Game Day: Northern Iowa

In the old days, they used to call these “trap-door games.” It is a reference to doors that were on the floor of stages and … oh, never mind. We used a lot of ridiculous analogies in the past.

Point is: UNI,despite being an FCS school that offers 22 fewer scholarships than FBS counterparts, is a very good team.

The line is big, running back David Johnson is big time, and quarterback Sawyer Kollmorgen came from a big-time program (Jenks High in Oklahoma).

It will be an interesting matchup.

By the way, is it just me, but every time I type “UNI” i hear Stevie Wonder’s song “You and I”? You’re right. It’s just me.

Hahhaah, great, Mr. Tsai. Stevie Wonderblunder reference. Ah. The omens for this game. First Governor Danny DeVito, now this.

A Grease thinks of a unicylcle.

  3. SC September 13, 2014 8:33 am

I agree with you Mr. Tsai. Northern Iowa is a good team and I previously predicted that UH would lose 28-24. I see some problems with pass protection at the edge for UH. Also, Joey Iosefa is out and that takes away the inside running game. Further, UH will have a hard time defending Northern Iowa since they run and pass well. I also think that Northern Iowa has very good coaching.

  4. Chicken Grease September 13, 2014 8:36 am

East Carolina on their way to upsetting Virginia Technical Institute! 21-7, 3rd quarter.

Wyoming ahead of Oregon right now, 7-0.

A Grease feels like he’s the only one in the bar right now. Bartender more busy wiping glasses.

    Guud Morning Tsaikos…bootiful day.
Game day!…no mistakes, focus, defense seek and destroy!

    Ah. SC is here.

  7. Chicken Grease September 13, 2014 8:41 am

    NorthShoreFan is here.

East Carolina has a GREAT skull and bones (no, Not Hahvahd, heh) logo on their helmet.

  8. Chicken Grease September 13, 2014 8:47 am

Correction: Virginia Polytechnical Institute. Looks like they shouldn’t have reverted from their school colors (they’re wearing all white today, with a red-white-blue’d VT logo on their helmet.

Good morning fellow Warrior fans! Game day!!! GO WARRIORS!

Lakalaka has to be effective today running and blocking. Let’s do this.

Good morning Chicken Grease. Game day.

  13. kev-1 September 13, 2014 9:12 am

Chicken Grease (in response to your menu post yesterday) . . .

Once the responsibilities with the kiddies are done this afternoon, the game day menu will commence.

Something to drink with a little bit of sin in it (just a little)
Some skins and some dip (lots of bacon here)
    More sin
BBQ assortment. Depends how much can fit. No like stuff too much. I don’t want to vomit when I am celebrating tonight’s victory with hoots and hollers.

  14. kev-1 September 13, 2014 9:12 am

    Tomorrow? Cholesterol medicine.

  15. Chicken Grease September 13, 2014 9:26 am

Oh, my gosh. Yes. Much grease (pun unintended), very, very, yokatta ne and yappari ne*

Re: cholesterol medicine. Check a certain TIme magazine article. kev-1; butter is GOOD for all of us (and, apparently, always HAS been) 🙂 .

Thank you for remembering and answering this, kev-1.

Shellfish and olive oil’d-up ribeyes here on the grill is the name of the game here. Notable “someone’s bringing” is ice cream cake (hence, a Grease’s ice cream question from yesterday) . . . but, doing the TV thing for this game, so, the ice cream can be ‘frigerated.

  21. Stephen Tsai September 13, 2014 9:39 am

It’s supposed to be muggy again today.
I think it’s time to reset the seasons.
Instead of spring, summer, autumn winter, let’s make it Rainy, Muggy, Windy, Windy-Rain.

  22. Stephen Tsai September 13, 2014 9:40 am

I think I went to school with somebody named Windy.
    Or was that a song?
    Or was her name Rendy?
    That’s it. Rendy Kam.

Heh, Mr. Tsai. Especially when thei mascot is a bird! A Turkey! Gobble gobble. Poly want a cracker! Poly want a cracker!

Man, as much as a Grease hate that rainbow, at least we don’t have a “gobble gobble” pumping through the stadium sound system, like how VT has. Eek.

National coverage and not MWC play. Hawai’i should make every effort to take advantage of this media coverage national. Although not a big conference as Big 12 or Big 10 conferences and Iowa University is, this match up is still there. Count 1 win for Hawai’i, if they work harder and run faster? 34-24 in favor of Hawai’i tonight.

Illinois lawmakers want a third school in the Big 10. Since there are already 14 schools in the Big 10, that may not be a problem. If only it were this easy to get UH membership in the PAC12 … http://www.cbssports.com/collegefootball/eye-on-college-football/24498053/illinois-lawmakers-want-third-in-state-big-ten-school

Well, guess you have to take off your shirt when doing these wind styles, so do so.

A Grease is working the grill today and, well, despite the propensity of cool winds no matter what the weatherman says, a Grease might have to take his shirt off today; an act which he normally does NOT do. There will be a # of womens at this PPV party, so, they will get a treat if a Grease does that.

A Grease will indicate when/if he does something like this in a post here — will you, men of the board, also take off your shirt (if you don’t already have it off), in your respective setting, when/if this happens?

    Great Game-Day morning, everyone!

SteveM… that was the first song I learned to play on a clarinet that was given to me by an uncle! Brings back ODD memories! I loved learning how to play an instrument, but didn’t want to perform in front of a ton of relatives… all smiling and full of Christmas reverie… hoping I wouldn’t disappoint and leave a bad taste. They were, after all, loving relatives… full of praise and encouragement when I got done. Whew! What a mix of emotions on that Christmas Eve night, in Makaha, oh so long ago! I still kept playing sports, but found yet one more thing to learn… and excel at… if I could.

  32. Wes'side Warrior September 13, 2014 11:15 am

All right, Warriors! This is it! Game Day! Give it your best from start to finish!

Going through my my father-in-laws office and found a bunch of vintage UH helmet stickers (circa 82-98, see my new gravatar). Also found a large supply of uh embroidered patches of the same era. I’ll contact ST, to help give some away to interested Tsaikos.

    Let’s Go Bows!

  34. RainbowCliff September 13, 2014 11:33 am

My heart felt condolences to my GREAT warrior friend Gary Allen who’s mother Vivian Allen passed away. Prayers to his wife Hilda and his son Jayden as they cope with this heart felt family lost. Had the HONOR going to school with Gary Allen and many times during that GREAT era shared friendship on and off the playing field. Not only the GREATEST running back in UH history but a WONDERFUL and funny person. Mother Allen cared for Gary as well as his siblings. Worked hours and all types of jobs to keep food on the table and a roof over their heads. LOVED by all who knew and met her. Tasiko Nation prayers for a true Hawaii legend as he is grieving and taking it hard. My Rainbro Brother #26 For Life !

Well no matter how hot or humid it gets, we should feel fortunate because there are other places that is hotter and extremely humid. We went to Cancun, Mexico and it was suffocating heat. I never complain about our weather. GO RAINBOW WARRIORS!!!

  41. Abunai September 13, 2014 12:09 pm

In today’s game I think the OL for UH has to establish themselves in the trenches. That’s the main goal!! I think Lakalaka and other RBs should be good if OL does the job in the trenches.

Same thing on the defense. DL has to sound in the trenches but not just that because that QB can pass… So I believe they have to get pressure on the QB also…. Hope the DBs can hold…..

  42. kawika49 September 13, 2014 12:20 pm

    Please; no, stupid penalties.

June Jones’ resignation just mentioned in a pre-halftime summary (that included Penn St’s sanctions lifting) just mentioned by Lundquist and that other announcing hack on CBS’s coverage of the Georgia (ironically enough) vs. S. Carolina game going on now.

Both announcers basically praising Jones’ career. IF a Grease is not mistaken, Verne specified the SMU coaching position is not desirable? Someone correct a Grease on this as needed.

24-13, by the way, S. Carolina leading.

  45. mo808 September 13, 2014 12:55 pm

Gary Danielson is that “other annnouncing hack.” Verne overuses “impressive young man” a bit much.

Heh, on field interview w/Georgia coach prior to beginning of the 2nd half of Georgia vs. S. Carolina included a handwritten cloth sign in the background, “What happened at WTC VII“.

Offense looks pitiful again in the 1st half. QB gets sacked on a 4th down attempt!! Then NI scores a FG after that! Sucks. Doesnt look good for the rest of the season. Perhaps move to 2nd tier collegiate schedule. Could be a powerhouse.

  99. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 13, 2014 9:44 pm

We were lucky to win that game.

  100. Z September 13, 2014 9:51 pm

Thank you Scott Harding. Amazing punts, returns and receptions. That punt that caused a fumble saved our arse. Can’t figure why coach would go for the 1st down near the end of the second half. Scott would have pinned them deep. We gave them the ball at midfield and with that they were able to get within fieldgoal range.

  101. Da Punchbowl Kid September 13, 2014 9:55 pm

Congrats to the Warriors for their first win!

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  102. MattyBoy September 13, 2014 10:12 pm

Is anyone satisfied with this one? This feels worse than the Von Appen era. I really seriously hope Chow is not here at the end of this football season. He needs to go.

  103. MattyBoy September 13, 2014 10:13 pm

The fans were booing in the stadium. That says enough right there. RESIGN CHOW RESIGN!

  104. markazulu September 13, 2014 10:19 pm

Good game overall but GREAT Defensive effort. Woolsey played ok a lot of passes were dropped. Great to see Lakalaka step up though. Also very glad to see Mr. Higgins get a look hopefully that lights a fire under Woolsey.

  105. MattyBoy September 13, 2014 10:21 pm

Hawaii seriously looks like a D2 team! Gosh we barely beat a D2 team. Hawaii Definitely needs a new head coach. To think we fired Mcmackin, who had more wins in the year he got fired than out of all the years Chow has been a head coach for Hawaii by the way, and then hired Chow and his crappy ways? Unfreakenbelievable!

  106. UHfan808 September 13, 2014 10:32 pm

Congratulations to the Warriors on tonite’s win! Cheehuuuuuuu!!!

Lotsa really really super awesome things happened!

Would like to see more clicking, more accuracy, more completions, and very many more first downs for coming games for even more excitement! Yeah!

Thank you for the first win and for the fun, Warriors!

  107. Da Punchbowl Kid September 13, 2014 10:33 pm

  108. pollypicador September 13, 2014 10:44 pm

    A win is a win.

    I’m happy for the team.

    It beats losing. No?

Although you would never know by gauging people’s reaction.

    Be happy.

  109. Chicken Grease September 13, 2014 10:47 pm

Hear, hear all post-win positive comments. 😀

  110. markazulu September 13, 2014 10:48 pm

I find it funny how during the fan phones people brought up June Jones. They discussed how horrible our offense has been looking those people probably missed out on SMU the past 2 games. 🙁

  111. Chicken Grease September 13, 2014 10:56 pm

Yes, uh, also listened to fan phones. Sheesh, you’da thunk people’d be happy with this win. Oh, well. On to ANOTHER PAC-12 TEAM!

  112. markazulu September 13, 2014 11:07 pm

@Chicken Grease Yeah I mean we beat a pretty decent team that NEARLY upset Iowa on the road and their a legit top 10 FCS program. I understand the difference between FCS and FBS but people are forgetting Northern Iowa have been giving FBS program fits the past couple years. What was also funny was while listening to fan phones people are pulling facts out their okole saying we would be 3-0 if we had June Jones as a head coach. lol

Heh, yeah makazulu. Agreed on all counts. And the June Jones remarks made me laugh.

We barely beat a D2 team but we also barely lost to 2 pac-12 teams so it means nothing. We should also give all the whiners a chance to call plays so we can fire them too. hmm, fan involvement that might be interesting except we probably have more losses.

Congrats to Coach Chow and the team for their win. And to the Mountain Waste for streaming the game. Glad we are getting some value from them.

Fan participation; well whether it was for the boo’s or the cheers, at least it was in unison!?
I’d like to see Keelan Ewaliko used in more offensive plays maybe in whatcha call it?, wild cat plays? Boom Lakalaka, is doing his job; and I was thinking to my self on why Joey kept getting leg/feet injuries?, and maybe because he’s a big load and defenders aim low to take him down?
Still waiting for a, ” go to wr” for td’s, and to take pressure off of rb’s.
Defense, is looking good up front…backfield still letting wr’s get td’s way too often?

Our conditioning and special teams program, will pay additional dividends over time. Kudos to them and our improving defense.

Awesome performance by the defense. Think Yap’s TD won that game considering how lethargic the offense was last night.

Next up is Colorado and a chance for Chow to win his first road game.
