Kennedy? Should those two be the starters in the next game against Rice? It seems that when I watch Luke and Kennedy they find a way to getting to the QB, shaking off blockers, and getting into the backfield. Even the TV commentators were marveling about Kennedy’s play and from what I can see I think Luke (wait till he gets better stamina) is way more productive than Yap. Klune will have to make a decision. If he goes with his best players that will speak well of him.

Regarding the pass defense by Maggit on the long TD reception by the Colorado WR, Nelson Spruce. First of all Maggit was about 12 inches from deflecting the ball. The effort was there. It wasn’t like the defender was beat badly, although if you heard the sneers from the TV viewers where I watched the game you would have thought he was. I didn’t think it was that bad. It was perfect throw, perfect catch by a WR that was ranked by one publication as being the 60th best player in the nation.

    Next.

I would contradict the notion that the players were in great shape. I could see them on the sidelines, between plays, breathing hard. To me it’s a credit to their conditioning but I think if someone asked the players if they were tired I bet they would say they were gassed.

    Next.

The defensive backfield was in on 33 tackles against Colorado with Stevenson leading the way with 11, Phillips 9, Maggit 8. These trio played good run defense, showed good tackling skills.

    Next.

When it’s all said in done in Haring’s career. He will have caught a reception from how many different QB’s ? 5? One for the record book?

    Next.

The one player I remember from the past that was a sure handed wide receiver, caught passes in traffic, found a way to get open and took some vicious hits and very seldom dropped the ball- Justin Clapp. He made some clutch catches, especially on third downs. In his second season he had a quiet 38 catches. He was a workman like player that used his 6’2 height to out jump and out muscle the defenders. That’s the kind of receiver the Warriors need. With so many WR’s on the Warriors roster with height it’s surprising to me that the offensive coaches don’t run routes (like simple curls) designed to creating mismatches and letting the receiver a good opportunity at receiving the ball.

    Next.

Question. Does it seem that in the shotgun formation the distance between QB and center is shorter with Chow’s team? I call on the knowledge of a QB or a coach that has watched Moniz and past QB’s… that it seems to me that those QB’s are taking snaps out of the shot gun formation deeper into the backfield, which allows the quarterback to see over his offensive line and have a better field of vision. It just seems to me (and I could be wrong) that with IW he is taking the snap too close to the line, not dropping back, that it in turn confines his vision.

    Next.

IW’s showed some awesome arm strength at the close of the first half when he threw the hail marry pass that must have sailed at least 60 yards in the air and out of the end zone. That was a nice toss. Although people must have been bemoaning his attempt as it wasn’t close to giving any of his receivers a chance at the ball.

  43. al September 26, 2014 9:57 am

Island man…as John Lennon would blurt.
All we are saying is give pereese a chance.

  44. seewhy September 26, 2014 10:10 am

Wow, Pereese Joas was teammates with Jay Ajayi at Frisco Liberty.

  45. (Jesse)James September 26, 2014 10:14 am

al…Yuck yuck…and I only know that song because of all the late night Time Life music commercials….LOL

  46. hatakeman September 26, 2014 10:16 am

UCLA’s DC is Lou Spanos. Jeff Ulbrich is the Linebackers and special teams coach. It was UCLA’s special teams that destroyed Arizona St. 62-27 yesterday.

  47. Shoko September 26, 2014 10:21 am

I thought Spanos went to the NFL as a linebackers coach and Ulbrich was promoted to coordinator.

  48. cocobean September 26, 2014 10:23 am

If Joas showed well in practice they should use in a game one time to see how he does. Doesn’t he have a short shelf life? 2010 high school grad.

  49. Kanak September 26, 2014 10:27 am

hatakeman – gotta refresh your coaches chart as Ulbrich replaced Spanos as the DC, and looks like a fine young coach in the making. Unfortunately, UH doesn’t and will not have the $$ to bring him in…

  50. tom-warriornation September 26, 2014 10:29 am

If Joas has 4.35 speed, get him in the game now; and design plays to take advantage of his speed–that is top NFL speed!!!

  51. Da Punchbowl Kid September 26, 2014 10:33 am

    Good Morning Gangeez! 😉

al – you took the words right out of my mouth!

Happy to see Pereese is available. Can’t have too many 4.35 forty guys at RB!

  52. Kanak September 26, 2014 10:37 am

Great feel good story, but he won’t see the field. Been going on 2 years we’ve been pumping up Ewaliko in practice, and the kid barely sees the field and gets ONE touch. C’mon coach… GO BOWS!!!

  53. pollypicador September 26, 2014 10:40 am

    Regarding taste.

I would take O-16’s telecast of Warrior football game over all the others. Who wants to watch the PAC-12, ESPN or CBS telecasting Warrior games? At least when I watch O-16 I feel like I get the entire kitchen thrown at me. I get everything on my plate. Not one item is left out. Sure RK might not be the best. But I think RM as color and along with the pregame, halftime and postgame show with KL and cast– makes up for any shortcomings. I’m entertained, sated with play by play, analysis and entertainment.

Sure it’s home cooking, but that’s the way I like it.

  54. st. anthony trojan September 26, 2014 11:03 am

    yup game of inches… 12 inches = 72 yards….TD…

  55. gigi-hawaii September 26, 2014 11:07 am

    Boola,
Interesting view of your travels in Russia.

I guess it’s not the place to find a hubby, huh? Lol.

My mother went there during the 1970s and hated the Russian cuisine, which consisted of stewed cabbage and bits of meat.

I guess the food has improved since the collapse of the Soviet Union.
    More variety?

  56. BigFan September 26, 2014 11:09 am

I thnk there was a scam that was going on every so often. One of my former co-workers got an email saying that her friend was in a foreign country and was robbed and needed some money to get home. You might think it’s legitimate since it’s coming from your friend’s supposed address. These scammers get into your address book and start sending out these emails to your contacts.

  57. nutmegger September 26, 2014 11:14 am

Kiev is the capital of Ukraine and is not in Russia.

  58. Boolakanaka September 26, 2014 11:17 am

Joas reminds me, in both build and style, of my old teammate Marco Johnson….

  59. gigi-hawaii September 26, 2014 11:19 am

    BigFan,
    Yup, scams everywhere!

I have been getting calls from people with an Indian accent who claim to be employed by Microsoft.

They tell you to type something on your computer so they can fix it.

Well, I always hang up (after swearing at them).

A friend, however, followed the scammer’s suggestion and immediately her computer got jammed.

The scammer told her he could fix the computer if she sent him $250.

She hung up and now has it at a shop which will charge her $50 to fix it.

  60. st. anthony trojan September 26, 2014 11:20 am

    Don’t rush ewaliko…he is ‘learning the system’…seems to be the word…on him…
funny no one else seems to be learning the system…just him…hmmmmm

said it before… say it again… IW has a very poor completion rate…
surely a good athlete… but maybe wrong position…
unless he ‘loosens up’ n gets more comfortable back there…
if we can’t score 45 or so against rice.. with two weeks prep time…
then coach should maybe look 4 alternatives…

be interesting to see what clune n staff has in store 4 rice next…week…

BJ has been very quiet lately… no ‘hoof n mouth’ disease out of his office…???
maybe sumone told him to ‘zip it’ ???

  61. pollypicador September 26, 2014 11:30 am

    http://www.thescore.com/ncaaf/news/583686

Regarding Colorado’s mascot-it’s the cash cow for Colorado. Having such a great mascot can tap into so much airtime (like it did during the UH-Colorado game), publicity, marketing, school spirit, pride, and name recognition for the school and community. That mascot is the mother lode for the school. I could only imagine a potential buyer purchasing a Colorado sporting apparel because of the cute little buffalo on it. Or a potential donor to the school touched by “ralphie.”

    Colorado seizes the opportunity. Hawaii???

Meanwhile Hawaii has gone how many years (2) with out a mascot? What is UH waiting for?

In the above video link you will see that the Colorado mascot did get loose from it’s handlers before the Hawaii game.

  62. BigWave96744 September 26, 2014 11:36 am

    61.

Wow I must have been oblivious because I was there and recording the Ralphie run on my phone and didn’t even notice that happened. When you see these live animal type mascots like Ralphie and Beevo, it makes you wonder what type of conditions they live in outside of the stadium.

  64. A-House September 26, 2014 12:28 pm

hope UH coaches can tape the game for education purposes

  65. A-House September 26, 2014 12:35 pm

    polly #42:

we also noticed how well Luke Shawley placed as a DE – may be a little “light”, but explosive getting into the backfield – with his speed, he was able to run all the way across and tackle the QB or RB

likewise, Kennedy was a constant torn to the Colorado OL

    are they both Frosh?

  66. islandman September 26, 2014 1:07 pm

#65 — Shawley is a junior and Kennedy is a soph.

  67. 3-Prong September 26, 2014 1:20 pm

All we are saaaaaaayinggggg, is give Preese a chance! hehe

  68. Derek September 26, 2014 1:24 pm

Any recruits? I noticed a lack of playmakers, i.e. receivers, RBs, QBs, DBs.

  69. Derek September 26, 2014 1:35 pm

Ding, Ding, Ding! Finally remembered: Adrian Klemm, UCLA Associate Head Coach, offensive line.

    Go Beaus !!

I’ve been waiting. Some one had to say it.

    Go Beaus !!

Hey Norm, don’t let me down
You have found him, now go and get him
Remember to let him into your heart
Then you can start to make it better

So let it out and let it in, hey Norm, begin
You’re waiting for someone to perform with
And don’t you know that it’s just you, hey Norm, you’ll do
The movement you need is on your shoulder

All we are saying is give Pereese a chance

  79. Inyoface September 26, 2014 5:09 pm

How’s Reilly looking. I want to see him in the game, I don’t care anymore. We need some excitement, productivity and more energy in our offense.

  80. SteveM September 26, 2014 6:49 pm

Planning to attend a UH football road game this year?

Please post here and/or email with whatever info you have for listing in the Tsai-ko attendee table for each game. There is a possibility of other gatherings than those listed and will try to put everyone in touch via a group email a week before the game for optional communication among yourselves. See:

    http://stevem.altervista.org/away14.html

Looks like the usual suspects are gathering in San Diego and San Jose this year. 🙂

  81. al September 26, 2014 8:18 pm

80…yup taking a road game, but, krrping it hush hush. Want to preserve my private life.

Re-The person that should get a drum roll; prompts-UH foundation

In the last 2 years the UH foundation has raised their contributions from 44 to 66 to 98. That’s in millions. That’s impressive. In the past two years when UH sporting teams have hit dire straights and the school’s administration hit rock bottom with the retirement (or firing) of the two at the top… donations kept flowing in at record amounts. This begs the question how can this be. The better question is who’s the person behind the scene that’s making it all happen.

  85. 3-Prong September 26, 2014 9:31 pm

Noce to see Dashback on the newscast again on KHON.

    Good morning, folks!

Loved the Pereese vid! Tried to read through every post until I got to this gem from J/J…LMAO with tears!

@35 …”Kekoa is not in Kiev, he is in Nigeria collecting from one of his long lost relatives who tragically died in a car accident but the Nigerian government wants to take their money if a relative doesn’t claim it so Kekoa went there….Hackers….LMFAO”

    okay, back to reading

Enjoying the Geo/Tenn game. Paying attention to the O formations and play calling. Both teams are succeeding in making the D defend the whole field.
Those who plan to catch a game or two this weekend, college or pro, wwatch the alignments and play calls. Two SEC teams giving each other multiple looks on O. The position I watch the most is TE. Interesting to see how much effect the positioning of the TE has on the look of the formation.
